Adidas becomes latest brand to launch a smartwatch

Adidas miCoach Smart Run smartwatch

News: Adidas has become the latest brand to launch a smartwatch with the release of a device for runners that monitors performance and gives coaching tips (as well as telling the time).

The miCoach Smart Run is Adidas‘ colour touch-screen running watch, which integrates both performance tracking and personal training into one device.

“By combining the latest innovations, design and ease-of-use navigation, we consciously broke the template that defines other running watches,” said director of miCoach at Adidas Simon Drabble.

While training, users can track runs with GPS mapping, monitor heart rate, play music and get real-time coaching.

A built-in accelerometer counts steps for tracking stride rate. GPS tracks speed and distance, mapping the route travelled on the journey.

An integrated Bluetooth MP3 player can transmit music to wireless earpieces to eliminate headphone cables, which can become tangled while running.

The watch also features a personal training application that uses colours and vibrations to tell the user to speed up, slow down or pause. Coaching can be delivered by a voice via a Bluetooth headset, plus animations demonstrating exercises and workout routines can be played on screen.

“The visual and audible guidance for interval training is a leap forward from any other watch available,” said Terrence Mahon, lead endurance coach for the UK Athletics Federation.

The Smart Run watch will be available on the Adidas website from 1 November.

Similar activity-tracking devices have been created by Nike and Jawbone, although neither feature screens. Dezeen editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs discussed how wearable technology will “transform our understanding of ourselves” in his Opinion column, published March this year.

Companies from technology giants to car brands have all released wearable technologies over the past year. Adidas’ smartwatch joins a model by auto brand Nissan that communicates with a vehicle, Samsung’s Galaxy Gear that connects with the brand’s other devices and the Pebble watch, which raised the most money ever on crowd-funding platform Kickstarter.

Apple are also rumoured to be working on a smartwatch, while two companies launched rival Android-powered designs at the Baselworld watch fair in Switzerland in April.

Dezeen Watch Store: the popular touch-screen Mutewatch is now available for just £149 (was £199) for a limited time only.

Mutewatch was conceived when company founder Mai-Li Hammargren was living with a boyfriend who worked night shifts. Just as she was getting to sleep in the morning, her alarm would go off and wake him up. The solution? A personal, silent alarm clock that’s worn around the wrist.

The minimal-meets-retro aesthetic is inspired by the Rubik’s Cube and classic Swedish design and includes an integrated touch-screen that allows the wearer to swipe across the display and activate the timer and alarm functions. The silent alarm can be set to short or long vibrate.

The time is set by tapping directly on the digits, and alarms can be erased by ‘pinching’ the screen. The touch-screen can also be activated by movement – a simple flick of the wrist will immediately reveal the time.

There is an inbuilt USB port hidden within the strap, and the watch is fully charged within two hours. The device warns the wearer when the battery level is low and will automatically enter hibernation mode.

Timepiece Trio

Designer Mercea Andronescu describes her Revolve watch concept as just a “little project” but we think this timepiece is hugely awesome. The design is divided into 3 separate bracelets- 1 each for the hours, minutes and seconds. They clasp together with magnets, but can be worn individually or apart on each wrist, depending on the user’s preference. See how it works in the vid after the jump!

Stone, designed for Italian brand Nava, comes with three interchangeable leather straps, allowing the wearer to easily customise the look of the watch.

The distinctive, irregular shape of the dial is inspired by the smooth contours of weather-worn stones and pebbles and is complemented by a minimal face that is designed to be read at a glance.

The asymmetric dial and off-centre hands reference Guidone’s playful approach to time telling, a concept the designer first explored in the Ora Unica watch, which won the Aam O’Eva Creations international design prize in 2008.

Stone is available with a black or white face, and three straps: black, ash grey and taupe. Other features include a stainless steel case topped with a scratch-resistant mineral lens and Miyota 2025 movement. The dial and all three straps come in a presentation box. Buy Stone by Denis Guidone for £150.

A Touch of Class for iPhone

Bissol’s latest mobile timepiece is an elegant addition to the iPhone 5(s) that merges a classic timepiece to the modern smartphone. The 2000 Calibre here features an automatic mechanical Swiss movement suspended by a unique single bridge. Its precision one-piece construction allows the user to see the inner workings of the clock in an interesting contrast to the minimal, enclosed look of the iPhone.

Ring of Time

The Ring Clock concept was designed without inhibition as a product that might be able to exist in 10 years or so… but thanks to its futuristic appeal & simple functionality, it might become a reality sooner than you think! 144 ultra-thin mono-color LEDs are contrasted against surgical stainless steel. When you are looking for the time, just spin the ring to activate the blue & orange LEDs. To recharge, simply place it on the wireless clock-dock charger to restore full power that lasts a week!
