Bite-size video interviews on the future of design from creative minds around the globe
Little & Company’s Thirty Conversations on Design begins today with its second-annual web video series. We featured the project’s launch last year, which probes creative minds around the world with two questions: “What single example of design inspires you most?” and “What problem should design solve next?”
Make sure to check out the site to see answers from an outstanding group of people, spanning Tony Hawk to Daniel Pink to one of Cool Hunting’s very own.
Transforming their dormitory building into a light show extravaganza, the students at Poland’s Wroclaw University of Technology demonstrated their tech-savvy skills with this large-scale installation of pixel-like flashes set to an equally animated soundtrack.
Called “Projekt P.I.W.O.,” (the acronym means “beer” in Polish), it’s simultaneously humorous and beautiful—particularly the Michael Jackson tribute about seven minutes in.
Part of an impressive series that shows off the school’s technological virtuosity, this video depicts a spectrum of influences and creates a dynamic landscape within the solid world of dorm buildings. Recently highlighted on Good Magazine, the spectacle brings to mind other light-infused architectural feats such as Aukland’s “Night Lights” demonstration.
Defining the pigments of the imagination for almost 50 years, Pantone sets industry standards in color. Its matching systems and guides are essential in graphic arts, industrial design, fashion, cosmetics—when finding, referencing or producing the precise hue, tint or shade is critical.
Keeping to its tradition of innovative solutions, the Carlstadt, NJ-based company today launches The Plus Series. A complementary video, “360˚ Color: A Peek Inside Pantone on the Release of The Plus Series,” (made by CH filmmakers Gregory Mitnick and Ami Kealoha) offers a behind-the-scenes look into the system’s development and products with the folks at Pantone and notable designers, including Swissmiss founder Tina Roth Eisenberg, RISD President John Maeda, and Doug Jaeger, President of the Art Director’s Club. The short, along with the new look and feel of Pantone, comes from the creative minds of the multidisciplinary Base, who worked with Pantone to come up with a fresh identity, framing the new plus series within “a context that references the classic Pantone Chip.”
After continually adding sections to its book, Pantone reorganized the chromatic families to fluidly relate to each other. It also introduces 224 brand-new colors and three on-trend categories: pastels, neons and metallics. For those who prefer to go paperless, Pantone digitized its fan decks with its Color Manager software.
In an effort to bridge gaps between two neighborhoods of Boston, digital media artist John Ewing created the public art project Virtual Street Corners. The project, set to unveil June 2010, uses live video feeds between Boston locales Brookline and Roxbury to encourage neighborly affection between the predominantly African-American and Jewish neighborhoods.
Social action site Dowser highlights Ewing’s effort, which his experience creating public murals around town inspired. In conversations with the public he found people kept to their own neighborhoods, rarely venturing beyond familiar stomping grounds. Virtual Street Corners aims to mediate that disconnect by using video and microphones to encourage virtual dialogue.
