Los Tres Juanes

Master Spanish craftsman showcase their geometrically intricate woodworking styles

Using a combination of modern machinery and historical woodworking techniques, Los Tres Juanes create beautifully-intricate roof frameworks in styles unique to the south of Spain. These exceptionally skilled craftsman create Alfarjes (polygon-shaped painted ceilings) and Mudejar-style coffered ceilings made entirely of finely-intertwined wood. Check out their short video above, detailing their workshop and the process of creating their geometric works of art.

A Walk In Our Shoes

Win a head-to-toe Leifsdottir look styled by yours truly

Scandinavian label
Leifsdottir
channels today’s “modern woman” with a mix of avant-garde cuts, gorgeously art-inspired patterns, a bold use of color and an approach to femininity that’s equal parts confident and seductive. So, when asked to participate in a video project documenting a day in the life of their shoes, I was happy to pick up the camera.

leifsdottir_spring2011.jpg

Apparently my fellow cinematographers (among them Susanna Lau of
Style Bubble
and Tales of Endearment), had a similar idea, and (while my pedicure scenes must be on the cutting-room floor) the resulting video is a montage of feet making their way through their day, shot from the point of view of the wearer. Shoes fall in love, make a dinner table appearance and, in my case, play with some of NYC’s more charming sidewalks.

In addition to the video, Leifsdottir also asked me to style an outfit to go with the shoes. I opted to keep it simple with the sassy Tuxedo Jumpsuit, which nicely offsets the girly bows of the Ulrika sandals with its playful take on a masculine classic. You can win the shoes (though the style may vary) and one-piece by submitting your email in the below form. (See contest rules here.)

Symbol-isms

Dig this well-done video short by Andrew McCarthy that features one of our favorite topics: Symbolism. Via:

The Century of IBM

We may have slept on this one, but IBM’s centennial film which outlines their evolution and accomplishments is most definitely worth a view. Pay close attention to their thinking on design 6 minutes in. Enjoy.

Pulse of the City

A day in the life of creating our site makes GPS art to celebrate the new Range Rover Evoque

Advertorial content:

Anticipating tonight’s NYC launch of the Range Rover Evoque it seems like the right time to share a video I’ve been working on as part of my involvement with the Pulse of the City campaign. While the larger program is an evolving, interactive guide to 10 cities, one component is the Pulse iPhone app that tracks your movement and converts it to a piece of digital art. This past January I used the app to track a day in New York visiting a bunch of different venues where I often find inspiration for the site.

The Mountain
