Get Contemporary, Artsy Styled Versions Of Classic Literature Greats!

imageAs long as it takes to read a novel, it would only make sense for it to be pretty to look at. For the most part, classic reads tend to fall under the same cover category: plain, English-101 style. With the help of literature and art enthusiasts, new cover designs have made shelving favorites like Wuthering Heights and The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer more of a decorative statement rather than a storage method. As these types of renovations are commonly found near the you-need-one-more-thing bins near the checkout at novelty hipster stores like Urban Outfitters, contemporary renditions of classics have paved themselves a new market for old works. And although you should never judge a book by its cover, these titles were acclaimed well before their wardrobe change, so you can actually feature some books atop coffee tables and nightstands that are worth their beauty.

Shake Up Your Shoulders With Cutouts, Embellishments, Ruffles, And More!

imageOnce upon a time, I used to raid my mother’s closet for her best ’80s garb and shuffle around in front of the mirror, giggling relentlessly at how ridiculous I looked with glossy patent pumps devouring my feet and a good 6 inches of extra material protruding from my shoulders. I have to say I honestly never thought I’d see the day when my mother’s Goodwill-bound shoulder-padded sweaters would once again become runway gold. But believe it or not, the latest trend in details is the highlighted shoulder, popping up all over the style spectrum with everything from beading and cutouts to serious structure and modern padding. This may sound like another unwisely resurrected trend of the past (*cough* scrunchies *cough*), but emphasized shoulders can look chic and updated, as long as you keep the rest of your outfit slim-fitting and understated. Too much bulk and you may just end up looking like a linebacker… or like you’re swimming in your mother’s wardrobe rejects once again. Take a look at the slideshow for a dozen ways to shimmy in style this season!

Excite Your Eyes with Vertical Stripes!

Remember when they told us that horizontal stripes made you look fat? By all means, stay AWAY from horizontal stripes! That golden fashion rule was ingrained into our style-psyche for years and years until large black and white horizontal stripes became the next big trend and everyone couldn’t wait to walk around looking like pseudo-Parisians everyday, causing cravings for berets and lattes in all innocent on-lookers. The new stripe trend to hit is that of the vertical black and white stripe! Scientists are now saying that vertical stripes can be a frenemy in the “looking fat” department, but runway giants like Gucci, Herve Leger by Max Azria, and Ann Demeulemeester have all embraced the trend. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather take fashion advice from the fashion experts! Black and white is a classic contrast combination and is only punched up more by the visually exciting look of vertical stripes. The pattern is versatile and looks great in a lightweight wool for a structured blazer, or a gauzy chiffon for a flirty yet sophisticated day-to-night dress. Vertical stripes are also great for elongating the figure and can make legs look like they go on forever! The trick is to not wear super thin vertical stripes close together. This will cause a visual sensory overload and you run the risk of looking like a wobbly optical illusion. Stripes in varying widths is the most flattering such as wide black stripes and thin white ones for example, or look for stripes that have a slight diagonal tilt to it. If you like what you see but want to take it for a test-drive first, opt for accessories like bags, scarves or hats that feature the vertical stripe pattern. Really be a trendsetter and try vertical stripes with this spring’s pop citrus colors!

Lumberjack-Inspired Looks That Don’t Recall Wood Chopping… Or Pancakes

When you think of the word “lumberjack,” you picture burly men heaving logs and sawing trees in half whilst in the company of a big, blue ox. In my case, I just start singing that one line in Notorious B.I.G.’s legendary song “Juicy” in my head over and over again (you know how it goes: way back/when I had the red and black lumberjack/with the hat to match). Even though those images are ingrained in our heads, the fashion community has embraced this buffalo check pattern in sartorial ways that are hip and cool. We no longer have plain log rolling red and black flannels. Instead, we have buffalo checked messenger bags, hoodies that use black and white instead of red and black and lumberjack shirts that don’t say “I’m going to eat a big pile of pancakes before I chop some wood.” Here are some lumberjack-chic items that may not make you as strong as the Brawny man, but will make you look like a posh Paul Bunyan.

Agyness Deyn And MGMT Spotted Wearing Jewish Rosaries from Carlen Altman’s (JEW)elery Collection

You don’t need to be a Torah-toter to love Jewish rosaries. These religion-inspired beads have been popping up on cool kids everywhere (including their fearless leaders Agyness Deyn and the boys from MGMT). The (JEW)elery collection was started by Carlen Altman in her Brooklyn, NY, studio when she was inspired by vintage Catholic rosaries. As a nice little Jewish girl in BK, she couldn’t bring herself to wear a cross; hence the birth of Jewish rosaries. Each necklace is adorned with shapes like Stars of David, Hamsa hands and menorah charms. You can choose from an array of styles with names like “Chai Maintenance” for the discerning Jewess or Shiksa, or just a simple one from the “Classic” collection with a Star of David. These unusual necklaces come in both gold and silver with your choice of colored beads (personally I think the Jet shade has a great 80’s Madonna feel to it). The most recent collection comes in red, black, and even in-glow-in-the-dark (coolest thing ever!!). These are so kitschy and cool, even goyem like me can sport them! Check out the slideshow to see some of the styles and then head over to the Jewish Rosaries site to claim one (or a few) of your own!
