Platons Powerful Portfolio Wins National Magazine Award for The New Yorker

platonx4.jpg
Lithuanian president Dalia Grybauskaité, President Barack Obama, Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, and South African president Jacob Zuma were among the 110 world leaders Platon photographed over five days at the United Nations.

(platon).jpgIt was déjà vu all over again at last night’s National Magazine Awards, at least in the design and photo categories. The evening featured impressive threepeats, as Wired and National Geographic collected their third consecutive wins for design and photojournalism, respectively. And Platon pulled off back-to-back victories for The New Yorker in the photo portfolio category. The idea for his “Portraits of Power,” an astounding body of work spread lusciously over The New Yorker‘s December 7 issue, was sparked when the photographer happened to catch Henry Kissinger being interviewed on Charlie Rose early last year.

The veteran statesman was explaining how the contemporary political landscape makes it impossible for a country to solve even internal problems in isolation. Addressing international issues, he said, requires special relationships between world leaders. That gave Platon, a staff photographer at The New Yorker, an idea. “I wanted to show a new collective personality, as if all these leaders were now on one team, highlighting the difficult challenges and strained tensions, as well as the new optimism and goodwill, generated by Obama’s election,” Platon told us in an interview in advance of last night’s awards. He proposed an ambitious portfolio of world leaders to editor-in-chief David Remnick, and they decided on the United Nations as the ideal setting. “It is the place that brings together a family of nations and functions as the platform for world understanding,” said Platon. “It provided the perfect cohesive setting for my portraits for this project.”

Recession Chic: Sigma Makeup Brushes

imageAsk a beauty neophyte or serious makeup maven to name a high end makeup company and MAC Cosmetics would definitely be on the list. The staple brand for any makeup artist is also super accessible and fairly budget friendly for people like us. So when I went to the local counter to take a peek at their makeup brushes to round out my collection, I wasn’t prepared for the sticker shock! Luckily, I found a comparable new company called Sigma Makeup. Sigma carries a line of handmade professional quality brushes and a fraction of what MAC charges. If you check out the Professional Brushes Complete Kit, the 12 brushes included are essentials in any makeup bag and only cost $69. If you buy the same brushes from MAC, it would cost a whopping $333 (aka a new pair of shoes!). As a devout follower of being recession chic, $69 is still a lot of money, but believe me, quality brushes can totally change the way you apply your makeup. I can’t imagine doing my makeup without using their soft powder brush or eyeshadow blending brush. They also carry some brushes individually including a super cute line of Hollywood themed kabuki brushes as well a small collection of makeup. All I can say is, watch out MAC!

First Flush Film

ImpossibleProjFlush-1.jpg ImpossibleProjFlush-2.jpg

Having achieved their goal of bringing instant analog film back into production, The Impossible Project‘s latest effort continues to revive and remaster the concept. Their limited-edition “First Flush” series introduces a silver-based monochrome film, currently available in two formats, 600 and SX-70. Though results may vary with each individual package depending on light, temperature, as well as possible early-batch defects, the overall effect lends a ghostly quality to snapshots.

The new format is an experimental exploration, upholding their mission of not simply reproducing Polaroid products. Rather, they use the defunct company’s equipment to develop advanced film that remains loyal to Polaroid’s timeless aesthetic. As the ongoing reinvention builds momentum, expect to see color film in the next few months.

Exclusively available for in-store purchase at the Photographer’s Gallery Bookshop in London, the film also sells for $21 via The Impossible Project’s online shop.

FIT to Webcast Graduates Fashion Show

FIT.gifGraduating seniors at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) are following in the footsteps of Michael Kors, Isaac Mizrahi, Alexander Wang, and other top designers that chose to webcast their fall 2010 runway shows, allowing anyone with an Internet connection (and a slightly higher-res imagination) to glimpse their new collections at the same time as top editors and buyers. Clear your Monday evening, when for the first time in the history of FIT, the annual graduating students runway show will be streamed live here at around 7:30. It’s your chance to get a first look at the future of fashion as students present sportswear, special occasion, knitwear, intimate apparel, menswear, and children’s wear (always a crowd pleaser) designed for fall 2010. And be sure to check out the front row, where you’ll see the likes of Carolina Herrera scouting talent. Another futuristic FIT touch? The school is simulcasting the show in 3D to overflow crowds in its Haft Auditorium, so cross your fingers for lots of ruffles!

Rooms

Rooms_Buzzelli2.jpg

Those needing interior decorating tips might find some offbeat inspiration after they see “Rooms”, an exhibit opening tomorrow, 24 April 2010, at Scion’s Installation L.A. Gallery.

ROOMS_CH-Bill-Daniel1.jpg

Curated by Roger Gastman, eight artists including Kime Buzzelli and Adam Wallacavage were assigned an area in the 4,500-square-foot gallery to create a room from scratch. “This show requires artists to not just hang art on the wall, but build out an entire room that corresponds with their work. All of the artists in ‘Rooms’ are able to deal with a more complex concept and are also inventive enough to create a unique experience,” Gastman said.

The results run the gamut. Wallacavage hung his sea-life chandeliers in his room against custom wallpaper, while Dueling VHS’ comedy skits will play on a TV in a make-believe basement. Bill Daniel’s room interprets a punk-rock teenager’s den, and Buzzelli dives into a girl’s set-up. The overall concept makes for a refreshing take on traditional art exhibits, allowing fans to see the breadth of these artists’ imaginations in a new way.

The show runs till 15 May 2010.

Blazers Are For Spring Too!

imageBlazers have become the new outfit-commodity. They’re the easiest way to rock the edgy boyfriend style. Throw one over a mini, short-shorts, skinny jeans or leggings, and your look’s complete — and not to mention chill free! But a chill is all you need to prevent in this blossoming weather. A blazer for spring shouldn’t carry winter’s bulk — it should be a lighter-weight fabric, could be slinkier cut (cropped or shorter-sleeved), maybe an open-up, and perhaps even lighter-colored to be spring season-appropriate. As commonplace as they are on store racks, wearing a blazer still makes you different enough to stand out. The best part: it’s a classy addition to a casual outfit, and the combination is perfect for hitting the streets with style! Check out the slideshow for a variety of springier designed blazers!
