Fresh off rolling out new green packaging for Puma and hiring David Adjaye to make him some underwear, our close personal friend Yves Behar and his fuseproject pals have continued on their hot streak with the announcement of their partnership with the Mexican government. Called “See Better to Learn Better” or Colleccion Escolar 2010, Behar has returned to designing for children (after One Laptop Per Child) with pairs of super sturdy eyeglasses, which will be made available for free to children 6-18 years old in Mexico. Here’s a description of the customizable options, to make the glasses more appealing to the kids (and make those with good vision hate their genes):
…we designed two part frames that are fully customizable with top and bottom colors that can be mixed and matched to fit all children’s personal choices. The innovative interchangeable nose pads let children with more petite noses wear the glasses comfortably. Through the use of the two part construction, 7 colors, 5 shapes and 3 sizes, these glasses can be swapped and adjusted in the field in order to update prescriptions.

Some of the exhibitors at Pick Me Up – the graphic art fair which opened last week and is currently running at Somerset House until May 3 – kindly took the time to tell us (and our lo-fi “film making equipment”) about their involvement in the show. Over the next day or two we’ll show you the films we made – first up is a look at Print Club London’s room in the exhibition which they are sharing with new illustration agency HigginsonHurst…
James Hurst of HigginsonHurst talked to us about the new illustration agency’s presence at Pick Me Up:
James also, very kindly, took the time to explain the part of the screenprinting process that visitors to the Print Club London / HigginsonHurst room at Pick Me Up don’t get to see: getting the screens print-ready:
Also, while we were hanging about in this particular room at Pick Me Up, we bumped into James Jarvis who had just finished screenprinting an edition of 50 new prints. So we stuck our camera in his face too (thank you James):

Thank you to Luke Whittaker and James Jarvis who allowed us to film them.
For the Milan Design Week, Italian studio Carnovsky created a series of wallpapers that react to different coloured lights
The designs were created for the Milan shop of Janelli & Volpi, a noted Italian wallpaper brand. Each features overlapping illustrations, different elements of which are revealed depending on whether a blue, green or red light is shone upon them.
This one deals with the human body

She’s not afraid of a whole lot of color, and she loves to sparkle and shine, day or night! To tie in with the 9th Sci-Fi London Film Festival, graphic design studio Transmission asked 22 image makers from around the world (including Universal Everything, Alex Trochut, Mario Hugo and Tom Gallant) to create a new piece of work depicting their vision of what life will be like in 2050…
Life in 2050, runs at the Proud Central Gallery in London until May 4 and features work by Alex Trochut, Dan McPharlin, Daniel K Sparkes, Emiliano Granado, Future Deluxe, Graham Carter, Hort, Ivan Jones, James Taylor, Jason Tozer, Kerry Roper, Lee Baker, Mario Hugo, MVM (Magnus Voll Mathiassen), Panda Yoghurt, Sam Chivers, Stephen Elford, Tom Gallant, Tom Muller, Transmission, Universal Everything, and Unlimited.
“The brief for each artist was the same: To create an original image depicting their vision of what life will be like in 2050,” explains Transmission’s Stuart Tolley. “I wanted each piece to be created in an A2 portrait format and framed exactly the same way in thick white wooden frames. The images all sit next to each other at the same height in the gallery space. This gives each image an equal amount of space, so the viewer isn’t distracted by scale and framing techniques. I really wanted the varying styles and ideas to be the focus.” Here are some photos of some of the work in situ:
Toku Chan and the Super Bomb by Lee Baker
The Death of Saint Cecillia by Ivan Jones
doubleplusungood by Tom Gallant
Dream on Dreamer by Alex Trochut: “This lenticular print changes colour as you move around it, creating a stunning and hypnotic psychedelic effect,” explains Tolley
LIFE IN 2050 runs until May 4 at Proud Central Gallery, 32 John Adam Street, London, WC2A 6BP
