Family Stuff

Giveaway: Shift Calculator for the iPad

My husband and I tend to be fairly early adopters when it comes to new Apple products. We’re certainly loyal Apple users! I’m thinking back to my first computer that I purchased while in college, the Power Macintosh 7100 circa 1994. I think we’d already own an iPad (for magazine “research and development purposes”) if hadn’t had to replace a studio computer a few weeks ago.

Shift sent out an email today offering a giveaway of their new calculator for the iPad. The large numbers and simply elegant design immediately caught my eye. If you have an iPad and would like this app, please leave a comment and on Monday I’ll draw three names and email you a promo code which will allow you to download a free copy of Digits Calculator for iPad from the iTunes App Store.

Artforum Names New Editor-in-Chief

cover_AF.jpgHas a whole seven years elapsed since Tim Griffin became editor-in-chief of Artforum? So it has, and he has decided to leave the post for new adventures (which we fervently hope he will write about, whether in prose or verse). In his new role as Artforum‘s editor-at-large, Griffin will organize symposia and book projects, and will produce a special issue of the magazine next fall. He is also completing a volume of his own critical writing on contemporary art. Meanwhile, senior editor Michelle Kuo is taking the helm as editor-in-chief, Artforum announced today. A doctoral candidate at Harvard who has written numerous articles for Artforum, Kuo has also contributed to many other publications and exhibition catalogues. From 2005 to 2007, she was the Wyeth Predoctoral Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art.

Label Love: Dare To Brighten Your Look With Sugarpill Cosmetics

imageWhen it comes to clothing, I love incorporating bright colors into my wardrobe. But with eye makeup, I usually play it safe with neutral shades like brown, grey and taupe. Just when I was trying to figure out how to get out of this drab makeup rut, I discovered Sugarpill Cosmetics. Founder Amy Doan launched her makeup line earlier this year with a variety of brightly colored pressed eyeshadows, loose pigments, and false eyelashes. It sounds weird, but I wish I had more eyelids so I can play with all the products all at once. Unexpectedly, one of my favorite pressed eyeshadows is Dollipop, an insanely bright matte pink that I usually pair with a light brown shadow for a look that’s almost work appropriate. (Tip: you can also use it as a blush!) MAC Carbon lovers like myself looking for an alternative should try Bulletproof because it’s one of the blackest black eyeshadows I’ve ever encountered. You also get over double the product compared to MAC at a lower cost too. As for the loose pigments, Lumi may look like a simple white glitter powder, but when applied there’s a surprisingly flattering turquoise sheen that catches the light beautifully. Prices range from $8 for a pair of dramatic false eyelashes to $34 for a quad eyeshadow palette so there’s something for everyone. It’s time to ditch boring neutrals, embrace bright colors in your makeup routine and using Sugarpill is the perfect way to start.

Gabarage

Garbarage_longtonchairs.jpg

Set in Vienna’s design-forward 4th district, Gabarage Upcycling Design repurposes materials from personal and corporate donations—old binders, street signs, film, tennis balls and more—into playful, purposeful modern design pieces. The upshot is a dramatic increase in product lifecycles, garbage bins may become furniture, a silencer may become a piece of jewelry, and a bowling pin can find a far more peaceful existence as a flower vase.

Garbarage_kegelvase_s2.jpg

But what Gabarage provides its community goes beyond ecologically sound design solutions into the realm of social responsibility. Every finished product in its showroom results from collaborations between professional artists and designers and a team of disadvantaged people from the surrounding community, all preparing to rejoin the regular labor market. Its staff of 20 includes unemployed individuals, welfare recipients and adolescents addicted to illegal substances who either completed drug therapy or are being cared for at outpatient clinics. The employees gain professional creative experience through an occupational training program developed specifically for the shop.

When asked about the company’s hopes for the future, Daniel Strobel, Gabarage’s head of marketing and corporate communications, replies, “Besides the aesthetically pleasing aspect, most of all I hope that our products and the idea behind them contribute to a rising level of awareness concerning both the ecological and the social responsibility we all bear. By (re)using waste materials and employing former addicts, we work towards a more sustainable economy and try to set an example for corporate social responsibility, which hopefully many will follow.”
