Label Love: Fabien Baron Eyewear For A Sophisticated Summer

imageSunglasses aren’t new to the summer accessories ‘must-have’ list, but the last few years have given them a more stylish designer edge. With all the different shapes, colors and sizes now being used for trendy sunglasses and eyewear, one can never have enough pairs in their repertoire. At least I can’t and if you’re anything like me, having just one pair of sunglasses is far from enough. Fabien Baron eyewear offers sunglasses for both men and women and come in an array of trendy or classic frame shapes, all of them flattering. A variation of large circular frames, square shapes and aviators are offered in sleek metallic finishes or sophisticated, but interesting shades (including personal fave: dark tortoise). Made with superior quality, and versatile but unique at the same time, Fabien Baron sunglasses are on the must-have list of summer staples and with so many lust worthy choices, it’ll be hard to just choose one. They’re a little pricey at about $350 per pair, but they’ll last a lifetime. Plus, with options for both men and women, you can even get matching ones for you and your sweetie. Richard Meier Model Museum

modelmuseum1.jpg

Almost as impressive as his magnificent buildings, Richard Meier‘s Model Museum in Long Island City, Queens is both an homage to his impressive portfolio, as well as a lesson in the architectural creative process.

modelmuseum4.jpg

Consuming much of the 3,600-square-foot space, the model of the L.A. Getty Center represents a project that took up a similarly significant portion of Meier’s career. The undertaking brought the New Jersey native west during its 13-year construction, where he lived on site, riding his bike down most mornings to check on the structure. When he found a spare moment, he collected wood scraps from the site, creating sculptures by binding together the pieces with string and casting them in stainless steel. Interspersed with the models, alongside colorful collages he also made, the museum gives a real sense of the architect as artist.

modelmuseum5.jpg

Many of the models themselves take years to complete (five for the Getty Center) thanks to the fanatically precise detailing. Each piece of wood is cut and shaped by hand, although model maker Michael Gruber, aka Mr. Tree, designed a now-patented pattern used to laser-cut the delicately intricate trees .

modelmuseum6.jpg

Like many of his buildings, the all-white space makes the perfect backdrop—in this case for displaying the massive models. With such large dimensions, they were all craned in through the ceiling, and many have accompanying blown-up versions detailing smaller sections of the original. Some simply represent the future site without any buildings, one of which hangs from the wall giving the impression of an abstract artwork.

Meier explains that “what we’re doing is open, transparent and expressive of our time.” At 76, with both a humbly positive outlook and expansive body of work, the renowned architect shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

The Richard Meier Model Museum is open to the public on Fridays by appointment only. To book, phone the museum (+1 212 967 6060). See more images in the gallery below, including a look at the only model built by Richard Meier himself.

Sukkah City: Call for registration!

pimg alt=”sukkah1.jpg” src=”http://www.core77.com/blog/images/sukkah1.jpg” width=”468″ height=”489″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pJoshua Foer has just launched a href=”http://www.sukkahcity.com”Sukkah City/a, a design competition challenging architects and designers to re-imagine the ancient form of the sukkah in a contemporary context. Twelve finalists will be selected and their work will be constructed in New York’s Union Square, occupying the park from September 19th through the 20th. From the site:/p

blockquoteOstensibly the sukkah’s religious function is to commemorate the temporary structures that the Israelites dwelled in during their exodus from Egypt, but it is also about universal ideas of transience and permanence as expressed in architecture. The sukkah is a means of ceremonially practicing homelessness, while at the same time remaining deeply rooted. It calls on us to acknowledge the changing of the seasons, to reconnect with an agricultural past, and to take a moment to dwell on–and dwell in–impermanence./blockquote

pThe competition is design-build, where the construction of each of the 12 structures will be the responsibility of each team (and funded by Sukkah City through a financial award). Nice. But you can start your own fun by visiting the competition website and exploring the intriguing rollover field of design constraints (screenshot below). Also very nice. Jury members are Michael Arad, Ron Arad, Rick Bell, Paul Goldberger, Steven Heller, Natalie Jeremijenko, Maira Kalman, Geoff Manaugh, Thom Mayne, Thomas de Monchaux, Ada Tolla, Adam Yarinsky, and Core77’s Allan Chochinov./p

Online Tour of Donald Judds Personal Library Launches

0507judbook.jpg

Maybe our favorite thing of the week was the launch by the Judd Foundation of an exhaustive online version of Donald Judd‘s personal library. Containing more than 13,000 books covering a gigantic assortment of topics, it’s a virtual tour of the former Marfa-based artist’s collection. We know that “virtual tour” sounds like Web .5, but it feels entirely apt. Or maybe we’re just suckers for books, great photos of library stacks, and Judd in general. Whatever the case, we couldn’t think of a better way to spend the rest of your Friday. And when you need a break, we recommend hitting up this Art Info interview the director of the Foundation, Barbara Hunt McLanahan, who talks about both the library itself and how this online component all came together.

Recession Chic: Embrace The Summery Eyelet Trend For Under $50

imageOne of my favorite summer trends this year is the proliferation of eyelet. Found on everything from bedding to dresses, eyelet always reminds me of grandmothers and days gone by. The vintage detail doesn’t always have to be old fashioned as many of our favorite stores and designers have made eyelet new again. I especially love eyelet for the hot summer months because the little holes provide instant ventilation! Like any trend, I never like to spend too much so I found plenty for under $50. Pair the bright yellow Sweet Sunday dress with a straw boater hat for a cheerful look. Or pair the Boho Eyelet Skirt from American Eagle with a simple tank and multiple chain necklaces for a boho meets rock ‘n roll style. Take a peek at my slideshow to see more eyelet you can’t get enough of!
