Slanted

The German magazine Slanted‘s spring issue is out and features blackletter type. It looks quite comprehensive in its scope. It is a very different aesthetic to anything I design or curate for UPPERCASE, but it is always good to explore/admire other styles!

In “Heavy Metal. Lovers.” we look into blackletter fonts and their modern applications. Slanted presents the innovative work of Invisible Creature (Seattle), historic type-treasures from the archives of Linotype (Bad Homburg) and Klingspor Museum (Offenbach), the photo documentation “True Norwegian Black Metal” from Peter Beste (New York) etc. …

Karl Lagerfeld Directs Another Short Film for Chanel

Speaking of film, Karl Lagerfeld, everyone’s famous teddy bear-making, SpongeBob-minting designer (who still isn’t retiring, by the way), has caught the cinema bug again and there’s only one solution: make a strange branded movie for Chanel. Following his film late last year, Paris-Shanghai: A Fantasy, which found a sleeping Coco dreaming of China, the photography hobbyist has gotten back to it with Remember Now, which is slightly less bizarre but features less heavy makeup than the last. However, the script is still meanders as much as before and the camera is just as shaky as always (could Lagerfeld be doing all the camera work himself?). Here’s part one:

Bag Of The Week: Rebecca Minkoff Lace Pouch

imageLace has the reputation of being suggestive and sexy, but let’s face it — it’s not always easily wearable. There are only so many ways to rock the lingerie-inspired trend before it starts pushing the boundaries of what looks like just plain ol’ underwear, and unless you’re Lady GaGa, lace-covered shades and lace leggings might be a little too “out there.” Leave it to the realm of handbags to mix leather and lace in a way that’s both classy and cute! The Rebecca Minkoff Lace Pouch is the perfect size for packing just your night-out necessities, and its cross-body design allows you to wear it comfortably whether you’re bar-hopping or window-shopping. It comes in blue and yellow as well, if those colors better suit your summer style, but I’m personally diggin’ the pink in contrast with the bag’s gunmetal hardware for that more girlie-edgy dichotomy. And at $98, it’s a pretty good deal if you’ve been hoping to add a Rebecca Minkoff bag to your collection!

What: the Rebecca Minkoff Lace BF Pouch
Price: $98
Where to Buy: Shopbop
Who: xgalexy was the first to add the Rebecca Minkoff Lace BF Pouch to the Hive.

Pixars Ralph Eggleston Designs Telluride Film Fest Poster

0513eggpost.jpg

While all the talk about film festivals are usually the films themselves, for this very brief moment in time, there’s been buzz about the festival poster instead. The Telluride Film Festival has just released a copy of their annual promotional print, which usually always get some minor attention as the event tries to nab interesting designers or artists each year to do the job — last year was William Wegman (.doc) and the year before that was Laurie Anderson (pdf). For the 2010 fest, they’ve landed Pixar‘s Ralph Eggleston, the art director and production designer who has been involved in the studio’s popular films since Toy Story (as well as directing their Oscar-winning short, For the Birds. Eggleston told the LA Times that he based the muted-color, retro look on It Happened One Night, and Entertainment Weekly reports that a second poster by the designer will be released closer to the festival’s kick off in September.

Weigh in: How do you store the tiniest toys in your child’s playroom

Reader Stephanie is in the process of making over her children’s playroom and wrote to me asking for some organizing help. She is specifically having problems finding ways to store those small, easily misplaced, choke-able pieces of games and toys. She has tried using zip-top bags with very little success and wants a more visually pleasing solution.

I sent her some suggestions, which I’ve listed below, but thought this would be a great question to pose to our readers. How do you recommend storing the tiniest toys in your child’s playroom?

My suggestions:

Now it’s your turn. Tell us your suggestions for Stephanie in the comments.

Bright Eyed And Bold With Neon!

imageNeon went from being a fun splash of color on our nails to slowly creeping its way into accessories, before finally taking over the closets of the fashionably daring. Now, the neon trend is pushing it a step further and showing up as shadows and liners, to have our peepers really feeling florescent. Trendsetting celebs like Rihanna and Lady Gaga have already taken this trend out for a few spins, making their eyes bright and super stylish. Or remember Beyonce’s yellow eyeshadow in the ‘Lady Gaga feat. Beyonce video, Telephone’? Although neon eye shadows and liners are definitely a daring move, you can go as light or as saturated as you want. Fair skin? Try a generous sweep of hot pink over your lids like Lady Gaga to make a real head-turning statement. Or if you have natural honey tones and want a more subtle look, try a bright yellow, like Beyonce, or a light dusting of orange. Blues and purples help brown eyes pop more, and electric greens are reserved for the true risk-takers. Click on the slideshow to see how you can try out the neon beauty trend for yourself!
