New York Design Week 2010: The Future Perfect: Lift Hold Roll

pThe Future Perfect’s show ema href=”http://thefutureperfect.com/blog.php?id=26″Lift Hold Roll/a/em challenged designers to create an object using a clamp, pulley or caster #8212; or any combination of these #8212; resulting in a tightly curated and at first glance, a very functional looking range of furniture, lamps and objects./p

pLimited to these simple utilitarian tools, most designers took the opportunity to add a layer of playfulness through the use of simple mechanical actions, unexpected function, and bright colors. Our favorite detail was the decorative treatment to the metal on Carrie Solomon’s em”Portable Candelabra”/em (pictured last)./p

Jon Burgerman’s Inkstrumental iPhone app

ustwo – the app developer that gave us Mouth Off and also the Granimator iPad app – has just released Inkstrumental, the interactive fruit of a collaboration with illustrator Jon Burgerman…

The idea for Inkstrumental is simple and fun – users ‘audition’ various Burgerman characters, each of which makes a particular sound (could be percussive, bassy, vocal or a bit synthy) when you tap him. So you decide which eight characters you want in your Inkstrumental band by scrolling along and pressing each character to see what they sound like on the screen below…

Then, with your eight characters selected you go to a screen like the one below where a looping beat plays (you get to choose the backing beat too). Simply press a character at just the moment when you’d like its sound to be added to the back beat et voila, you’re making music!

Once you’re happy with your new doctored beat, you can press the TV button on the screen and the band members are transported to a stage where they proudly perform your tune for you. You can send this film to the Inkstrumental YouTube channel or simply show your friends on your phone when you see them.

Here’s a short film of someone actually playing with Inkstrumental to help you get a better idea of the fun that can be had:

Jon Burgerman and ustwo are presenting Inkstrumental tomorrow evening in a special talk at 7pm at the Apple Store on Regent Street in London. Visit the apple website to find out more: apple.com/uk/retail/regentstreet/

AND, fans of Burgerman’s work might be interested to know he’s got a solo exhibition entitled Brain Drain, currently running at Winchester Discovery Centre until July 7. Here are some images:

Label Love: Gaspard Yurkievich Showcases Avant-Garde Classics

imageWho knew something as simple as a classic sheath dress or oversized tee could be made to look so unique and interesting? Gaspard Yurkievich, first known for his eclectic menswear, puts an avant-garde spin on would-be simple basics and classic garments. His new S/S 2010 collection showcases a collection of dresses, tops, pants and skirts that are on the verge of a classic silhouette, only to take a surprising turn in style detail or shape. Silky wovens of varying weights are presented in golden mustard, darkest navy, black, white and a blue and beige floral motif, as well as a smoky, cloudy grey pattern. Asymmetrical hems, flowing fabrics and emphasized shoulders define this breezy Ready-to-Wear collection of pieces and are made even more interesting when styled with layered knee-high socks and heeled sandals of mismatched colors. Blouses are sheer and embellished with mini ruffles and pleats, while many separates classic and stay classic and structured. Truly unique, but still completely wearable, Gaspard Yurkievich delivers and stays true to his personal aesthetic and is truly one-of-a-kind. Click on the slideshow to see some of my favorites from Gaspard Yurkievich’s S/S 2010 collection!

pimg alt=”mike_ditullo_headshot.jpg” src=”http://s3files.core77.com/blog/images/mike_ditullo_headshot.jpg” width=”468″ height=”417″ class=”mt-image-none” style=”” //p

pOur dear friend and Core77 favorite son, Mike DiTullo, is moving from http://www.nike.com”Nike/a to a href=”http://www.frogdesign.com/”frog design/a. Michael spent almost a decade at Nike, working on iconic products under their Nike, Jordan and Converse brands, and frequently collaborates with outside clients like a href=”http://icon4x4.com/”Icon/a. During that time, he has also been a super-contributor to the design community at large through Core77: moderating our a href=”http://boards.core77.com/”discussion forums/a (as a href=”http://boards.core77.com/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofileu=28″Yo/a), producing design events, blogging, and producing a series of “5 minute” a href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/broadcasts/core77_showtell_converse_design_director_michael_ditullo_sketches_a_sneaker_in_4minutes_10334.asp”sketcha/ a href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/broadcasts/core77_demo_converse_design_director_michael_ditullo_sketches_a_chair_in_5minutes_11608.asp”videos/a. He’s got a great new book out, a href=”http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/1166889″Analog Dreams, sketches of Michael Ditullo/a, and regularly speaks at design conferences, schools, and corporations on the value of design. Michael is a prolific creative and an unfailing advocate for our industry as a whole. He joins frog’s San Francisco studio July 1st as Creative Director./p

pMike is the latest in some great frog talent acquisitions (most recently a href=”http://www.core77.com/blog/business/think_global_jan_chipchase_moves_to_frog_design_16322.asp”Jan Chipchase/a of Nokia), and we wish him the best of luck at his new gig!/p

Pink Floyd Illustrator Gerald Scarfe Among Those Designing Skys World Cup TV Boxes

0519skybox2.jpg

A bit of fun promotional work from the UK branch of the Sky satellite television company. To a) join in on the soon-to-be World Cup madness and b) sell more product, they’ve released three new set top boxes, each designed by some iconic British creative person. Quadrophenia actor Phil Daniels has one, as does fashion designer Wayne Hemingway (which looks beautiful). But we were most excited by the one crafted by none other than illustrator/artist Gerald Scarfe, whose work you’ll likely be most familiar with would be his cover design for Pink Floyd‘s The Wall, as well as having created the animated sections for the band’s subsequent film of the same name. It’s all a big sales effort, sure, but we like the way they handle their sales efforts a lot more over in the UK. Here’s from Scarfe:

“The sense of excitement, anticipation – and dare I say it hope – that is growing in England as we approach the World Cup is tremendous. “Those emotions fueled my design – it captures what could be a wonderful moment of English glory and unity.”
