A Very James Bond Jacket

Have you ever ruined a movie, an interview, or maybe even a sexy date because you forgot to turn your phone off? If so, then you’ll appreciate this clever design called the Escape Jacket by Victor Johansson! The inner lining applies the interference principles of a Faradays cage to effectively block all radio frequencies, disabling the antenna so the phone doesn’t go off while simultaneously saving the battery. Just slide it in the inner pocket and fuggeddaboudit!

Designer: Victor Johansson

Smart Pants Kanavos!

According to designer Alexandros Stasinopoulos, Kanavos is a study on smartphone design and it explores the visual interaction between hardware and software. It features a number of vertical and horizontal contrast color stripes and relies on the strong windows interface design. Basically the hardware, the OS and the interface blend and complete each other.

Kanavos removes the “windows” button from the front-lower-centre part of the device and places it to its left and right sides. This is to facilitate the easier access to this function while holding the device.

No Place Like Home GPS shoes by Dominic Wilcox

These shoes by British designer Dominic Wilcox have LEDs in the toes that will guide you home no matter where you are (+ movie). Above movie is by Liam Saint-Pierre

One of the No Place Like Home shoes has GPS technology embedded in the heel and an antenna in the red ankle tag. It communicates wirelessly with the other shoe.

Custom-made software plots the location of home on a map before the data is uploaded to the shoe through a USB cable that plugs into the insole.

The ring of LEDs in the left toe points the wearer in the right direction while those on the right toe show the journey’s progress.

“I had done a doodle about a month previously on my ‘Sounds of Making in East London’ record cover of a shoe with a switch on the front,” Wilcox told Dezeen. “I think this was in my mind somehow, but I also thought about the Wizard of Oz and Dorothy’s shoes to take her home. Mostly it was just an idea for a pair of shoes that I wanted to own myself,” he added.

Dorothy’s red shoes are referenced in the red calf-leather lining, while Wilcox’s illustrations of different homes are etched on the soles.

Wilcox worked with technology expert Becky Stewart from Codasign and Northampton shoe makers Stamp Shoes. The project was commissioned by the Global Footprint project in Northamptonshire, an English county famous for shoe making.

The shoes are being shown at Wilcox’s solo exhibition during the London Design Festival at KK Outlet, 42 Hoxton Square, N1 6PB – scroll down for a map.

Forthcoming Bluetooth Gloves Let You Make Phone Calls Into Your Hand

0btoothgloves002.jpg

In a couple of weeks it’ll be October, the weather will get cooler in our neck of the woods, some will reach for gloves, and a European company called Hi-Fun will release a special pair of gloves called Hi-Call. As you can guess from the photo above, the gloves are wired up with Bluetooth connectivity, a mic in the pinky and a speaker in the thumb, so the wearer can actually make phone calls by making that “call me” gesture.

Early adopters of Bluetooth headsets looked foolish for a short time, before we all got used to seeing people walking around talking to no one. Should these gloves take off, there’ll probably be another brief adjustment period where you think a crazy person is talking into their hand. Early Hi-Call adopters will probably be given extra personal space on the sidewalk, at least for a few weeks.

This demo is a bit underwhelming, but at least they show that the thing works and is real:

Hi-Fun may be the first to market with these, but they’re not the first to come up with the concept. A San-Francisco-based hacker named Rachel shared her Instructable for Bluetooth gloves here, and the comments for it indicate other people have produced something similar.
