Lord Of The Sign Rings

Sign Language Ring is a set of rings and a bracelet capable of detecting sign language and translating them. Essentially, the device is able to detect sign language motions and can translate them to voice feedback. Conversely, it can translate voice to text. Inspired by the Buddhist prayer beads, the text is displayed on a screen on the top of the bracelet.

  • Sign Language Ring is a translation device in the form of a bracelet with detachable rings.
  • When worn on the fingers of the person using sign language, the rings detect and track the signing motions.
  • These are translated to voice, which is emitted by the bracelet.
  • The user can pre-record their signing movements and assign the appropriate words, which allows the system to be customized to the user’s particular gestures.
  • After use, the rings can be set into the bracelet for storage.

The Sign Language Ring is a 2013 Red Dot Award: Design Concept Winner.

Designers: Cao Zu-Wei, Hu Ya-Chun, Huang Ching-Lan, Liao Po-Yang, Tsai Yu-Chi & Yang Yi-Hsien

Who Would’ve Thought: The Best Way to Play Tetris is on the Side of a Building

Tetris-Lead.jpg

The 29-story Cira Centre building in Philadelphia has received a makeover of monstrous proportions for this year’s Philly Tech Week. Frank Lee, a professor at Drexel University, designed a building-sized Tetris game. The arcade favorite took over two sides of the structure, of which were in competition to see who could better fit the falling pieces together. Just as in real life, the game was played using joysticks that were integrated to the building’s LED lights through 4G. Check out this video to see it in action:

HUD for Performance Sailors

When it comes to sailboat racing, the difference between winning & losing is the ability to adapt a carefully orchestrated plan to the ever-changing natural & competitive environment, faster than the competition. The key is having the right info at the right time. The Afterguard system provides this info by combining fighter style HUD with boat instrumentation data to give the best situational intelligence & performance metrics at a glance, on a small display mounted on sunglasses made for the harshest of environments.

StartSequence: at a glance the user will know with certainty how the boat is tracking to the start line, freeing the crew to concentrate on the speed build and competition for the perfect star. This is made possible by the intelligent time-to-kill metric that uses the boat’s current heading and speed to calculate the exact amount of time the boat must kill before crossing the line precisely at the gun.

Performance Dashboard: this displays the relevant information to any given crew member, from the helmsman to the trimmer. Metrics include boat speed, speed over ground, wind angle, wind speed, polar targets, heel and depth.

Virtual Tactician: this feature removes the guesswork associated with making a mark or clearing a boat. By tracking the user’s gaze and combining it with the system’s data the user will be able to make split second tactical decisions with relying on a hand bearing compass, lines marked on the deck or other basic means. Simply put, the user will be able to look at another boat and gauge whether they are ahead and whether there is room to cross.

Get Lost in ‘Monument Valley,’ the M.C. Escher of iPad Games

MonumentValley-Lead.jpg

There can’t be a more perfect setting for a mystical, digital playland than M.C. Escher’s dizzying artwork. Monument Valley an iPad app by ustwo has the player interacting with surreal architecture and solving sculptural puzzles in an attempt to help a damsel in distress—Princess Ida, in this case. (Because what game would be complete without a princess in need?)

MonumentValley-Sketches.jpg

While most of our other time-consuming guilty pleasure apps focus more on timed completions than pretty scenery (I’m looking at you, Bejeweled/Fruit Ninja), the scenes found in Monument Valley encourage a bit of dilly-dallying. As one of the designers rightly puts it: “Every screenshot can be printed and hung on a wall.” Check out a behind-the-scenes walk-through with the game’s designers:
