PEN Your Story Challenge

Pen_Your_Story.jpg

With the Olympus PEN E-PL1, you can take your photography to new places. Compact like a point-and-shoot, it packs an SLR-quality sensor, HD video recording, and eye-popping in-camera filters. Its Live Guide makes experimenting with depth-of-field and shutter speeds easier than ever. (Check out CH’s review and field test of the EPL1’s predecessor, the E-P1.)

What would you do with this much camera in the palm of your hand? Direct a digital film? Document an expedition? Olympus offers the chance —and $5,000 to make it happen—with its “PEN Your Story Challenge.”

Voters on YouTube will nominate the top 20 video proposals. From this group, judges from Olympus and the YouTube community will select six finalists. They’ll receive their own E-PL1 and $5,000 for their projects.

EPL1_Front.jpg EPL1_back.jpg

Once the finalists have uploaded their completed projects to YouTube, voters and Olympus judges will crown the Grand Prize winner, who’ll win a trip to New York City and an invitation to the US Open on Olympus Day. The winner’s project will be showcased at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

To enter, submit a video proposal on how you’ll unleash the E-PL1’s innovative features to www.youtube.com/getolympus. There, you’ll find tips on producing your submission from Erik Beck of Indy Mogul. More details can be found on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and at getolympus.com. The contest is open to US and Canadian residents.

Philips unveils cool-looking light bulb replacement

pToday at the Lightfair trade show Philips takes the wraps off its A HREF=”http://www.newsinfusion.com/philips/” new 12-watt EnduraLED light bulb/A, meant to replace the standard 60-watt incandescent. The form factor of the EnduraLED is similar enough to the standard bulb that it will fit in the same places and fixtures, and the quality of light is designed to be similar, though the EnduraLED draws a fraction of the power and will last some 25 times longer. /p

pEven though most people will rarely see the bulb in un-lit form, we love the futuristic way it looks, from the yellow glaze (presumably to tint the light to what we’re used to) to those cool metallic grooves in the body and bulb surface:/p

pNo word on pricing yet, though they mention the bulb will save the average household about $120 throughout its life./p

Have a Coke and a seat

pAs you can A HREF=”http://www.core77.com/gallery/milan-design-week-2010/65.asp” see in our gallery/A, last month at Milan Coca-Cola took the wraps off of A HREF=”http://emecowithcoke.com/information” a special variant of Emeco’s Navy chair/A made from 111 recycled Coke bottles. The project has been a long time coming: /p

blockquoteAbout four years ago, in 2006, Coca-Cola came to us at Emeco with a proposal. Their recycling plant in Spartanburg South Carolina was brand new and processing thousands of plastic bottles a day and they were looking for ways to show the value of recycled plastic. Everywhere else in the world people recycle about 80% of their bottles while in the US we recycled only about 20%.

pCoke asked us to make the classic Navy Chair out of a new, unproven formulation of rPET (Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate- recycled plastic bottles). They introduced us to the scientists at BASF the international chemical innovator and together we developed proprietary mix made of about 60% and a special combination of pigment combined with glass fiber for strength./p

pIn Coke-Speak, “The goal of the 111 Navy project was to alter consumer behavior by illustrating the value of rPET with beautifully designed and everyday products – ultimately encouraging more recycling.”/blockquote/p

Hot In The Hive: Russian Nesting Doll Flash Drive

imageComputers used to be the size of a conference room and required so many extra steps to do a simple procedure that brain surgery seemed only slightly harder than writing a document. Technology has no doubt changed drastically over the years. Now we have a little something called the internet, as well as laptops and computers that can fit into the palm of your hand. It’s only logical that with a society that now relies heavily on computer data and usage, accessories and other cute, functional items for your computer and laptops are popping up everywhere. The Russian Nesting Doll flash drive is one of the more interesting and randomly fun computer/ laptop accessories out there and with 2GB of memory, it allows you to save and share your work while giving your job or school projects a touch of whimsy. Plus, this cute Russian Nesting Doll flash drive is so unique and colorful, that you’ll easily spot which is your jump drive amongst the usual, more boring flash drive selections!

Price: $28.00
Who Found It: idabone was first to add the Russian Nesting Doll Flash Drive to the Hive.

Simplification trends in product design

Since the dawn of time, inventors have searched for ways to build the proverbial better mousetrap. Engineers envision a society where everything is (to steal from Kanye West Daft Punk) “harder, better, faster, stronger.” Our cold relief medicines don’t just treat a runny nose, they treat “sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy-head, fever” ailments. Bring on the bells! Bring on the whistles!

A counterculture has gained prominence, however, in the technological community that is focusing their efforts on simplification instead of pure optimization. Case in point, the new Vscan from GE:

The pocket-size ultrasound imaging device is straightforward, bare-bones diagnostic equipment. It’s the ultrasound equivalent of a stethoscope and it costs under $8,000. It doesn’t do the things a six-figure, mini-fridge size, full-blown feature ultrasound machine can do, but that isn’t its purpose. Medics can carry it into crash sites and on the battle field, rural doctors can bring it directly to their patients, and primary care physicians can do preliminary scans in their offices before sending patients to specialists.

The Economist calls new products like the Vscan “frugal innovations” in their April special report on emerging markets. The article “First break all the rules” looks specifically at India and China and how manufacturers are “working backwards” to make simpler products:

Instead of adding ever more bells and whistles, they strip the products down to their bare essentials … Frugal innovation is not just about redesigning products; it involves rethinking entire production processes and business models.

The rise of simplification trends in product designs means that more people can get what they want without extraneous features, and usually at a reasonable price. Obviously, I’m a fan of this trend and I look forward to learning about what comes into the market. Be sure to check out the full article to learn about more products like the Vscan that reflect this simplification trend.
