Illy’s new compact espresso machine designed for the Internet generation

Y1_illy_3.jpg

Y1, Illy’s latest coffee machine, is the result of three years of research and development led by Carlo Bach, art director of illycaffè, along with the firm MM Design. Made with an eye on the so-called “Y Generation,” its innovative and eye-catching compact design (it measures just under 10″ square) hides each component inside the little base, which doubles as storage for cups. Materials, such as aluminum, glass and stainless steel, not only lend quality but are recyclable too.

Of course clever design is only as good as the taste of the coffee it produces, which Illy’s metodo Iperespresso capsule system guarantees. Based on five patents and developed to allow the optimal extraction of coffee aromas, the system also makes the requisite velvety and long-lasting “crema.”

The Y1 sells online from Illy for the introductory price of $125 (or €160 in Europe).

Lights, Geometry and Kinetics at Frieze 2010

Fractal sculptures take center stage at London’s biggest art fair

freize-eliasson.jpg Freize-Saraceno.jpg

With the resurgence of handmade and traditional craftsmanship consuming the design industry, it came as no surprise that this year’s Frieze Art Fair was filled with beautifully-executed DIY style—from artworks as text to compositions crafted from beads. Juxtaposed against the handmade charm however, an exciting theme of lights and kinetic geometry married art and science for an innovative approach to sculpture.

Olafur Eliasson‘s “Untitled Sphere” (working title) (2010), a dramatic geodesic light sculpture, doubles as a lampshade. Matte black on the outside with yellow foiled mirror triangles inside, the faceted sphere creates infinite reflections of light and images inside the shade. (Pictured above right.)

Next to Eliasson’s piece at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery’s stand, Tomas Saraceno‘s “Hydrogen Cloud Explosion” (2010), a suspended geometric sculpture of transparent acrylic and tensile strings, seemed to explode outwards in the opposite direction of Eliasson’s heavy glittering imploding shade.

frieze-Sarcevic.jpg frieze-Kruip.jpg

All the reflections created by Bojan Sarcevic‘s transparent deconstructionist sculpture of thin acrylic inside a glass vitrine almost rendered the work invisible. At The Approach Gallery Germaine Kruip cast more spellbinding light around with his “Counter Composition III” (2008), a geometric mirror sculpture that smoothly rotates in different directions, fragmenting the view from all sides.

frieze-lygia.jpg frieze-espirtu1.jpg

Less disorienting, Lygia Clark‘s “Desfolhado” (1960) sculpture complements her minimalist geometric collages and urges you to pick up the aluminum-hinged construction and explore its many folding forms. Clark’s work from the ’50s and ’60s seemingly inspired the contemporary fold prints by Iran do Espírito Santo at the Ingelby Gallery, “Twist 6B” and “Twist 6C” (2010).

slotawa-hyughe.jpg

Florian Slotawa‘s series of white pendant lights, “SG 07” (2010), at the Sies + Höke Gallery, played host to parasitic geometric limbs protruding at strange angles. At the Marian Goodman Gallery, Pierre Huyghe‘s vaguely sinister aluminum and LED mask called “The Host and the Cloud” (2010), looked like it might be used as protection from Saraceno’s nearby “Hydrogen Cloud Explosion.”

shawcross.jpg

But the highlight of this theme of light and kinetic geometry was spotted at the Victoria Miro Gallery, in Conrad Shawcross’ “Limit of Everything” (2010). This revolving light sculpture echoed many of the pieces that came before, expansive as Saraceno’s “Hydrogen Cloud,” moving smoothly as Kruip’s “Counter Composition III” and as angular as Slotawa’s light arms. Shawcross’ mechanical pinwheel was a beautiful, ever changing, semaphoric display of minimalism.

Wanderfly

Make travel planning effortless with a new user-friendly site
wanderfly1.jpg

Simplifying the art of travel planning, the new website Wanderfly helps people choose an adventure best suited to their interests. Co-founder Evan Schneyer, who was personally frustrated with online user experience, explains they created Wanderfly because “We believe the fun should start from the very moment you decide to go.” The recommendation engine generates information from partners like Expedia, Foursquare, Not For Tourists, Lonely Planet and more, allowing people to fully customize their next trip or explore the options.

wanderfly2.jpg

For users who want a general overview, choosing a departing city, time frame and budget will automatically find the best deals and supply an exhaustive list of destinations and activities. If your needs are more specific—maybe a four-day beach holiday in mid-January filled with culture, entertainment and parties—Wanderfly comes up with more precise suggestions, in this case Oranjestad, Aruba or Bathsheba, Barbados.

Modifying filters is easy too. Start with romance and food and add culture or change anything else by simply clicking the filter icons. Altering the time frame and budget, requires minimal effort too; deciding between locations requires little more than a click of the button to show multiple trips at once for comparison.

wanderfly4.jpg

Also valuable is the rich, personalized information Wanderfly sources for each location. Along with news and weather, Wanderfly scans Facebook, showing you which of your friends are in each city you’re exploring.

If the intuitive design isn’t enough, Wanderfly livens search time up with inspirational travel quotes and helpful tips to get you excited about skipping town.

Shape Changing is Real: Blob Motility by the Wakita Lab

A friend of ours loves to joke that the future will have no hard edges; experience will be defined in pastel-colored gels, foams and mists that deliver your voicemail and bring you milk. Probably to his dismay, this new project from the Wakita Laboratoray at Keio University may one day prove him right.

Blob Motility is an early phase of a new “actuated shape display using programmable matter.” With it, A gel substance can be programmed to a specific geometry and topology, resulting in organic shape-changing in real space—not unlike a “metaball” in computer graphics, as the lab points out.
