Digital Data Printer

While digital technology has made it possible to share books, music, magazines and other media on super-compact devices like phones and tablets, there’s still a certain something lacking by not being able to hand over a tangible representation of what you’d like to share. Oksu is a digital data printer concept taps into this level of sharing by making it possible to instantly “print” a tangible copy of a song, article, link or file that can be physically shared between individuals. Hit the jump to see just how it works!

No ink cartridge needed! The printer uses Z-Ink technology, where color pigments are already within the paper and only need to be activated. Also, NFC chip technology makes it possible to open the contents of the printed card simply by placing it on the device the user wishes to load it on.

Slim n Sleek Helium

Helium ‘The Easy Phone’ is quite something! It is slim and sleek, almost like a candy bar. The main purpose behind its ideation is to provide a handy device for hardcore business folks who need a phone to call. This is the reason why there was only a front camera incorporated initially. However market diktats have forced in some key essentials like a 5 – MP rear camera and quad headphones. Have look inside….

Chris Rieger’s Levitating, Wirelessly-Powered LED Light

0crieger.jpg

WOW this is awesome. Eighteen-year-old Chris Rieger, an engineering student at Australia’s University of Queensland, has developed a wireless LED light that floats. The damn thing levitates, it’s not physically connected to anything. Before I go any further, you must have a look:

So how does it work? The short answer is magnets; the long, scientific answer with supporting links is here.

For inspiration Rieger credits the work of the Discovery Channel’s Jeff Lieberman, the pioneer who did something similar in the mid-2000s and paved the way for others to improve upon it; the levitation work of mad scientist and tinkerer Eirik Taylor; and the wireless power transfer work of a Croatian tinkerer going by the handle Marko.

iPad Surface Design

Be honest, did it not cross your mind that what if iPad was the one with an integrated keyboard and not the Microsoft Surface? Well it did cross designer Luis Fonseca’s mind and apparently much before the Surface was revealed. So this is his take on the iPad 4 with all its innovations. He predicts a built-in keyboard, Bang & Olufsen speakers, 12-megapixel-1080p camera, and an aluminum frame. His idea is to design a complete laptop replacement and not just a tablet overhaul.

The keyboard slides out from the bottom and it comes with a portable hard disk, quad core CPU and an 7 to 8 inch display. As far as concepts go, this one is quite good for the iPad, but you never know with the design team, Jony Ive and Job’s spirit guidance. This may as well not be the direction that Apple takes!

Will Tri-Colored Dots Supplant QR Codes?

0picapicam.jpg

Casio uses what’s called “visible light communication technology” in their new PicapiCamera iPhone app, which at first blush seems like nothing more than an overly simplistic version of a QR code. But while it’s undoubtedly more simple, it could potentially see more uptake than the unpopular-with-consumers QR technology.

The PicapiCamera app flashes, on-screen, a circle that alternates between being red, green and blue. The camera on another iPhone captures those color changes, which are in fact encoded data in the form of a single 8-bit word and ID number. The receiving phone then sends that code up into the cloud, using it as a key to download attendant data to the receiving phone.

Because the technology is simpler, it can provide a much longer reach. For example, you need to be right on top of a QR code to snap a photo of it; with Casio’s app, if the flashing dot was increased in size to say, 30 centimeters, it could be picked up by phones as far as 100 meters away. Meaning you could conceivably blanket an entire train platform, airport concourse or sidewalk outside of a movie theater, for instance.

Escale Numérique by Mathieu Lehanneur

French designer Mathieu Lehanneur has created a series of Wi-Fi stations in Paris where people can sit down to use their laptops or access local information via a large screen.

Mathieu Lehanneur Escale Numerique

Named Escale Numérique, which translates as Digital Break, the proposal won a competition to design street furniture that links with the underground fibre-optic network so residents and visitors without mobile internet access can connect on the move.

Concrete swivel chairs with attached tables for laptops sit underneath a foliage-covered shelter and a large digital billboard provides city information and news for those who don’t have a laptop or smartphone with them.

A cluster of wooden legs like tree trunks support the green roof, which is designed to look like a garden when viewed from balconies above.

The project was realised in collaboration with outdoor advertising company JCDecaux.

Here’s some more information from the designer:

JCDecaux and Mathieu Lehanneur won the call for projects by the Mairie de Paris devoted to intelligent furniture with Escale Numérique, a connected haven of peace available to everyone.

Mathieu Lehanneur Escale Numerique

Set up on the Rond Point des Champs-Elysées, Escale Numérique is a revival of the underground fibre optic network which is now supplying the capital, ‘Like the Wallace fountains, which since the end of the 19th century have offered Parisian the free drinking water which was circulating beneath their feet, Escale Numérique allows everyone to benefit, like a real public service, from a high-speed WIFI connection by raising it from beneath the ground.’

Mathieu Lehanneur Escale Numerique

For his first urban development project, Mathieu Lehanneur devised a protective shelter with a plant covered roof, like ‘A garden placed on a few tree trunks’ and designed to be as attractive when viewed from the ground as from a balcony.

The hard-wearing concrete swivel seats are equipped with plugs and have mini tables attached to rest an elbow, a book or a computer.

A large touch screen provides updated information about services in the city: guides, news and augmented reality for tourists and visitors who are not online.

Mathieu Lehanneur Escale Numerique

Escale Numérique is a forerunner for a new range of urban architecture where virtual reality dictates the shape of what is real in order to live with even greater fluidity.
