Modern, Non-Stuffy Wing Chairs For Stylish Lounging

For some reason, wingback chairs have gotten an unfortunate reputation for being in the homes of the old and stuffy. Your grandfather may have had an imposing tufted leather wingback chair you wouldn’t dare touch. But the old and stuffy were definitely onto something with these chairs. They’re designed to be super comfortable and offer some great support in case you ever dose off. The winged nature of the chair gives a place for your head to rest when you start tilting to the side. Now you know why your grandfather loved that chair so much! These days, you don’t have to look stodgy when sitting in a wing chair. In fact, many styles these days mesh well with your modern decor. Some like the Painted Dot iChair with built-in speakers from PB Teen are downright playful! Another one of my favorites is the Lambert recliner for maximum comfort when reading or taking a quick nap. Recession Chic: Shop Like A French Woman

At first glance, shopping like a French woman doesn’t exactly seem like the most economically sensible thing to be doing right now. But give me a chance and hear me out. These days, we’ve been shopping based on the lowest price tags and highest discounts we can find. I admit I’ve purchased things that didn’t fit or wasn’t my style just because it was 75% off. Staring into a closet full of clothes I don’t care to wear, I’ve started taking tips from the French! The first thing to do is go shopping with a plan. Much like making a grocery list before you go to the supermarket, make a list of what you need before you go to the mall. That way, you won’t get sidetracked and go home with a bunch of clothes and accessories you don’t need. Another suggestion is to figure out the cost-per-wear for what you’re buying. A $500 high quality trench coat you wear three times a week for a year makes the cost per wear to be about $3. A trench coat made of a lesser quality may cost less at the beginning, but it could mean you have to buy a new one every few months. Also consider and assess every purchase you make. A neon dress may be an of the moment trend, but may not be something you want to wear 5 years down the line. Follow these rules and you’ll be surprised at how much you can get out of a few simple pieces of clothing. Here’s my list of essential items every French woman has in her closet, and you should too! Be sure to check out the slideshow to see where you can get the goods.

1. Don’t be afraid to spend the big bucks on well-fitting suit! You can wear the whole thing together at business meetings or just wear the jacket with jeans for a semi-casual night out.
2. Ballet flats is a stylish and comfortable shoe choice for low-key days.
3. A trench coat is utilitarian, but slap on some red lipstick and suddenly you’re a film noir star!

Bring Out Your Wild Side With Help From Stylehive’s Stylescopes!

In preparation for spring, we were all about the festive egg-dye pastels and quintessential floral prints, but now that the Easter bunny has come and gone, we at Stylehive are looking for fashion inspiration from some much more stylish critters. Animal print may scare off some traditionally demure girls who have always written off zebra, leopard, giraffe, and boa as patterns suited only for the tacky and fashionably loud and best left on the African Savannah, but the celestial spirits are here to prove that wild prints can be both sophisticated and sexy! For example, Virgos can look forward to brightening things up in an eye-popping orange leopard tank, while Aries girls will keep it subtle and classy in a printed party dress! Whether you’re destined to sport stripes, spots, or scales, you’re bound to look hot while walking on the wild side this week! Check out the slideshow to see what kind of animal print best suits your sign!

Excite Your Eyes with Vertical Stripes!

Remember when they told us that horizontal stripes made you look fat? By all means, stay AWAY from horizontal stripes! That golden fashion rule was ingrained into our style-psyche for years and years until large black and white horizontal stripes became the next big trend and everyone couldn’t wait to walk around looking like pseudo-Parisians everyday, causing cravings for berets and lattes in all innocent on-lookers. The new stripe trend to hit is that of the vertical black and white stripe! Scientists are now saying that vertical stripes can be a frenemy in the “looking fat” department, but runway giants like Gucci, Herve Leger by Max Azria, and Ann Demeulemeester have all embraced the trend. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather take fashion advice from the fashion experts! Black and white is a classic contrast combination and is only punched up more by the visually exciting look of vertical stripes. The pattern is versatile and looks great in a lightweight wool for a structured blazer, or a gauzy chiffon for a flirty yet sophisticated day-to-night dress. Vertical stripes are also great for elongating the figure and can make legs look like they go on forever! The trick is to not wear super thin vertical stripes close together. This will cause a visual sensory overload and you run the risk of looking like a wobbly optical illusion. Stripes in varying widths is the most flattering such as wide black stripes and thin white ones for example, or look for stripes that have a slight diagonal tilt to it. If you like what you see but want to take it for a test-drive first, opt for accessories like bags, scarves or hats that feature the vertical stripe pattern. Really be a trendsetter and try vertical stripes with this spring’s pop citrus colors!

Lacoste Gives Us A Lesson In Crocodile Mythology

I remember my very first Lacoste experience. I wore one of their polos to my first day of kindergarten (yes, I was way ahead of my time). I was so proud of the shirt that I went up to my teacher and said with boyish excitement, “Look! I have a crocodile on my shirt!” Fast forward to today and I still get excited when I don one of their polos. I go up to total strangers on the street and say with boyish excitement, “Look! I have a crocodile on my shirt!” In any matter, the crocodile has become synonymous with the savvy sportswear brand since Rene Lacoste started it over 75 years ago. To celebrate Lacoste’s chic crocodile, they have created a collection of shoes that cleverly incorporates mythologies associated with crocodiles all around the world. The Ogata India is inspired by Hindu temple motifs and tells the ancient myth of the Hindu philosopher Shankara and his relationship with the Mugger Crocodile. The Tennis Polynesia uses rich brown tones of the New Guinea Crocodile and wood carvings of the Nuga, a half man half crocodile that is associated with the creation of the world. The urban legend of monstrous crocodiles in the sewers of New York City are showcased in the street-chic Revan 3 NYC, and the Rene Lacoste Japan (my personal favorite) tells the story of a blind men who was left to drown by his cruel sons via a gorgeous crocodile skin print upper inspired from traditional Japanese silk kimono. The other styles in the limited collection are created from crocodile mythologies from South Africa, Egypt, West Africa and Brazil. See some pics of the collection in the slideshow, then read more about these crocodile myths at www.lacostecrocmyths.com.

Vintage Fashionistas Are Walking On Sunshine!

By now you must know that yellow is THE color of the season. Fashion runways all over New York and Europe showed clothing and accessories in every shade from dandelion to canary, sunflower to goldenrod. And while Reese Witherspoon and Cate Blanchett have rocked stunning yellow dresses on the red carpet, most women I know still believe that yellow doesn’t look good on them. Au contraire! Anyone can wear any color; it’s just about picking the right shade to flatter your hair and skin tone. So while your brunette best friend might look great in a Crayola shade, if you’re a fair-skinned blonde, you’ll want to go a bit brighter. And if you’re still feeling afraid to wear little ol’ yellow, spice up your look with some sunshine-colored accessories or a print that has yellow as only one of its dominant hues. The slide show has loads of vintage finds to get you buttered up. Just click to see the selection!

Spring For Leather Jackets!

I’m a girl who believes in wearing a fabulous leather jacket in all transitional seasons. Sure, it may seem like leather jackets should be reserved for fall and winter, but with 3/4 sleeve options and cute details, why not bust them out in the spring? They’ll protect you from the elements and bring a little bit of city chic to any outfit. Think cute details, swing styles, and above all, wearability! I love the look of Donna Karan’s asymmetrical zip jacket– it has just the perfect balance of feminine and flirtacious. For the girl who brings the sunshine, I think this Soca St. John ruffle leather jacket is just the ticket. Check out my slideshow for some cute leather jackets for spring!
