Top Off Your Look With A Boater Hat!

imagePicture yourself in a boat on a river…. The Beatles may have had something there. We’ve seen the fedora come and go and the floppy sun hat loitering around, but the new shape in hats is… drumroll please… the boater hat. It’s a classic silhouette, but the mini boater hat from Pixie Market was the first to re-catch our eye, now we can’t stop spotting them on the style-set in the streets. We love this perfect straw boater hast with grosgrain ribbon from Brooks Brothers & suggest you give this new/old shape a try.

Denim Jackets That Never Go Out Of Style!

imageDenim jackets really never go out of style and they keep getting updated each season with more stylized looks to keep them fresh and modern. I’ve been wearing my H&M Stella McCartney denim jacket for the last few years and it’s always been a great summer staple. I really want to update my look this summer so I’m looking around for a new piece with the same kind of versatility. I love this Pilot Denim Jacket ($178 at Anthropologie). It’s got a great denim wash and it’s has a perfect casual/dressy ratio to it when paired with a summery dress. Other denim jackets I’m really diggin’ are the Mike & Chris Gibson Jacket ($345), J. Crew’s Denim Safari Jacket ($98), and the Current/Elliott Snap Jacket ($274 at Shopbop). Check out more summer style staples over at Coquette!

Bright-Rimmed Sunglasses Put A Summery Spin On Shades

imageYou may think you’ve got it covered in the sunglasses arena with your trusty rimless aviators and black wayfarers that you switch off depending on your mood and outfit. However, while that 90’s comeback fad of blinding neon clothing slowly fades out this summer, bold colors are finding a new outlet — your shades! This season’s sunglasses are all about bright frames and rims, and with all the brands jumping on this technicolor trend (high-end and super-affordable alike!), you’re bound to find yourself getting bored with your tortoise shell shields fast. Go for designer pair in your favorite or most wearable color, or collect a whole rainbow’s worth of shades to go with any outfit! They’re not only a great way to draw attention and exude personality even while hiding behind your glasses, but they’re also a surefire way to get into the poolside mood, pronto! Check out the slideshow to see a variety of some vivid frames!

Ed Westwick’s A GQ Man

imageWhen it comes to “Gossip Girl,” it isn’t just the ladies in the cast who are fashion plates. Frequent Versace wearer Chace Crawford has just been named People’s Hottest Bachelor, Penn Badgley did a GQ spread in December, and now Ed Westwick is reminding the world: yes, I used to model. The 21-year-old star has his turn in GQ this month, showing off men’s style for the fall (just as it’s warming up! Don’t you love fashion?). Click on over to SOAPnet for a sneak peek at some of the pics, along with more celebrity and style news!

Meet Rad Hourani, Indie Fashion Designer Darling

imageIf the relentless, marketing-driven McFashion Machine has you trend-weary, Rad Hourani feels your pain. “I’m allergic to trends,” explains the cerebral designer in the latest edition of prim. Magazine. “There’s nothing scarier than making fashion – or anything else, for that matter – that everyone agrees on.” Unlike so many of his big-name peers on the luxury conglomerate payroll, Hourani makes gender-blind clothing (“for people who do not define themselves primarily as men or women”) that are independent even of the seasons, fashion or otherwise. “Fashion is about clothes transcending simple functionality and gaining symbolic, evocative power by engaging in a dialogue with their environment and time.” Read the full interview at PrimMagazine.com.

Recession Chic: Belts Under $50

imageA great belt is a fashion staple that will serve you well, whether it’s to define your waist in a baggy dress or shirt or dress up an otherwise plain jeans and t-shirt combination. These are tough times, ladies, but I have found lots of cute, colorful belts to dress up your wardrobe, all for under $50! This gorgeous bouquet sash belt from J. Crew is just $35 and will spice up any outfit with floral flair! This Belgo Lux open weave belt strikes just the right notes of preppy and bohemian. Or for a hot pop of color, there’s the Another Line covered snake textured belt from Nordstrom. Check out my slideshow for other belts that cinch the waist and not the wallet!

Influential International Style: Kate Winslet

imageKate Winslet made a serious splash this awards season, and I’m not just talking about taking home all the most coveted hardware and, quite remarkably on its own, being nominated in supporting and leading categories for two different films. On the red carpet, Kate made heads turn. Favoring solid colors and classic shapes, Kate always picks looks that flatter her hourglass figure. Her style is defined by clean lines (she is rarely photographed in patterns) but carries just enough interest to keep us constantly wondering what she’ll wear next. Whether its Zac Posen, Dolce & Gabbana, Carmen Marc Valvo or Escada, she always looks good. Check out my slideshow for ways to adopt Kate Winslet’s your (friendship with Leonardo Dicaprio not included). Photo credit: PR Photos

Silk Scarves Are Summer’s Perfect Accessory!

imageSilk scarves are the perfect accessory. They’re a wonderful burst of color, perfect for breaking up a summer outfit. Bad hair day? Tie one around your hair for a chic, bohemian look. One of my favorites for the season is Diane von Furstenberg’s Techno Color Bark scarf, so fresh and cute. For a preppier look, there’s the AKA New York floral finge scarf from Shopbop. The yellow, black and teal pattern would look just gorgeous with a white tee and jeans for a slightly dressier look for a day on the town. The Echo ethnic garden square silk chiffon scarf is a perfect beach companion. Check out my slideshow for other cute silk scarves for summer!

Cute Things To Put Stuff In

imageSometimes you’ve just got too much stuff. Or, perhaps, sometimes it just feels like it. As a girl with a problem with misplacing things (my friends like to apply the term “loser”), there’s no system I haven’t tried when it comes to organizing all of my loose ends. Fittingly, I get excited when I see things that can contain my things. Especially if they’re cute things that I can put those things in. When your recycled shoe box just isn’t doing it for you and your home, there’s a basket, box, bucket, cup, or tray out there to bring your room (and your pile of things) together. Now, it may not help you find where your things are — for me, there’s really no hope there — but at least it’ll help you express and articulate what impeccably good taste in decorating you have!

Video Style Steal: Lykke Li In “Breaking It Up”

imageMany pop stars throw around some sultry rock n’ roll looks for their videos and magazine spreads, leaving us feeling like they’re playing dress up. Not as much can be said for Swedish songstress Lykke Li— she is the real deal. With her long blond hair and angelic eyes rimmed in black liner she is one part angel, one part rock goddess. In her video for hit song “Breaking It Up,” she exudes fierce and unapologetic sex appeal. The video feels as though it’s set in a modern day Warhol-esque factory and features Lykke dancing around in a totally enviable outfit. A body conscious black dress topped off with an oversized white jacket and some black booties may sound boring at first, but it’s anything but. To get the look, try Opening Ceremony’s zip up back lattice dress. While she wears a more exaggerated silhouette jacket, I think the Madison Marcus “Alliance” jacket would work just as well. Dangerously high black booties are funked up a little bit by layering some mid calf white socks. Don’t forget to pile on the rings- one on each finger if you can, or fake it with Bijules’ bar ring that covers three fingers. A long statement chain necklace adds the perfect amount of glam and rock chic making simple black and white look so good. Watch the video and check out the slideshow to see how to get Lykke’s look!
