Get Organized For Back-To-School (Or Just Life) With A New Planner Or Notebook!

imageEvery year when back to school season rolled around, I would vow to be a different, new and improved me. I vowed to always have my make-up done, my outfits coordinated, and my schedule organized. Yeah, right. I rolled out of bed with 10 minuted to spare and threw on whatever was clothes. I usually didn’t have time for even mascara, and forget packing a lunch! One thing that I always did do right? My daily planner! I would go weeks before school started and start browsing bookstores and retail shelves, searching for that one daily planner that would contain me and all my plans within it in a neat rectangle while at the same time proclaiming my individuality and self-expression to the world through its cover art. I would fill out the information in my neatest handwriting and, for the next month, take the extra time out to jot down assignments or swim meets and weekend plans. Then, inevitably, I would forget to use it, fall behind on the dates, get frustrated and throw it under my bed for the rest of the year. It wasn’t until I was a little older and out of school that I discovered the notebook. Ok, I didn’t discover the notebook that late in life. I just realized that a large part of my daily planner refusal problem was the fact that the dates were already printed out for you in predetermined squares. While that might help some people, it discouraged me. I realized that a small notebook, lined or not, was what I actually needed. No pre-set dates that demand you to find something interesting to write in them (in case I ever lost it and some stranger found it, flipped through it and decided I was boring) and no pages allotted for random notes that, if you went over, you felt like a textual version of a blabber-mouth. The only thing that stayed the same? Browsing numerous bookstores to find the one that said, “Hi! I’m unique and spontaneous, but am also responsible and reliable!” So whether you prefer a daily planner to a notebook, check out our slideshow to find one that expresses who you are!

Shop In Style With Splendicity’s Fun Fall Fashion Ideas!

imageFall is a fun time for fashionistas — slouchy sweaters, pretty coats, cozy boots and warm, textured fabrics highlight the season. Let’s take a look at some of the latest fashion trends and shopping deals for fall.

Hot Handbags: You don’t need to spend a small fortune to get into the fall trends. These handbags for under $100 are on trend for the season. Look for bags with lots of texture — studs, fringe, ruffles and pleats.

Sensational Shoes & Boots: When it comes to footwear, look for these warm colors that are perfect for cool weather. My favorite is definitely cranberry red — a staple in my fall wardrobe. Velvet vampy shoes are also hot this season. If you are looking for boots, check out the coolest choices in fall boots, from flat riding boots to dramatic over-the-knee styles.

Are Baggy, Footless Tights In Your Fashion Future?

imageI’m all for most hosiery trends, whether it be two-toned, crazy-patterned, or studded leg wear. And I’ve never been an opponent of “tights as pants,” as long as it’s done tastefully. But I have to admit that I don’t know what to make of Wolford’s Voile leggings/footless tights. Isn’t hosiery supposed to be fitted, not baggy? I have to say that these look like the cheap stockings sold at drugstores and bodegas, which are barely adequate when you’re in a bind and create a very unsexy-looking leg. These leggings, however, aren’t inexpensive, and retail for about $62. They not only look weird (and not in a good eccentric way) and cost too much, but are also impractical. I can’t think of any way to rock these that wouldn’t make the wearer look short and malnourished. Well, I guess if you’re trying to look thinner, these might do the trick, but would you really want to risk having your style license revoked? I didn’t think so. Head over to TheFrisky for more!

Add A Light Layer To Your Summer Look With A Draped Vest

imageSometimes all those layers can get a little stuffy… especially during summer. But you don’t have to skip out on that draped and layered look when you’ve got a vest to hang on your shoulders. Add a hip piece that won’t keep you sweltering with a long vest that wraps your shoulders like a scarf. Paired with summer staples like shorts and tank tops, it’s a cute and comfortable alternative to your fitted button-up vests, but the look of a sleeveless cardigan sweater makes this vest a more casual layer. Some drape over like a curtain, lending a richer and more delicate style. These accessories will prove even more valuable on a chilly night, as well as into the fall season when you actually will need something to shelter your shoulders. Check out the long vests in this slideshow and treat your trendy self to an edgy, layered look!

Fall Trend Alert: Leather Jewelry!

imageThe upcoming fall fashion season will be heavy with rich textures and colors. Metallics, tweeds, and leather in all its forms–including jewelry. Jewelry? Leather accessories are mother’s milk for the style-conscious (thinking about how much leather I personally own between shoes, purses, and jackets alone likely places me in PETA’s crosshairs). Leather jewelry, however, is a niche in accessories that’s not often thought of much. Mostly, I think, because people tend to envision Bondage or Dude Ranch homages whenever you hear “leather choker” (er, not that there’s anything wrong with that!). However, there’s a lot of gorgeous leather tooling in jewelry going on at the moment, particularly within Nicole Richie’s House of Harlow 1960 line, which is quickly becoming one of my favorite accessories brands. I like what leather jewelry does for an outfit: it takes a fabric typically reserved for hard use and turns it into something delicate, not to mention the dimension of texture it immediately adds to any look. Added bonus: price points that are normally reasonable and within reach. Take a look at selections from Oscar de la Renta, Alberta Ferretti, and Anthropologie, among others, in my slideshow!

Our Favorite Beauty Products… From Seventh Grade!

imageWe were randomly surfing around Hot Topic the other day (What? Shut up.) when we stumbled across perhaps the greatest cosmetic product EVER MANUFACTURED: Twilight Edward Body Shimmer. OK, we’d make fun, but we were also young once. We also had crushes on fake boys, and we also slathered ourselves with some seriously frightening beauty products. (Hey, if they’d made Holden Caulfield Coconut Body Splash, we probably would have bought a case.) Let us take you back to seventh grade, when it was cool to smell like Dippity Do, cherry air freshener and Mall.

* White Eyeliner and Mascara
What did white eyeliner say, exactly? I’m being medicated for pinkeye? This Liquid Papr-for-eyes look was like typo correction… for your face.

*Urban Decay Eyeshadow
“ARGH! I’m so full of rage! I will express it by wearing makeup colors called ‘Dumpster’ and ‘Afterbirth’!” God, we were edgy.

10 Shoes That Won’t Kill Your Feet As You Trek Around Campus

imageWhere I went to school, you could always tell who the freshmen were because they foolishly showed up to the first day of class in heels. They may have looked cute (especially before they packed on the dreaded Freshman 15, ha!) but we upperclassmen knew that by the end of the day they’d be heading to the nearest Walgreens for a family-size pack of band-aids to patch up their abused feet. On a giant campus full of hills and stairs, I learned the hard way that flats were the way to go — and comfy ones at that. But just because I’ve had to leave my heels behind for the sake of blister-free soles doesn’t mean I dared to give up my sense of shoe-style. You can still stay fashionable in leather peep-toe booties and snazzy sneakers without requiring a first-aid kit by the time you get to class. Check out my favorite selection of back-to-school shoes in the slideshow!

Seventeen Mag Goes Retro For September Issue

imageOf all the high-fashion, high-concept, high-flying September magazine covers out there, this is our fave. Behold the first-ever cover of Seventeen magazine, from September 1944, which will also be the subscription cover of their upcoming September 2009 issue in honor of their 65th anniversary. We love that the cover model hasn’t changed: a young, pretty, all-American girl. But everything else has! Notice the single cover line? The first edition keeps it simple with “Young fashions & beauty, movies & music, ideas & people,” instead of the standard shtick you see on teen fashion magazines today (“284 ways to change your look” anyone?). The magazine was pretty cheap too, only $0.13. Today, it’s $2.99. Head over to TheFrisky for more fun fashion industry news.

Tote A Messenger Bag As Your Chic Fall Carry-All

imageEach year, usually right before fall, I get a hankering for a new handbag, regardless of how recently I purchased my last one. They’re just so fun to build outfits around and I hate to hinder my creativity, you know? Right now I’m all about messenger bags– I’m picturing one crafted out of buttery leather, maybe a tad distressed for that vintage look, and preferably in a neutral hue- chocolate brown, khaki, even dove grey would be lovely. The style is undeniably classic and yet alluring at the same time, and the brand is nowhere to be seen (with the exception of a small amount of indicative hardware, in some cases). Larger ones add a seriously urban element to business ensembles, while smaller types lend effortless appeal to androgynous and feminine styles alike. My personal favorite way to wear one of these schoolboy-esque satchels? Strapped across the body, over none other than a flouncy party dress. Click on the slideshow for the messenger bags on my wishlist!
