Cure Your Disco Fever With Metal Mesh Jewelry!

imageAs you’ve probably noticed, metal mesh (sometimes referred to as chainmail) can come across as tacky when adorning shoes or bags (you know, anything that’s not really meant to be made of metal, save for the few fashionable exceptions, like this Jill Stuart pouchette for example). However, the result is appropriately disco-chic, with just a dash of edginess, when used for jewelry! Go for a fancified take on Taylor Swift’s classic silver mesh earrings with these pearl-adorned ones from CoutureCandy, or glam up pretty much any basic tank or dress with this bandanna-inspired necklace from Jill Stuart. Or if you like just a quick flash of shine, Free People’s chainmail cuff adds some gold shimmer without blinging out your whole look. Sur la Plage

Szenfeld-1.jpg Szenfeld-2.jpg

Eschewing traditional tailoring techniques and materials, Bea Szenfeld’s creates the layered paillettes and sharply-creased geometric forms of her remarkable garments out of paper. In the Poland-born artist’s latest collection, “Sur la Plage,” currently on view at Stockholm’s Design Galleriet, Szenfeld mixes a range of inspirations. Fusing silhouettes from ’50s burlesque, her high-waisted, structured shapes enhance the feminine form with a vision of the future referencing tribalism, architecture and religious iconography.

The perfect foil for her fantastical compositions, stiff cardboard provides Szenfeld with incredible options for creating structure. “In the exhibition,” the press release reads, “one will see creations that resemble the oceanic demons of Jules Verne and mythical folklore of the sea.”

Szenfeld-3.jpg Szenfeld-4.jpg

Known for her savvy eye and keen ability to blend commercial with personal projects, over the past ten years Szenfeld has built a client list as extensive as it is diverse, having worked with Hello Kitty, Swarovski Crystal, Tommy Hilfiger and Stella McCartney, in addition to frequently lecturing around the globe.

Sur la Plage, a lesson in modern thinking and material reinvention, underlines not only a highly creative mind but also the importance of balancing artistic integrity with that all important bottom-line. See more images in the slide show below and catch the exhibition on view through 30 April 2010 at Design Galleriet.

Slicked Back Hair Done Right

imageIt’s amazing what a simple hair cut or style can do for your face shape or to change the feel of an ensemble. While some faces look better with a sweeping side part and others shine more with a simple mid-part, the most flattering look is to have no part at all! A coif that’s slicked back from the face is a sleek, modern look and leaves the wearer looking clean, dynamic and stylish. However, there is such thing as doing a slicked back style wrong. Does anyone remember Megan Fox’s crispy, greasy, over-gelled debacle at the MTV Music Awards? As hot as she is, even she couldn’t pull off that look. The trick to doing slicked back hair right is to choose a hair product that holds your tresses, but still leaves it flexible and natural looking. Another tip to help make this sleek ‘do work for you is to give it a bit of lift at the roots (but remember to avoid looking like Snooki) and give it some dimension. Want to try this look for yourself? Click on the slideshow to see some favorite hair styling mousses and waxes that add volume to your roots and holds your hair in place in a flattering way!

Spring Trenches For Lightweight Yet Stylish Coverage

imageAh, April. Aside from being known as dreaded tax season (thank God that’s over!), it’s also a time of unexpected in-between weather that seemingly can’t decide between leftover winter cold and premature heat waves. And then we have the April showers, of course. So instead of attempting to predict the unpredictable (my Macbook weather widget is almost as useless as Karen from “Mean Girls” when it comes to accurate forecasts) and either lugging a heavy coat around or risking freezing to death by bringing no jacket all, opt for a happy medium by rocking a spring trench! Think cropped versions, fresh prints, or lightweight linen — styles that still allow you to embrace the season at hand, but still provide practical coverage and warmth for when you need it! Take a look at the slideshow for my 10 favorite spring-friendly trench coats!

Label Love: Geek Out With Araks

imageRemember the opening scene in Lost in Translation where all you see is Scarlett Johansson’s bum clad with a pair of pink undies? Well, those undies were by New York based designer Araks Yeramyan who happens to have celebrity fans like Michelle Williams, Kirsten Dunst, and Sofia Coppola (natch). For a fairly new designer, her fashion background is quite impressive. Araks studied at Parsons and Central Saint Martins, interned with Marc Jacobs, and freelanced at J.Crew designing lingerie and swimwear. In 2000 she launched her own line of stylish lingerie and then debuted her clothing collection in 2006. I fell in love with her Spring 2010 line with menswear inspired pieces like double-breasted jackets, long cardigans and trousers. Whether you were a nerd or geek back in high school or not, the geek chic look is easy to pull off with any Araks piece. When people say “timeless” when talking about fashion, Araks is definitely on the shortlist. Take a look at my slideshow to see more.

Which Celeb Looks Best In Her One-Shoulder Dress?

imageThe first time the one-shoulder trend came back I was in high school, and let’s just say the old photos of me don’t exactly make me want to run to the racks and pick up one of the more recent takes on the trend. But I have to say, celebrities who have been rockin’ asymmetrical frocks on red carpets everywhere are starting to make me rethink my skepticism! Miley Cyrus put an edgy yet glamorous spin on the style with her black leather Thomas Wylde dress, while Kristen Bell glittered in a Monique Lhuillier mini with a gold hemline. Diane Kruger’s one-shoulder striped dress added interest with asymmetrical detailing at the hip as well, and Hilary Duff stepped up the drama in a tulle-draped Vera Wang dress. Vote below on whose one-shoulder sheath you like best! Photo Credit: PR Photos

Look Fantastic With Plastic Accessories!

imageWho needs diamonds and pearls when you’ve got plastic? While shiny jewels and gemstones will always have a place when it comes to jewelry, the new trend in accessories is plastic. Plastic is surprisingly versatile and can be used to make anything from fun, colorful pieces to pretty, classy ones. Plus, they add the finishing touches to an ensemble for a fraction of the price, which is good since my wallet has been looking more than a little flat lately. Click on the slideshow for a selection of versatile plastic accessories to dress up or down an ensemble!

Recession Chic: Flirty, Feminine Sundresses For Under $50!

imageAsk any hot-blooded, straight guy what his favorite thing about summer is, and you might be surprised to know it’s not BBQs and Ultimate Frisbee and not even baseball. Their favorite part of summer is all the girls in pretty, flirty sundresses. The thing about sundresses are that they show enough skin (since it’s for hotter weather and all), but the looser skirt and (usually) floral pattern make them feminine and cute as opposed to sultry and sensual. Day dresses are the perfect garment for a hot, sunny day and look equally good paired with flats or heels. They’re girly, flattering and can be very easy on the wallet too. Click on the slideshow to see my favorite sweetly sexy sundresses for $50 or less!
