Hot In The Hive: KIKKERLAND Knock Off Lamp

imageI recently went bowling with a group of friends and had a funny feeling that I’d get the lowest score of the night. It didn’t help that one friend had his very own custom bowling ball and another had a charming hop to his bowling technique. While I had a few spares, many of my attempts landed in the gutter. Not to worry! I still had a great time and actually scored better than I expected. So while I was scouring the web to look for a new table lamp today, I was surprised to find the KIKKERLAND Knock Off Lamp from Revolve. No it’s not that kind of a knock off. It’s because you won’t find an on/off switch on this lamp. Instead, standing it upright will turn it on and knocking it on its side will turn it off. Guess this is one time when you don’t want to be knocking pins down unless you want a pitch black room!

Price: $32

Blue Nails: Love It Or Loathe It?

imageA few years ago, we all fell hard for Chanel€™s black nail polish. Celebs started sporting this goth color and soon it spread faster than the H1N1 virus. But can they cause another nail craze again? Come summer, most of us turn to bright pinks, corals and reds when we head into the nail salon (if we head in at all); however, this summer may be different. Recently, there has been quite the stir in the nail salons across the country — stars such as Lauren Conrad, Whitney Port, Lindsay Lohan and Miley Cyrus have been encouraging the masses to sport blue nails! The colors have ranged from a dark navy to teal blue (a la little Miss Cyrus at last weekend€™s MTV Movie Awards), but the real question is, are you prepared to go blue this summer? Check out our friends over at WhatsWear for more up-to-date beauty and fashion trend alerts!

No Need To Slum In Sweats With Evenagamba

imageAs a big fan of designers such as Marni and Ter et Bantine, I’ve always wished that someone would take the deceptively simple cuts and understated artistry of both brands and apply it to casual sportswear. So it was kismet when, a few weeks ago, I was introduced to Evenagamba, a sublime line of sweatshirts by fashion industry veterans Juan Carlos Anglero and Henric Olsson. After stints at Chloe, Emporio Armani, Pamela Dennis, and Kate Spade, among others, the two friends paired up in 2007 to create this sumptuous casual line that represents the sum of their experiences through extensive travel, personal interests, and a love for fashion. Evenagamba takes its name from a Spanish slang term–“gamba”–for a fashion poser, or someone who follows the masses instead of developing their own personal style, something no one will accuse these pieces of lacking. I visited their showroom last week, where I viewed the line personally and was duly floored by both the quality of the pieces and commitment to social responsibility and activism the designers have incorporated into the brand. Each shirt is cut from the finest Pima cotton and comes in rich earth tones; Napa leather accents and seamlessly hidden iPod compartments give the collection a modern, edgy tone; and every piece includes eye-catching lining that is imprinted with a narrative and an image that highlights a current cultural issue. Juan Carlos and Henric are also committed to developing relationships with their suppliers, such as cotton growers in Peru, that extend beyond just a typical exchange of goods and services, and include initiatives to invest in the community as a whole. As Juan Carlos shared, “The lure of doing something for society was just as crucial as creating the line.” A stylish, refreshingly original line that “even a gamba” (wink, wink) would wear. Father’s Day Gifts For The Gourmet Foodie

imageFather’s Day may be on June 21, but it’s never too early to starting thinking about what to give him. Is he the kind of dad whose favorite room in the house is the kitchen? Does he like to try out new recipes or know exactly which wine to pair with each dish? Then forget the tie tacks or golf clubs, your foodie father would love something that would appeal to his gourmet taste. If he already has his dream grill and you can’t pry him out of the deck on nice days, then consider getting him a monogram steak brand and carving board that will have him feeling even prouder about his grilling abilities. And if he likes to kick back and enjoy a nice cold beer, maybe he should consider making his own beer with a homebrew kit. Check out my slideshow for more gift ideas for dads who like to enjoy the finer things in life.

Hot In The Hive: Division E Tees For Women

imageEver see candid photos of your favorite stylish celebs and wonder how they manage to look so effortlessly chic in something as simple as a slouchy white tee? The truth is, those handy white tees aren’t just your average Fruit of the Loom cotton shirt — in the case of starlets like Hilary Duff, Nicole Richie, Vanessa Hudgens, and Lindsay Lohan, they’re often donning the ultra-comfy variety courtesy of Hollywood favorite brand, Division E. Now with their first-ever women’s collection, the brand designs tops that are body-conscious and universally flattering while still maintaining that casual-cool feel. With both basic and not-so-basic designs (with added details like graphics, grommets, and other hardware), the tees range from plain and classic to rock ‘n roll and edgy, making them perfect for both dressing up and dressing down. Coquette Says Gimme Shoes!

imageWhen I lived near Hayes Valley in San Francisco, I used to get off the bus a few stops ahead just so I could wander down Hayes Street and browse around at one of my favorite shoe stores, Gimme Shoes. It was a little happy place for me to just be around all these beautiful shoes, even if I hadn’t exactly left room in the budget for an additional pair or two. I’m happy to report that they now have everything online so even if you aren’t in San Francisco, you can still shop their extensive and stylish collection! If you are in or around San Francisco, check out their two store locations — 416 Hayes Street and 2358 Fillmore Street — to see all the stunning shoes in person! Some of my current favorites are the Loeffler Randall bootie ($578), the Coclico peep-toes ($320), and these ruffled Rachel Comey open-toe heels ($310). When you’re finished browsing the covetable collection, click on over to Coquette for more splurge-worthy fashion finds!

L33T Jewelry for Gamer Girls!

imageI enjoy the Wii very much. It really is the future of gaming. My brother bought me the Nintendo DS for my birthday. I’d like to think that I am at least staying relatively current on new games and gaming consoles. I would never call myself a gamer – true gamers may try to hurt me with flying turtle shells – but I grew up with SEGA and Nintendo. I have a younger brother and a family on a budget so we had to share many toys. This led to a childhood bereft of Barbies and My Little Ponies and one full of uni-sex toys like Legos, boardgames, and eventually, video games. Wario and Waluigi, for as long as they’ve been around, are still considered “new” members of the Mario family in my mind! Now that I’m all grown-up, I can’t spend my days worrying about coins and mushrooms and evil nemeses. But, there is still that child inside that likes to make an appearance every so often. The best way for a little girl all grown up to show her gaming side? Jewelry, of course! Obviously, I’m not the only one with nostalgic childhood memories of Mario, Kirby and magic mushrooms! Check out the slide-show for a great variety of awesome, wearable gaming jewelry and accessories and let your inner child out!

Spend Time In Your Backyard Or Patio With New Outdoor Furniture

imageAfter a long and cold winter and spring quickly passing us by, it’s finally getting nice enough to spend more time outdoors! From lounging by the poolside to spending some serious time at the grill, nothing beats spending time in your very own backyard. But if you’ve recently discovered that your outdoor furniture didn’t survive the winter (cracked wood or rusted metal), then it’s high time to upgrade. I’ve also got some buying tips to make sure you get the most bang out of your buck. When buying metal furniture, look for labels that say they’re powder coated and rust resistant. For wood furniture, teak is best, but it’s also very expensive and slow growing. Instead, look for eucalyptus wood, which is sustainable and is water resistant. Who says outdoor furniture has to be hard and uncomfortable? I’d be happy sit on the Corsica Outdoor Oversized Chair all day long. In need for seating space and storage? Get the Chesapeake Bench Ice Chest which keeps all your drinks ice cold and the lid lowers into an extra seating space. Check out my slideshow for more outdoor furniture ideas. Just remember to store everything in a safe place in the winter so you don’t have to buy new outdoor furniture every year!

Enter To Win A Mini Minerals Make-up Set from Eve Organics!

imageIf there was a perfect make-up, it would be one that gave me the coverage that I needed but couldn’t feel. It would be made of all natural ingredients and improve my skin the more I used it. They use truly all-natural ingredients- no talc, no fragrances, no dyes, no sulfates- that actually improve and rejuvenate the skin the longer the product is used.
