Hot In The Hive: Umbra Biblioteca Bookshelf

imageSometimes, you never know when a serious case of design inspiration will hit you. Umbra Design Director Matt Carr is a great example of finding inspiration in an unlikely way. He found two vintage coffee tables, sawed them in half and stacked them on top of each other to make a bookshelf for his home. Luckily for us, we don’t have to break out the band saw and carve through grandma’s antique furniture to get the same look. (Well, you technically could, but the thought of possibly losing a limb is too terrifying). The Biblioteca Bookshelf reminds me a bit of something Salvador Dali would like. Though it is whimsical, it definitely has its uses. Now all your fashion books, guilty pleasure novels, and other knickknacks can all live in one place!

Price: $520

The Coveted Loves Mahtab Azimi’s Little Black Dress

imageEveryone needs a comfy little black dress in their wardrobe arsenal. This much I know… and I have quite a few in my closet to back it up! Yet, like black shoes, there never seems to be enough! When designer Mathab Azimi sent me this lovely Micah sheered tunic dress for a review, I just couldn’t be happier. The Micah dress is made with a poly-rayon blend which has kind of a jersey feel, only softer and with more movement.

The Pros: For $69.95 this dress is really well-made. The dress is very adjustable, with a tie belt and even the sleeves are customizable with ties, and can easily be worn with bows showing in the front or back. The length of the dress will adjust according to how much you pull up the top, and you can make it shorter in front, longer in back, mini or knee length. I really liked the gathering which gives it a nice Grecian effect.
The Cons: The only real gripe I have is that it’s dry clean only. If I had to pick something else, it would be that the flip side of adjustability also means that sometimes you need to adjust the dress during the day, but not much.

All in all, it’s a great dress and since it’s done by an independent designer, the price is more than reasonable. I definitely would recommend it! Check out The Coveted for more fashion reviews!

New Classics: Rose Gold Jewelry

imageWas it Kanye who claimed that he would keep your “neck stayin’ froze with that rose colored gold“? He’s known for setting new trends and foreshadowing the popularity of rose gold is one of them. Things that sparkle and shine are almost always a good thing in any woman’s book, and gold is no exception. In many cultures, gold not only symbolizes wealth and prosperity, but also luck, fertility and beauty. While there is no denying the value of gold and it’s beauty, it is a precious metal that has been around for generations. Rose gold is a new and gorgeous way to amp up this traditional jewelry look and add a kiss of sunset red to the mix, producing a never before seen luster and color that is really eye-catching. From simple chains to more elaborate pieces, rose gold is definitely the new precious metal to lust over! Check out the slideshow for stunning rose gold pieces you’ll want to see in your jewelry box!

Introducing: Olivia Harris by Gryson Handbags

imageWho wouldn’t love having a hand crafted, high-end Italian leather bag with awesome hardware and practical but cool silhouettes? I know I would! Gryson has been making those exact bags for a few years now and the only problem is that pesky $900+ price tag. Good thing she now has a sister line with more reasonable prices! The line Olivia Harris (named after her daughter) offers some of the same cool designs and buttery Italian leather for hundreds less. You can get her usual super-convenient large satchels and cool clutches, but my favorite has to be the small ball bag. It combines quirkiness (its small size) and practicality (its long strap). All the bags are priced between $225 to $575 and available at saksfifthavenue.com and piperlime.com. Check out the slideshow to see the styles!

Our Fave Style Bloggers Show Us Their Fall Must-Haves

imageAutumn is upon us — and so is poverty. So we’re being very choosy this year about how we’re updating our autumn wardrobes. Our favorite style bloggers get what we mean, and they’ve helpfully given us a list of their cold weather must-have items — the one or two pieces that they won’t be going without.

Kim of What Claudia Wore blog: “With me, it’s shoes — always shoes — and the taller the better. I was going to wax poetic about a pair of open-toed Frye booties that stole my heart. But then — speaking of impractical cut-outs, right? — I happened upon this blazer. No good would come of me owning it. Inevitably, it’d lead to a lot of outfits featuring tank tops. In October. In New England. Whatever — I must have it. I love unexpected details, those pieces that make people cock their head slightly and say, ‘Huh.’ I love those moments when it all comes together and you get that Holy Grail of personal style compliments: ‘Only you could wear that.'” Click on over to our friends at Lemondrop to keep reading!

Video Style Steal: Rihanna & Her Boys “Run This Town,” Street Warrior Style

imageAfter all the relationship drama and Hollywood hype she’s had to deal with in the past year, Rihanna is back — and she’s not coming quietly. In Jay-Z’s latest single “Run This Town,” also featuring Kanye West, RiRi makes it clear that she’s armed and ready for the spotlight, stronger and fiercer than ever. The politically-charged video was filmed in New York’s Fort Totten Park and depicts a chaotic mob revolt, representative of a more literal take on the song’s title. While an exact replication of Rihanna’s video get-ups may send more than a few quirked eyebrows your way, you can take her militia-style costumes as inspiration in perfecting your own look as a style soldier. She began working from the time Farr West was established in 1974, along with her parents and co-founders Jack and Iris Farr. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University in Fashion Design in 1974, she and her parents began their enterprise, and by 1979 Lindsey was the head designer and had her own Lindsey Roscoe label. Hot In The Hive: Fire Design Fire Extinguishers

imageIf you read up on the latest design blogs, you’ll quickly discover that no object or apparatus is safe from a design makeover- fire extinguishers included! A European company called Fire Design sells a totally unique line of- you guessed it- artsy fire extinguishers, proving that items once thought to serve strictly functional purposes can have some flair of their own. For about $138 apiece, you can have your choice of anything from a spotted cow print (my favorite!) to a taxicab yellow NYC theme. Don’t see one that strikes your fancy? Design your own here. If you’re simply looking for a way around the standard red extinguisher, or prefer one to compliment (and possibly save) your decor, you’ll find sleek chrome options too. We can’t guarantee that these fancy fire putter-outers are any more exciting (if that’s the word) to use than their more standard counterparts, but they’ll at least enhance your surroundings during their downtime!

Price: 65 EUR, or about $138 each
