The MyShell256 shoes by graduate designer Sharon Golan are each assembled from four parts, strapped to the wearer’s foot with silicon bands.

MyShell256 by Sharon Golan

The rigid thermoplastic pieces move independently as the foot flexes with no connecting bridge between the heel and ball of the foot, much like Julian Hakes’ Mojito Shoe.

MyShell256 by Sharon Golan

Golan developed the range while studying at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem – see more work by the academy’s graduates here.

MyShell256 by Sharon Golan

She plans to develop a range or jewellery and bags using the same concept.

Here are some more details from Sharon Golan:

‏My shoe collection originated from a minimalistic design concept, which at the same time allows for great variety.

‏The inspiration came from the terrestrial crust, which is shaped by internal pressure and stress- it cracks, swells, moves,
and responds to any changes, in the same way as the foot.

My set of shoes combines basic shapes, different techniques with industrial materials.

16 modular units are inspired by four models – parts of fruit peel, egg, earth, and shell.

These units are can be assembled using silicon-rubber bands, resulting in 256 different shaped shoes.

‏The project is accompanied by an interactive internet site (coming soon), showing the entire set of shoes.

Bobby vs. The Edgar

Upcoming éS video shows Skateboarder Bobby Worrest giving his new pro model shoe a proper beating

bobby-worrest-edgar.jpg

If a skate shoe can’t stand up to the pavement, it’s not a skate shoe. To prove the durability of Bobby Worrest’s latest pro model, The Edgar, éS will release a new full video showing how Worrest himself abused the shoes. The “Man vs. Shoe” battle spanned nine consecutive months of skating to “ensure that the shoes bearing his name were ones he thoroughly tested himself, the old fashioned way.” Eschewing the trend of investing millions in labs to test skateboarding products, éS brings it back to the basics with this wear test.

Leaving Worrest’s skating mainly to the imagination, the teaser builds hype around the upcoming full video and includes an effective time-lapse of the shoe’s wear pattern. Look to éS next Monday, 15 August 2011, to watch Worrest’s skateboard wizardry versus his freshly-designed shoe.

Pick up your own Edgars (available in blue, maroon, grey and black) through éS, starting around $60 a pop.

Jojo

A more transparent brand of social entrepreneurship showing you exactly how shoes change the world
jojo1.jpg

Jojo, an altruistic Belgian shoe brand, picks up where philanthropic companies like Toms leave off. Designed to look like a bandaged foot, for every pair of Jojo shoes purchased, they plant one tree or provide one person with a year of clean drinking water. But you don’t have to just take the company’s word for it; the enterprising young pair behind Jojo allow customers to track the progress of their contribution well after the point of purchase.

With a “choose, act, check” tagline, Jojo co-founder Matthieu Vaxelaire explains that the last step—following the progress of your contribution—is the most important part. In the future they envision shoes labeled with unique code that buyers can use to locate via GPS the well or tree they helped fund, “to really see their personal impact.”

jojo3.jpg

The passion that Vaxelaire, along with his friend and business partner Christoph Nagel, share for bettering the world shows in every aspect of the brand. The Jojo blog is filled with Instagram photos of current inventory and brainstorm sessions, outtakes from video campaigns (such as their inventive pigeon delivery video), business information and more.

While they set out to produce the shoes in Brazil (where they first conceived the idea), after four months of working with manufacturers, the twosome realized this was nearly impossible and almost gave up. Their tenacity led them to finding a producer in China, who now makes the shoes in a clean facility using fair work ethics.

They put that same undaunted enthusiasm into finding Tree Nation and The Water Project, the charitable organizations with which they partner. Vaxelaire explained the need for “reliable NGOs, because it takes months and months to find the right place to build a well and we needed to be with them on every step.”

jojo2.jpg

To help with the replanting of trees in Niger or the building of water pumps in Sierra Leone, purchase one of seven styles of Jojo shoes (€80 per pair). Simply choose the color, decide which project to support and then check in online to follow its development.

Recession Chic – Pointed Toe Flats for $50 or Less!

imageIt’s sad but true – summer is nearing it’s end. But cheer up, there’s a few weeks left and when the cooler seasons finally do roll around, we’ve got a whole new set of styles and trends to try!

One such trend that transitions perfectly from sunny days to breezy afternoons is the pointed toe flat. Pointy flats work well with a flirty, flared skirt and loose blouse and then look equally cute when paired with skinny jeans and an over-sized sweater.

Plus, the sharp tip elongates the leg and makes the overall look seem sleeker and much more chic that it’s rounded-toe counter parts. High end designer shoe brands are loving this new trend, but we’re loving the fact that you can find a cute pair for $50 or less!

Pressedleathershoe

Pressedleathershoe is made using a leather processing technique in which leather is soaked in water and pressed in between a two-part mould, forming it into a three-dimensional shape.

The leather parts are then dried, cut and assembled into one shoe, embedding the structure that gives the shoe it’s strength.

Lovers + Friends 2011 Shoe Collection

imageIf you want designer shoes that are completely off the beaten path, then check out the 2011 collection of Lovers + Friends.

This newly launched clothing line has completely taken the fashion world by storm in just the few months of its existence. Lovers + Friends presents fresh new ideas in designer shoes as well as apparel. Its creations have been stark successes even though they are a very new line and lack the financial clout of the bigger brands.

Their modest size perhaps adds to the charm of the brand. It is definitely worth looking into. Consider for example the excellent Chloe tan shoes. This is certainly one of the trendiest shoes of the season.

The upper body is made of leather and the style is completely different from what you may have seen so far. The one-inch platform is of rubber and there is a side-buckled strap. The stud accents add glamour to the whole thing, even though the mere design is more than enough.

Show RCA 2011: footwear designer Victoria Spruce presented these sculptural shoes at the Royal College of Art graduate show earlier this month.

The collection combines shiny plastic shells with traditional leather soles and matte-leather linings that are revealed as the uppers twist and fold.

Footwear by Victoria Spruce

Here’s some more information from Victoria Spruce:

The collection was originally inspired by organic, flowing sculptures, giving the idea that the object could consist of one flowing continuous line and material.

Footwear by Victoria Spruce

Through using hard materials and new technologies combined with traditional shoemaking materials and techniques an element of contrast is highly visible yet working together as one.

Footwear by Victoria Spruce

Emphasised by the use of tonal matte leathers to line the plastic and traditional leather soles, the contrast between the modern plastic look and the traditional aspects becomes even further evident.

Footwear by Victoria Spruce

The result is a combination of hard and soft, a contrast of matte vs. shine, and an unlikely pairing of modern technology and traditional techniques creating sculptural and fresh new footwear.
