Fang by Iris van Herpen and United Nude

Ten fangs protrude from the sole of each of these shoes, worn by models at the Spring/Summer 2012 show of fashion designer Iris van Herpen.

Fang by Iris van Herpen and United Nude

Created in collaboration with footwear brand United Nude, the wedge of each Fang shoe is moulded in carbon fibre and fibreglass.

Here are some more details from United Nude:

Among members of the fashion world, Iris van Herpen is known for pushing the boundaries of Haute Couture. On January 23rd she showed for the second time as an official guest of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris, and once again wowed the audience.

Fang by Iris van Herpen and United Nude

Models stepped out in “Fang” shoes with ten sharp teeth to each foot – the product of van Herpen’s fifth successful collaboration with United Nude. The shape of the wedge is so complex that each one consists of fiberglass and carbon fiber, made in a slow molding process. It is not yet certain whether these shoes will come to market as a limited edition, as was the case with previous Iris van Herpen x United Nude designs, but it is worth keeping an eye out for them.

Iris van Herpen

Iris van Herpen’s designs demonstrate fashion as art. Her creations are clear artistic statements through which women can express their unique character. It is no surprise that Bjork and Lady Gaga are part of her devoted clientele. Her current collection has been inspired by microscopic organisms. The garments are made with her own signature materials, fused with highly detailed craftsmanship and innovative techniques, such as 3D printing. Her style’s avant-garde spirit combines raw and technologically-produced materials, displaying her attraction to radical fabrics, such as leather, synthetic boat rigging, Plexiglas and the whalebones from children’s umbrellas. Her exceptional blends create a sculptured effect and have an astonishing visual impact.

Spring Summer 2012

The main colors of the 2012 Spring-Summer collection are light, specifically white and beige, while also dabbling in the darker areas of the spectrum, such as ray-grey, brown, copper, dark metal silver and aubergine. Alongside United Nude, Iris van Herpen also collaborated on this collection with designer Stephen Jones, artist Bart Hess, architect Isaie Bloch and graphic designer Tara Doughans.

United Nude

United Nude in 2003 launched its Möbius shoe, which has ever since been recognized as a design- classic. Founders Rem D Koolhaas and Galahad Clark thus became the leaders in architectural heels, their current footwear collection extending over 50 highly conceptual models. The United Nude story actually began with a broken heart. Rem’s attempt to get back the girl was made by downsizing architecture to its smallest and most vulnerable scale level, that of a woman’s foot. While most romantic notions often prove foolish, what was hatched through romantic inspira- tion was the ‘Möbius’. The girl was gone, but Rem knew the shoe would become a reality.

Enter: Galahad. The seventh generation of the quintessentially English shoe-making dynasty Clark’s. When Galahad first saw the ‘Möbius’ he was immediately convinced that a new brand had to be formed. United Nude. Evolving in an open way with direct recognition, United Nude has positioned itself at the intersection of design and fashion. Clarity, elegance and innovation being its hallmarks, the brand sells in over 40 countries with flagship stores in Amsterdam, London, New York and Shanghai.

The LunarGrand Wingtip

Innovation meets old-world style in Cole Haan’s unconventional take on the dress shoe

CH-LunarGrand-1.jpg

Jumping ahead of the current trends in men’s footwear, Cole Haan‘s LunarGrand wingtip is a classically designed full brogue dress shoe updated with an ergonomic outsole for unmatched comfort. Launching 10 February 2012, the LunarGrand has been “engineered to conquer the streets of New York City” by combining a classic design from one of the most recognizable names in formal footwear with innovative Lunarlon outsole from their parent company—Nike.

LunarGrand_Brown.jpg

While we love the striking design of a contrasting outsole, in the LunarGrand’s case it also serves a distinct purpose. The ultra-lightweight Lunarlon increases flex, movement and wearability—making the LunarGrand a great looking, super comfortable dress shoe alternative. I walked the show floor of CES for three days straight to test the LunarGrands and became an instant fan—never before have my feet felt so good at that beast of a trade show.

CH-LunarGrand-4.jpg

This marriage of a classic design aesthetic and contemporary tech was created with the nomadic city dwelling man in mind. Cole Haan’s VP of Design Phil Russo explains “the goal of the design process was to create a wingtip to take on the streets of New York City—a shoe that utilized motion-enhancing innovations at the same time as retaining its authentic and timeless aesthetic.”

CH-LunarGrand-2.jpg CH-LunarGrand-3.jpg

Because of their lightweight design and superior comfort we see the LunarGrand as the ideal travel shoe, as it looks just as good dressed up or down. And this is no coincidence, as Russo goes on to explain that the shoe concept came about from understanding “what people are doing in their shoes today, their expectations of style and demands of functionality,” pushing Russo and his design team to “create products that really do make a difference as people go about their everyday lives.”

For the time being the LunarGrand wingtip will be available exclusively at the Cole Haan SoHo store starting Friday, 10 February. All five colorways will be on hand retailing for $248.

Here’s some more text from Kobi Levi:

Bird Series

While standing in line to enter a museum in Holland, Kobi noticed a bird flying. This sight inspired him to incorporate the fascinating shapes and colors of bird into shoe design.

The research in this area proved so fruitful that Kobi was reluctant to choose only one bird, and decided to make a series of 3 designs.

The basic shape of the bird, which shows the upper as a body/wings and the heel as a beak, can be implemented to numerous birds, each with her own “styling”.

The Mallard duck, Toucan and Swan were chosen due to their unique color combinations and typical, recognizable shapes.

Red Wing Shoes Repair Service

A pair of well loved boots gets a much needed refresh at the century old workshop

Red-Wing-before.jpg

American made since 1905, Red Wing Shoe Company in Red Wing, Minnesota, has earned a worldwide following for their sturdy, durable boots built to last a lifetime. Not only do they make top notch (and increasingly fashionable) footwear, Red Wing firmly stands behind their product—offering repairs and modifications to anyone with a pair in need. This unprecedented service gives well worn boots the chance to be brought back to the original workshop to be rebuilt with original equipment.

Red-Wing-sanding.jpg Red-Wing-cutting.jpg

I’ve worn my boots for 13 years, and realized this fall that they were ready for a refresh. Although the leather uppers are absolutely in their prime, the years of wear and tear left the soles in a much sadder state. So, to give my beloved boots a little tlc and to get an inside look at the repair process, I sent them on a journey back to their Minnesota roots—with explicit instructions to keep as much well-earned character in the boots as possible.

Red-Wing-ready.jpg Red-Wing-new-sole.jpg

In the same fashion as the boots were originally made, the resoling process is done by hand—with the aid of a few heavy duty machines. After the worn sole is removed the remaining material is sanded smooth, exposing a bit of the original leather last and preparing the shoe for their new soles. A layer of glue is applied to both the new sole and the old boot and left to sit under a heat lamp for some time to cure. The two are then joined together and held under intense pressure until bonded. The excess sole is then trimmed down to the proper shape and given a brief washing before leaving the re-assembly line. The boots are boxed up along with a fresh new insole and two pairs of laces, black and tan, and sent back to the owner.

Red-Wing-finished.jpg

Lacing them up for the first time this season was like seeing an old friend. As comfortable as ever, with their well-earned patina and some welcome new support. The rejuvenation process had breathed new life into my old boots without permanently changing the feel or overall appearance, just as I wanted. Of course, if you want them all polished up they can do that too.

Red-Wing-studio.jpg

The repair process includes anything from resoling and restitching to changing eyelets or hooks and is available for any pair of well worn Red Wings for $95. The price includes shipping to and from the repair shop, replacement laces and a round of leather treatment and conditioning.

For more details on the repair and modification process visit Red Wing Shoe Company online. And for a closer look at my boots’ journey view the gallery below.

Repair It Yourself by Eugenia Morpurgo

Repair It Yourself

The Repair It Yourself project might be handy if the cobblers in your area have already gone out of business but it’s bad probably news for those who haven’t.

Repair It Yourself

See all our stories about shoes here.

Here are some more details from Eugenia Morpurgo:

I’m an italian designer just graduated at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Social Design master program.

Repair It Yourself

I’m sending you my graduation project: Repair It Yourself, a concept of shoes designed to be repaired.

Repair It Yourself

The activity of repairing is a form of re-appropriating control on our material world, allowing us to understand how things function and acting as a key tool for the consumer to control his post-consumption goods (waste).

Shoes are one of those products that, with the rise of consumerism and mass production, evolved drastically from a completely repairable object; and the active social-economical structure that existed around shoe repair is slowly disappearing. Shoes, both crafted and industrially manufactured, are almost always assembled through irreversible connections, stitching and/or gluing. This means that components such as the sole and the upper, although commonly made of two very different materials, are inseparable. Throughout use, shoes are worn and damaged both in the sole and in the upper.

Repair It Yourself

These shoes are designed with a reversible connection between the sole and the upper, allowing the repair process to be more transparent in relation to the material the individual component is made of. This project brings back in the hand of the consumers tools and knowledge for repairing.

The shoes come with a repair kit specifically designed for them, but which can also be used to repair other goods in the house.

Repair It Yourself was shown in the masters graduation galleries at the design academy Eindhoven during Dutch Design Week 2011.”
