Remembering Fukushima

The Unusual Chair by Japanese design firm h220430 is an expression of the current state of fragility the region is experiencing due to the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Though it has been 2 years since the disaster & things appear to be normal, the reality of the condition is far from it. The chair aims to reflect this abnormality in its missing leg, which viewers might overlook without closer examination. It’s a subtle & thoughtful reminder that the existence of danger is ever present despite our attempts to ignore it.

Fogo Island Furniture by Ineke Hans

Dutch designer Ineke Hans plays on traditional Canadian furniture as part of these collections for remote artists’ community Fogo Island (+ slideshow).

Hans has created two collections of wooden furniture for the recently built Fogo Island Inn and a seating range for public use on the island, built by local craftsmen.

The designer’s outdoor furniture consists of chunky wooden planks painted bright red and sits on the hotel’s roof terrace.

Seating for the interior of the inn includes a traditional rocker with tapered legs and a slanted recliner called Get Your Feet Up.

“From the start I thought, whatever I do has to fit the island, its history and its people,” Hans told Dezeen. “The way things used to be made there in the old days was playful and practical at the same time.”

The wooden furniture is painted in colours taken from existing Fogo Island interiors and textiles. “I wanted to design furniture that the makers would also feel proud of and connected to,” said the designer.

Hans has also designed public seating scattered around the island, referencing local wooden structures and fencing to form six benches connected together in a zig-zag shape.

Fogo Island Inn was designed by Norwegian architecture studio Saunders Architecture as a hotel and gallery on stilts.

The picturesque island is dotted with artists’ studios and cabins as part of an ongoing arts residency programme being established in Newfoundland – see a slideshow of them here.

Forget the Beanbag, Meet the Greenbag!

The PP Capsule is a distant relative of the beanbag chair that is composed entirely of post-consumer materials. The lightweight yet durable outer later is made with recycled polyester, the most sustainable synthetic fiber on the market. As for the inside, each capsule uses 4000 standard PP plastic bottle caps chopped into small pieces before filling the chair. Best of all, this eco-concious design can be produced by local enterprises, seamstresses, & craftsman by using 2 materials that are found worldwide!

Like Bread and Butter

Wood and steel just go together! The Composite Stool earns its name from the marriage of these two elements that form its simplistic yet stylish construction. Plasma cut 4mm mild steel is pressed into shape and powder coated to form the top, while sapele or silver beech wood is machined and assembled by hand to form the legs. The result is so sleek you’d never guess they were handmade in designer Andrew Cassels’ very own garage! Get em’ here!

I Heart Stooka

I am writing this article on the Stooka Chair, curled up in my hotel bed, from one of the trendiest boutique hotels of Singapore. The kinds that focuses only on chairs! It’s ironic that this hipster place has all kinds of seating options from eras gone by, but not one that boasts of being sustainable, multifunctional, portable, easy to store and more importantly eco-friendly. Perhaps I should talk to them about the Stooka.

Crafted as real furniture from corrugated cardboard, 50% recycled pulp and 100% recyclable, this fun chair has elements that can surprise you. For example, the packaging for the chair is a reusable tote bag. The idea behind this packaging is to avoid the use of plastic bags.

Another cool aspect is that you can customize and custom print on the chair. The chair supports 440 lbs / 200 kg and is for use at room temperature and average humidity conditions. I can see it fit very neatly in the upscale hotel, and I can also picture it being used at home, offices, picnics, and by college students as well.

Consciously packed in a reusable tote bag, Stooka was created with a mission to deliver something more than just chair. A product that would support our only true ecosystem: earth without destroying it. Compact and easy to store, just fold the chair and lies flat. Awesome!

AirChair

Inspired by the framework of the the very first experimental aircraft, the Air Chair’s triangular steel structure is at once reminiscent of flyers of the past and modernly minimal. Faceted planes compose the seat and back for an aerodynamic aesthetic that also excels in comfort. Even more interesting, every section of the design has also been proportioned to the “golden ratio” for aesthetic appeal.
