Hans J. Wegner’s CH88 chair put into production by Carl Hansen & Son

A wood and steel chair created by Danish Modernist designer Hans J. Wegner in 1955 has been put into production for the first time by furniture brand Carl Hansen & Son.

The CH88 was designed by Wegner almost 60 years ago and has been launched by Carl Hansen & Son to commemorate the one-hundredth anniversary of the designer’s birth.

A slim steam-moulded wooden back support has upturned ends for resting arms, combined with an oval wood seat and a tubular steel frame.

“Wegner was an unsurpassed master when it came to exploring the applications and compatibility of different materials,” said Carl Hansen & Son CEO Knud Erik Hansen.

“It is precisely the fusion of organic wood and industrial steel that produces a versatile chair suited to a range of different styles and settings.”

The CH88 was first unveiled as a prototype at the H55 Exhibition in Helsingborg, Sweden, in 1955.

Carl Hansen & Son slightly tweaked the proportions of the original design to accommodate users who are taller today. The company also altered the shape of the seat so the chairs can be stacked.

The design is available in beech and oak, in a range of coloured finishes, and the frame comes in stainless steel, powder-coated black or plated in chrome. On display at Stockholm Furniture Fair earlier this month, the CH88 chair is due to go on sale in May.

Carl Hansen & Son recently reverted to using the logo that Wegner designed for the brand in 1950.

This Stool’s No Stump

Metsä (Finnish for “forest”) is the result of two designers’ trip abroad to a little Finnish town called Lahti! Inspired by the area’s lush landscape, Metsä’s 9 legs create a geometric abstraction of a tree structure while giving it structural integrity. Composed entirely of raw birch, its aesthetic is the best of both natural and modern!

Milan design studio Skrivo has combined a steam-bent wooden frame with woven rattan material to create this angular chair.

Designed for Italian brand Miniforms, the Colony armchair by Skrivo has a seat and backrest formed from woven strips of dried vine using the traditional process called caning.

“Caning has always caught our eye,” said the designers. “It is functional, sustainable, resistant, lightweight and most importantly it reminds us of furnishings from the past.”

Sections of beech wood were steam-bent to create the rounded frame. Curved elements are joined to make a hexagonal shape around the outside of the chair.

More poles connected to the corners support the cane material, often referred to as rattan after the Southeast Asian plant it is sourced from.

A pair of bars is bent in two places and run from the front to the back of the seat, forming four legs.

The Anyway Sofa System by Chris Martin features elements with concave and convex bends of both 30 and 90 degrees, creating flexible arrangements that can fit into awkward spaces.

“I saw a need for a sofa that closely related to the space it found itself in,” said Martin. “The Anyway Sofa complements interior spaces, almost to the point where it becomes part of the architecture.”

The Elysia chair is the debut piece from Luca Nichetto‘s 50/50 range for De La Espada.

The frame of the chair consists of two parallel wooden legs that are joined by a wooden crib-like structure. This crib holds the padded upholstery and meets in two triangular points at the arms.

“The skeleton, traditionally hidden inside the upholstery, is deliberately exposed to showcase the craftsmanship and premium timber,” said Nichetto.

The Danish-oiled frame is made of either American black walnut or European ash and the upholstery is available in a range of fabrics, covering the harder outer shell and soft padded cushions inside.

“The project takes its name both from the concept of balancing skilfully hand-crafted wood with complementary materials at a ratio of 50/50,” said Nichetto. “From the idea of designing a collection that creates a whole environment in the spirit of the great architects of the 1950s.

Stefan Borselius‘ Tondo range for Fogia was exhibited at last week’s Stockholm Furniture Fair and consists of three designs, each a development of the one before.

“The aim was to make it classic yet playful, and preferably loved by all,” said Borselius. “The road to get there became a balancing act – intuition and emotion in interaction with craftsmanship and precision.”

The base design for all the chairs is formed by a simple cushioned seat and back. The next model up incorporates arms and the final design features a headrest.

All chairs come upholstered a range of colours, supported by either a dainty metal frame or rounded wooden legs.

“The chair’s thin metal legs makes it pretty and classic, while the rounded wooden legs have a more playful expression,” the designer said.

Other collections launched by Fogia at the fair include a series of small side tables and a sofa with a base that extends outwards to provide a surface for placing cups or books, both designed by Note Design Studio.

Färg & Blanche designs quilted Emily chair for Gärsnäs

Stockholm 2014: Swedish-French design duo Färg & Blanche has created a small padded chair for Swedish furniture brand Gärsnäs.

Färg & Blanche designed the Emily chair for dining or conference tables as a version of their larger Emma armchair, also produced by Gärsnäs.

“Emily is our Emma easy chair’s little sister,” said the designers. “The family likeness can be seen in the needlework – they are both upholstered but differently patterned.”

The chair back curves around the seat to form the arms. Padding is quilted into sections, creating a simple pattern on both sides of the back support. It comes upholstered in fabric or leather and solid ash legs poke out from short sleeves of material below the seat.

Industrial Elegance at Its Best

The Robert stool’s uses robust tubular steel in contrast with thin hand-carved wood to create an aesthetic that is at once industrial and elegant. The seat is curved for seamless comfort and displays a striking diagonal accent inlay. The base’s colorful powder coated finish emphasizes the toughness of the material, ensuring that users can be confident in the durability of the design.
