The artist’s latest print series blends graphite drawing with 3D digital sculpture

Haunting curvilinear forms dominate the work of Sougwen Chung, an artist with international roots and a flair for outspoken minimalism. Her most recent series—produced as a limited-edition print run for Ghostly International—portrays four natural phenomena with subtle coloration and high contrast. The individual members of “Étude Op. 2 No.1-4” take the names “Flight”, “High Tide”, “Cocoon” and “Bloom”, and lie somewhere between representation and theory. Viewed together, they communicate a congruent narrative and aesthetic in spite of their abstract form.

“The form and composition of each piece are informed by textures and elements within an original series of graphite drawings,” Chung tells CH when asked about the process. “Elements are deconstructed and then sculpted in a 3D digital environment. The final pieces are a result of a multi-disciplinary approach to improvisation and experimentation.” Ultimately, the blend of mediums and abilities brings about sci-fi worthy, otherworldly shapes.

A departure from her previous print series for Ghostly “Étude Op. 1”, “Op. 2” rejects the minimalist, hand-drawn look for “darker palettes and more iconic motifs.” “‘Op. 1’ was deliberately austere and minimal, celebrating pure form and visual rhythm in the way only black and white images can,” Chung explains. Both series showcase Chung’s talent for visual edginess and slick dynamism—which goes a long way towards explaining her commercial successes. If Chung’s look is minimalist, then it is a minimalism in crisis, full of movement, transition and graphic energy.

Analog creativity shows an old medium in a new form

Edited by Austin-based creative collective Public School, “Design: Paper” gathers together some of the medium’s more curious recent works, spanning the areas of identity, print, packaging, stationery and papercraft. The book explores the upside of the digital age’s encroachment on paper: tangible projects may be less frequently explored now, but because of this they are now more thoughtfully designed.

“Once used as a platform to hold a message, paper is now being used as the message,” writes Public School designer Cody Haltom in the book’s introduction. Filled with around 300 examples, the image-heavy book illustrates how several young practices are pioneering a relevant paper revolution, and how they envision its place in the future.

This isn’t just a wave of nostalgia, these designers are hoping to create works that are as forward-thinking as they are long-lasting. Essays from FÖDA Creative Director Jett Butler, Kelli Anderson, RoAndCo founder Roanne Adams, Owen Gildersleeve and Because Studio‘s Loz Ives offer a sincere look at their penchant for the medium and how it relates to their design processes. For example, Adams, who regularly uses paper in her graphic design work, relays a few tips on mastering the art of selecting the best paper stock for the printing technique, while Gildersleeve, a talented papercraft artist, talks about the patience paper projects require, and finding beauty in the imperfections the analog format creates.

Alongside an extensive range of works culled from around the world, the book also takes a “Closer Look” at the distinct design process behind studios like Manuel, The Metric System, Bond Creative Agency, Foreign Policy and Chevychase, to name a few. The array of ways in which paper can effectively, and often very subtly, shape an alluring message are fascinating—from a simple business card to elaborate packaging.

Sight Unseen returns to the printed page with a limited edition publication championing the creative process

The brainchild of two former I.D. Magazine editors, Sight Unseen began as a Kickstarter project in 2009, shortly after the celebrated print outlet published its final issue. Armed with years of industry experience, Jill Singer and Monica Khemsurov tackled the online world with a distinct site focused on the creative process and what happens behind the scenes at design studios around the world.

Now, with the help of Karlsson’s Vodka Unfiltered project, Singer and Khemsurov return to the printed page with a limited edition book designed by NYC’s Studio Lin. The aptly titled “Paper View” includes 24 new features on a range of designers, including Roman and Williams, Anntian, Roanne Adams, Andy Rementer, Shin Okuda and more.

The duo smartly organized the book into four thematic sections revolving around what it’s like to be a maker. Beginning with “My Mom and Dad Are Artists”, the book continues the exploration of some of the universal truths behind creative thinking with the headings “I Studied X and Now I’m Doing Y”, “Material Obsession” and “Strange Ephemera”. Singer and Khemsurov expertly detail insights from their studio visits and combine valuable text with illustrative photos for a comprehensive overview of how each designer works.

In a one-page column called “8 Things”, a handful of designers candidly share what inspires them—Apartamento founder Nacho Alegre tells how he is humbled by the work of American photographer Alec Soth, PIN-UP Magazine editor Felix Burrichter declares his love for Lagunilla flea market in Mexico City, Mondo Cane‘s Patrick Parrish divulges Sweetwater I.P.A. as his favorite beer and Established & Sons‘ Sebastian Wrong states his obsession for open fireplaces, to name a few.

Limited to just 400 copies, “Paper View” is now available to order for $30. Those in NYC can celebrate the book launch at the design-led boutique Creatures of Comfort (also highlighted in the printed edition), where the Sight Unseen Shape Shop pop-up will open tonight, 9 April and run through 6 May 2012. The temporary store within a store is centered around all things geometric—from Bec Brittain‘s Penta-Hex bottle opener to pillow totems from Mociun and more.


Chip Kidd

Creating book jacket covers in a hilarious TED talk from the seasoned designer

One of our favorite talks from TED this year, Chip Kidd delivers a great message in a most relaxed and humorous way. The talk, just posted online, reminds us about the importance of print in the digital age: “Much is to be gained by e-books: ease, convenience, portability,” explains Kidd. “But something is definitely lost: tradition, a sensual experience, the comfort of thingy-ness, a little bit of humanity.”

Opening the session called, “The Design Studio,” co-curated by David Rockwell and Chee Pearlman, Kidd runs through his highly successful career at Alfred A. Knopff, from early efforts designing the jacket for Michael Crichton’s “Jurrassic Park” to Haruki Murakami’s most recent hit “1Q84”. Starting from the simple premise of giving a face to a mess of words, the challenge often breeds entertaining results. Kidd jokes about his work for David Sedaris’ “Naked”, saying, “For me, it was simply an excuse to design a book that you could literally take the pants off of.” The designer fully embraces the advantages of digital type, but understands that it has its limitations, most notably when it comes to the senses: “I am all for the iPad, but trust me—smelling it will get you nowhere!”
