Seeing spots: Colour TV

Wow! I don’t have a television but this commercial is making me think twice.. Love the song (‘Heartbeats‘ performed by Jose Gonzalez) and the colorful bouncy balls. Thanks to Kelsey for bringing it to my attention.

Summer Gig

Gossamer Albatross

For this upcoming summer, the midway point of my two years of graduate school, I’ll be working near Los Angeles at a company that is probably best known for designing and building the Gossamer Condor and the Gossamer Albatross (shown above). They are human-powered flight vehicles masterminded by the late, great Dr. Paul B. MacCready and made history by successfully completing a fully human-powered flight across the English Channel on June 12, 1979. They’re not doing human-powered flight anymore, but they are getting into some pretty amazing wind-power systems, solar vehicles (including solar flight vehicles), unmanned aerial systems, and electric vehicles and charging systems. Should be a good time!

Suitcase: Circus Violet

Here are my photos of the Circus Violet porcelain pieces in the Re-Use show at Manos. It looks like you will soon be able to purchase work from the show on the Manos website. (Don’t worry about the shipping of these delicate objects – Karin is an expert packer and she ships ceramics around the world.) I bought a bowl and the sugar holder. I’ll take some close-up photos of those in my home.

In my suitcase…

This vase is coming home with me, along with some very special pieces from Circus Violet. After admiring Karin’s ceramics online for years, I really enjoyed seeing her work in person and choosing my favourites.

Suitcase: the first of May

This afternoon we went to Overjarva Gard, a small farm outside of Stockholm that is home to Karin Eriksson‘s studio and her boutique, Manos. Camilla and Elisabeth are showing new work from Studio Violet in the Re-Used show. It was the perfect place to spend the first of May. I took plenty of photos of Manos and the show, but I’ll let Camilla and Elisabeth be the first to post their photos of the exhibition when they return home tomorrow. I’m putting together a video of their preparation for the show, so expect that in the next week or so.

It has been a real pleasure to meet my Swedish blog friends in person: Camilla, Elisabeth, Sandra and Karin are all as friendly, sincere and talented as you’d imagine from reading their blogs and viewing their pictures. I hope we can return their hospitality and convince them to visit Calgary!

Suitcase: Walpurgis night, Stockholm

To celebrate spring, on April 30 (Walpurgis Night) the Swedes light a very large bonfire and sing spring-themed carols. We enjoyed the festivities at Skansen, an open-air museum in Stockholm. It was exciting to shoot video at such an event and I look forward to creating a montage of the experience when I’m back home.
