Four Innovations in the 2012 Mercedes Benz SL

Smart wipers, a magic roof and bass-in-your face all housed in a lightweight aluminum frame

On a recent California tour with Mercedes-Benz I stopped by their Design Center in Carlsbad to preview the all new 2012 SL. At first glance the the completely redeveloped SL’s aesthetic is both pleasing to the eye and the touch. The superlative 500 sports a new V8 with 435 hp, 22 percent reduced fuel consumption and increased torque, but aside from the seductive power and sleek design the real story lies in the innovative details. From an all-aluminum bodyshell to fluid dispensing windshield wipers, the 2012 SL boasts improved vision, increased sound and reduced weight.

Interestingly enough the car’s least important piece of glass for driving—the sunroof—is the target of the new “Magic Sky Control.” The “vario-roof” switches from light to dark with the press of a button. The idea is the virtually transparent roof offers a top-down type of experience even in unfavorable weather conditions, while the dark state shades passengers and prevents the car’s interior from overheating in the sun (Magic Sky Control is pictured here on the SLK 55 AMG which also features this innovation). As a plus the magnesium roof frame has been upgraded to open or close in less than 20 seconds.

To achieve a more authentic sound experience, the new SL’s bass loudspeakers have been strategically integrated into the front footwells, rather than the doors. This innovation—what Mercades calls “bass in your face”—provides a clean, clear and less distorted bass unseen or heard in any open-top roadster before it. Not only does it provide an improved experience for the passengers but by minimizing sound leakage pedestrians outside won’t hear you coming from blocks away.

One of my favorites from the slew of innovations has to be the washer fluid dispensing windshield wipers. The intuitive design allows for windshield cleaning with the top down without getting a face full of washer fluid—solving one of the most annoying parts of driving a convertible. As the world’s first wipe/wash system of this sort, it works seamlessly as to never allow either a water jet nor fluid film to be seen during the process, thus leaving a clean surface without any distractions to the driver. To up the ante the blade—which has channels for both fluid and electricity—automatically adapts the season at hand, warming the water in the winter and delivering a greater amount of water in the season.

Taking the “SL”—sporty, lightweight—moniker seriously the total weight of the 2012 has been cut down by 110 kilograms by casting it entirely in aluminum. This solution not only reduces weight but improves strength due to fewer welded joints. What this means for the driving experience? More dynamism, agility, less fuel consumption and an all around smoother ride. The rigid aluminum frame is vacuum die-cast to improve strength and therefore achieves higher safety levels.

Vintage Mercedes Prototypes

Three old Benz concepts that we wish saw the light of day

As a recent guest at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, I fostered a new understanding and appreciation for the brand and its history. Inventors of the automobile, Daimler is constantly innovating and exploring new solutions for safety, comfort and performance. During the tour there were three prototypes that really caught my eye.

mercedes-prototypes-3.jpg

An evolution of the iconic 300 SL gullwing, this 1955 300 SLR hardtop was developed for the 1956 racing season, but was never used in competition. Fortunately for Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the company’s head of product testing, it became his daily commuter despite not even being street legal.

mercedes-prototypes-1.jpg

Originally presented at the 1969 Frankfurt International Motor Show, the C111 series was developed to test various innovations like alternative combustion engines and air conditioned cooling. This wedge-shaped gullwing model, from 1970, uses a center-mounted rotary-piston Wankel combustion engine instead of a traditional cylinder-based one and was reported to produce 370hp and a top speed of 180mph.

The Auto 2000 was developed in 1980 to test methodologies for reducing fuel consumption. While the focus of the research was comparing three different engine concepts (petrol, turbo-diesel and gas turbine), the brutalist-esque ’80s approach to aerodynamic design is particularly charming.

The New York International Auto Show 2011: Concept Cars

Six designs from the 2011 NY Auto Show we’d love to see in production

Concept cars serve two purposes: To create an allure and desire for a brand and to explore style and technology innovations that influence a maker’s range of cars in a more accessible time frame. Most of these cars had their debut at other recent shows, but all are alluring and insightful in how they will influence upcoming models.

saab.jpg

Saab’s PhoeniX combines a sleek sports body with a highly engineered, efficient propulsion system. The all-wheel drive hybrid sports a 200hp, 1.6-litre turbo engine to power the front wheels while the rear is powered by an electrically driven axle. Its sexy lines are an insight into design director Jason Castriota’s vision for the brand we’re all hoping makes its way into upcoming cars. It’s camera-driven rear view mirrors and super-slick butterfly doors provide an accessible yet futuristic feel.

VWBUS.jpg

It’s always exciting when a company reinvents a classic. Volkswagen revisits its iconic microbus model with their Bulli concept, a six-seater driven by an electric motor with a 186-mile range. Further enabling drivers to leverage their devices instead of being tied to a car’s tech, the infotainment system is driven by an iPad. VW says this flexible beauty is headed for production in 2014.

autoshow2011-lexus1.jpg

Striking lines and a sleek design come together in this nontraditional concept of the age-old touring sedan. The Lexus LF-Gh is probably the boldest hybrid of recent times. Designed for the low emission standards of the future and the style, performance and efficiency demands of today.

scion.jpg

Scion‘s FRS-8 is based on a platform that Toyota used for its recently introduced FT-86 II concept and that will power the rear-wheel drive Subaru Boxer when it goes into production in 2012. Scion’s take is our favorite, and one we’d love to see go into production.

cadillac.jpg

Designed specifically for city dwellers, Cadillac’s Urban concept seats four and is driven by a 1.0-liter three cylinder engine. The compact package and use of electric assist technology gets this vehicle an estimated 56mpg in the city, and despite its small size it comfortably surrounds you in Cadillac luxury.

One of the few cars unveiled at the show, the A-class concept maintains its Mercedes-Benz DNA and infuses it with a welcome youthful twist. In addition to its sporty and sleek design the car features a new turbocharged 4 cylinder engine, a dual clutch transmission, advanced collision protection and braking systems.

Mercedes Biome Concept
