Reader profile: Blackbird Letterpress

I recently received this nice image from Kathryn Hunter, proprietor of Blackbird Letterpress. She writes, “It is such a rewarding wait 4 times a year for the next issue. I have attached a pic of where like to read the latest issue. I live in Louisiana and we like to go out in the salt marsh way south, not quite to the actual gulf but almost. (Louisiana is bordered to the south by marsh before the gulf of mexico, though it is decreasing every minute) So I like to take Uppercase and sit outside, watch the birds fly overhead while I read cover to cover. Maybe with a cup of coffee, maybe a beer if it seems late enough to be proper. ;)”

Blackbird Letterpress will be debuting at the National Stationery Show this May. You can preview some of their cards, like this clever bear hug design, in their Etsy shop.

We wish Kathryn much success at the big show!

Call for Submissions: Draw your workspace

For the subscriber profiles in the upcoming issue, we’d love to see where you are creative — and how creative you are! Please draw, collage or otherwise illustrate your studio or workspace. Submit it along with a brief 150 word bio about yourself — include your full name, location and website url. Please note that this call is open to subscribers only.

Files should be at least 5″ wide at 300dpi and labelled with your last name. Please upload them here. Submit the bio as a text file via the dropbox or send it as an email to janine [at] uppercasemagazine [dot] com.

Submissions are due by May 17.

Space is limited, so we’ll publish the best ones in print. We’ll put together an online gallery to show all the submissions.

Flip through Five

UPPERCASE is a media sponsor at the upcoming agIdeas conference in Melbourne, Australia. Here’s an ad I made that will be shown during the conference.

Featured Stockist: The Curiosity Shoppe

Since we call ourselves “a magazine for the creative and curious” it is only fitting that the publication is available in San Francisco’s The Curiosity Shoppe (they also have Camilla’s book). This cool destination and online store is one of the many creative outlets of married dynamic duo Lauren and Derek.

For our second issue, sfgirlbybay blogger and regular UPPERCASE contributor Victoria Smith wrote and photographed a terrific article about this creative couple. I’ve posted the entire article as a free download: just click here!

Thanks, Lauren and Derek & The Curiosity Shoppe for your continued support of the magazine and our books!

Three Four Five… (six, seven, eight, nine)

It is great that new people are discovering UPPERCASE magazine everyday! We often get requests for back issues, but issues #1 and #2 are completely sold, sorry. We do have backissues of #3 and #4 available while supplies last. I’ve added a new option in the shop where you can order #3, #4 and the current #5 which will be mailed out now in one package AND a subscription for the next four issues. (You save a bit of money this way, too.)

Despite many requests, I can’t afford to reprint backissues — and reprinting a magazine does deny the ephemeral and “of a moment” nature of a magazine. So once the print version is sold out, that’s it for the physical version. I am considering making digital versions of soldout issues available either as downloads or perhaps reinterpreted for the iPad… Although UPPERCASE’s ethos is firmly rooted in the tactile world of print and paper (long live print!), I’m proud of our content and do think it deserves a wider audience. I’m also interested in the future of publishing and see potential with the iPad for certain kinds of content delivered to specific audiences.

What do you think? Would you want a digital download of out-of-print issues? What fee would you pay? Would you read UPPERCASE on an iPad? Would you be interested in a print and iPad subscription combo? Please leave your thoughts in the comments below. I’m curious!

Thanks, Faye + Co!

I love seeing readers’ photos of UPPERCASE magazine and books when they arrive to your homes. I’m always so honoured that people actually take the time to do this! This photo, above, is by Diane of Faye + Co.

Diane’s portfolio has some very strong invitation designs, like this steamship-themed wedding invitation suite. No doubt the finds in her Etsy shop, Vintage Suburbia, influence her vintage-inspired typography. Thanks, Diane!

UPPERCASE down under

Colin was lucky enough to be touring through New Zealand recently and look what he spotted in Mag Nation‘s Auckland location! Thanks for the picture, Colin!

I’ve sent a large batch of issue 5 to Mag Nation in Melbourne, Australia, via air freight, so those should arrive quite quickly. The magazine will be available at the onsite bookstore as part of the upcoming AG Ideas conference. “Each year in Melbourne, agIdeas presents 40 of the world’s creative leaders who share their insights with more than 10,500 designers, students and business leaders. agIdeas presents a series of events for designers who are seeking inspiration, for designers emerging in the industry to explore the possibilities of international careers in design and for companies looking to embrace design as an economic driver.” UPPERCASE is a media sponsor along with some other indie magazines.

Issue 5 is here!

Issue 5 has sprung! It is a gorgeous issue (thanks, Matte Stephens for the lovely cover) and is bursting with content and inspirations.

Personally, it was a significant issue for me: I had to get the entire thing edited and designed before the baby arrived! In fact, I received the proofs back from the printer on a Friday, reviewed them on Saturday and got the return shipment entered with fedex so that it was waiting in my mailbox for pickup after the weekend. Good thing I did, since Finley was born that Monday afternoon.

Thank you to Chris Young and the hard-working people at Printcrafters who do a great job printing the magazine each and everytime. It was nice to know that I could send it off and not have to worry.

Here are some snapshots of some favourite spreads.

Like with previous issues, there are always images up on the blog before anything will be arriving in your mailboxes. Please allow 2 weeks for Canadian/US subscriptions to arrive, 3-4 weeks for Europe and up to a month for orders going to Australia. Subscribe or renew today!

Please renew!

I’ve just sent out a second renewal notice to our inaugural subscribers. If you started with the very first issue, then issue 4, with the bird on the cover, was the last issue included in the initial subscription.

This is an important time for the magazine: our inaugural subscribers represent almost a quarter of all subscribers so it is really vital that people continue to support the magazine by renewing. I’m not sure what a typical renewal rate is for a magazine, but then our magazine isn’t typical! We’re hoping for as high a renewal rate as possible since the magazine is almost entirely funded by subscriptions. From this point on, asking for renewals will become a regular necessity, along with nurturing new subscribers. Beyond the pleasure of content gathering, design and working with our collaborators, there’s certainly lots to manage! (Thanks, Jenny, for your tremendous help.)

Part of the unique quality of UPPERCASE magazine is the open dialogue I have as editor/publisher/designer with our readers. Through this blog and your emails, I’m in direct contact with many subscribers and have gotten to know you through your blogs, flickr and messages of support. You offer so much inspiration, thank you!

I hope you are all equally inspired by our quarterly publishing efforts.

{We will send you renewal notices by email when your subscription is nearing an end, but you are more than welcome to renew your subscription anytime by clicking here. We’ll add four (or eight) more issues on to your current subscription.}

Thank you!!!
