Two sides of one solar-powered light clip

For the generations surrounding mine, there’s always going to be something magical about a digital product that requires only solar power to work. Because of this – and because the product we’re about to look at here is simply wonderful – it simply must be made. Or we hope it’ll be made: it’s the Clip•Holding the sunshine by a group working at the Shannxi University of Science and Technology, and it’s cute!

This conceptual design takes its physical form from the simple chip clip – or that’s what you might know it as. The larger area on one side of the clip is a solar panel that collects power throughout the day. On the other side you’ve got a touch switch and an LED light panel that shines rather brightly when you’ve made a tap. The energy is transferred from one side of the device to the other through some simple contacts that roll around the center clip contact.

Diamond Inspired Blender

Everyone knows that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, right? The Cullinan Diamond Blender aims to appeal to the feminine side with a raw diamond shape that definitely stands out from the archetype. To improve vorticity and consistency, the functional shape of the internal canister was adapted to the tendency of fluids to naturally keep a continuous momentum when stirred. Just don’t give it to your girlfriend when she’s expecting actual diamonds… you might just get slapped!

An ergonomic grip also makes it super easy to pour with a more natural and comfortable grip.

Five ways to stop food waste

Over the weeked, I watched The Big Waste, a Food Network program featuring some well known chefs like Bobby Flay. The chefs were challenged to make gourmet meals using food that was ready for the dumpster. In my work experience, I’ve noticed that food is often wasted in households where there is no meal planning or system for keeping track of food that has been purchased.

Food that is hidden or not stored in an organized way will languish in refrigerators and pantries because it’s difficult to see what you have. When this happens, you’ll likely go shopping for those items and increase your stash. Instead, consider using the five tips below to keep food from perishing or stop it from turning into clutter. You probably use one or more of these tips already, but when combined you’ll make better purchasing decisions and have a greater chance of consuming more of your food instead of throwing it away.

Meal plan

We’ve talked about this numerous times on Unclutterer, so I won’t go into detail. (A good place to start is with our article “Creating a weekly meal plan.”) Just remember that meal planning keeps you from asking “What’s for dinner?” because you know what is on the schedule. If coming up with meal plans is difficult for you because of time constraints, check out services like The Six O’Clock Scramble, which is a program we love so much we have become users and affiliates for it.

Always use a shopping list

Using a shopping list will keep you from making spur of the moment purchases. That’s not to say that you won’t ever try something new (and put it on your list), but when you buy things that you wouldn’t normally buy, you may forget about them, particularly if you make multiple impulse purchases. So, before your next shopping trip, create a list of things that you intend to purchase and stick to it.

Track your stash with an inventory list

An inventory list placed in a very visible area of your kitchen (or on your pantry door) will help you remember what you have so that you can avoid making duplicate purchases. Record each item along with the quantity on your list or use a dry erase board so that you can easily make updates — and don’t forget your leftovers. If you tend to buy the same items, save a digital copy so you can print it as needed. Check out the Pantry Staples List created by Real Simple if you’re having difficulty getting started.

Keep your pantry and refrigerator organized

To keep your food from getting lost in the refrigerator or pantry, group items by category (dairy, beverages, left overs) and place them in the same spot all the time. You’ll want make sure that you have access to your most reached for items and that they can be easily seen. Use containers (like the Clear Handled Storage Baskets) to keep your items organized.

Check food freshness with StillTasty.com

The website StillTasty.com can help you determine if certain foods are still good enough to eat. The site will also tell you the best spot in your refrigerator to store certain items. For example, to keep eggs and milk fresher longer, don’t store them in the refrigerator door as the temperature fluctuates each time the door is opened or closed. For a quick reference guide, check out Hella Wella’s infographic, How Long Food Really Lasts in the Fridge and sign up for food safety alerts from FoodSafety.gov to find out which foods have been recalled.

Weeble broom wobbles but it wont fall down

There’s a design for a broom and dustpan out there that brings the two together in a way that not only keeps them one unit, but keeps them sitting upright as well. While a standard broom and dustpan require you to stand them up against a wall or they’ll go horizontal, the “Roly-poly Cleaner” by designer Salih Berk Ilhan [UPDATED!] is able to sit up without assistance.

What you’re looking at here is the same composure of plastics you’d normally be working with using a broom and dustpan. The difference here is the click-in nature of the two, together sitting upright and ready for your usage. When it comes time to sweep, just pull them apart.

UPDATE: designer is Salih Berk Ilhan, not “HYELIN Lee” as previously noted. As sometimes happens in our line of work, designers works are not properly attributed – in this case, it is certainly Salih Berk Ilhan who created the Roly-poly Cleaner (aka the Roly-Poly Dustpan and Broom, aka the RoPo!) We hope that those of you who have quoted Yanko at a source will make a change reflecting this update. Thank you!

Designer: Salih Berk Ilhan

Playful Bakeware

The Flexy series of cake pans offer a unique twist on the generic round a square bakeware you can find in any grocery store. Mold each one to your liking for a more personal touch that will stand out from the rest. Designer Simon Michel states that the bakeware is composed of food-safe plastic, but that might need a lil tweaking considering the material’s low melting point. Other than that, it’s an interesting idea for designer-cooking at home!

Innovative Food Storage

The Pyrex brand has steadied itself as a leader in food storage, and the designers at Streng have developed the latest addition to the line to build on that heritage with a series of colorful and functional containers. The No-Leak Clear series is nothing short of innovative, featuring a new steam-release mechanism that allows the user to release steam without removing the lid entirely. It’s easier than ever to reduce pressure and cool food items without warping the container.

2 Seamless Kitchens by Karim

No, this isn’t the cockpit of the Starship Enterprise, but it is a space-age looking, futuristic vision of the modern kitchen that utilizes the extraordinary properties of HI-MACS acrylic stone. The smooth, 100% non-porous surface is ideal for use in the kitchen. Easy to clean, hygienic and extremely resistant to heat and chemicals, it’s especially suitable for food handling.

Kook Kitchen – The exclusive concept of this kitchen is distinguished by sinuous silhouettes and an entirely innovative ergonomic design, which was made possible due to the unique properties of HI-MACS which proved essential to facilitate the shape and functional requirements of the fab kitchen. The worktop used in the Kook model, which is more than 90 cm deep, allows an improved layout of the hob and sink zones, as well as making it more user-friendly. The starring role of the ambitious project by Karim Rashid, aside from the latest-generation acrylic stone, is light, with LEDs arranged underneath the worktop, which highlight the magenta coloured aluminium groove. There are also LEDs inside the wall unit which illuminate the edge of the glass, giving the kitchen a dramatic appearance.

Karan Kitchen – The concept of Karan on the other hand, is based on an island, with a tapered silhouette, which encourages conviviality. When not in use, the mixer tap and LED light withdraw into the worktop. The simple addition of a multi-purpose chopping board which fits over the sink creates a handy dining area. Soft curves continue on the kitchen’s wall-mounted unit. An opening with rounded edges provides a space for cooking and food preparation within the unit. Owing to the excellent thermoformability properties of HI-MACS®, which make it possible to form the material into an infinite range of shapes, and realise any designer’s dream. Aran Cucine was able to produce, thanks to Karim Rashid’s visionary idea, two exclusive concepts featuring a soft and fluid design, of extraordinary beauty, whilst still adhering to hygiene and production issues.

Are You Flexible To Grate?

The Flexita is a simple kitchen tool that makes food grating a whole lot easier. It transforms from two to three dimensions and is efficient to clean and store. It simply flattens when not in use and molds into a handy grip when needed. Crafted from harmonic steel, the metal that has a ‘memory’ and returns to its original flat shape after bending.

The handles and thin edge trim are made with polyethylene injected in a silicon mould, and these parts are recyclable. The steel is incredibly thin, at just 0.2 millimetres. The use of harmonic steel makes it possible to save 50% of the materials used for typical graters. The ease of washing the flat shape can also lead to water savings of up to 80% in comparison to typical graters. The minimal weight of the grater and its flat shape allows for efficient transportation.

Flexita is a 2012 red dot award: design concept winning entry.

Square Is Better

The Square Funnel is a redesign of the typical kitchen aid that is used to transfer and pour liquids in a small-mouthed bottle. A research done by the designers showed that round funnels took a longer time to drain the liquid. The square funnel increases the speed of the liquid draining into the bottle considerably and it prevents an overspill too. In layman’s terms, the physics involved allows the quadrate funnel to control the inequalities in the change of air pressure inside and outside the bottle; thus enabling a swift transfer of liquids.

Square Funnel is a 2012 red dot award: design concept winner.
