Scotch & Soda

scotch1

Scotch & Soda is a clothing line from Amsterdam sporting more than great clothing.

They’ve built a web experience that’s beautifully curated, very visual and user friendly. I particularly like the grab-and-drag navigation on the ‘collection’ page. Showing their product in real life situations tells a great brand story, being able the shuffle through them with ease makes it even better. Have a look for yourself here.

Cut & Paste 2010

The one-of-a-kind digital design tournament takes on ten global cities for its fifth-annual competition
CutandPaste_1.jpg

New age innovators John Fiorelli, Jamie Falkowki and Bill Irwin kick their fifth-annual design competition Cut & Paste off this Saturday, 2 October 2010, at New York City’s Webster Hall.

CutandPaste_2.jpg

With tour dates in ten different cities around the world this year—NYC, SF, LA, London, Berlin, Mexico City, Sao Paulo, Bangkok, Seoul and Tokyo—the tournament’s pitting of digital designers against each other in design categories of 2D, 3D and Motion Design in live onstage competitions is bigger than ever. Call to entries were open to the public, but are narrowed down to 16 final competitors chosen on their performance ability and portfolio strength. Each city tournament will consist of eight designers competing in 2D, four in 3D, and four in the Motion Design categories. Additionally, there will even be a category open to the public with “Audience Design Contests” that will allow non-competitors to create impromptu designs while feeling the pressure of the big stage.

Each city’s finalists from each design category will ultimately be pitted against other city finalists to compete for the Global Championship taking place in NYC in February 2011. At this final showdown, the global finalists will compete for a global prize that’s currently still in the works, but should be pretty major.

CutandPaste_4.jpg

Competitions are judged and curated by design specialists in each city such as Emily Baltz of Core 77, Eric Haze of Intherhaze and Dan Schwarz of Heyhush judging the NYC show, and Brian Chu of the 3rd Ward and Maxon curating it .

Each show is expected to be around three-hours long and—if previous years are any indication—is sure to provide an evening of creative suspense and fun. Check out Cut and Paste’s site for more information on the NY show including tickets which sell for $15 online, and $20 at the door. Doors for the show open at 5pm with a speaker series, continuing on to the design tournament from 8-10:30pm. The night winds up with a celeberatory after party at Gallery Bar nearby in the Lower East Side.

Shape the Hive

shape-the-hive2.jpg shape-the-hive3.jpg

An experiment in interactive digital collaboration, Shape The Hive invites people from around the world to create and submit individual artwork online that will be combined into a larger piece for an unexpected installation of enormous scale. The honeycomb-shaped project aims to connect artists by intentionally using the web—the very medium that often disconnects people—serving as both a platform for and reminder about the future of art.

Organized by L.A.-based interdisciplinary studios Kuro Interactive (the same crew behind the rap lyrics Valentine’s) and Vision Design Studio and sponsored by The Art Institute of California Orange County, Shape the Hive will award a MacBook Pro to the most “bitchin” pod as well as a $10,000 scholarship to The Art Institute.

Shape the Hive’s potential is infinite, depending on how many people collaborate. To be part of the community, submit a design or vote for your favorite pod.

Made Labs

madedotcom2.jpg madedotcom3.jpg

The brainchild of young entrepreneur Ning Li, Made is a new website that crowdsources chairs, tables, shelves and other furniture designs.

In the Made Labs section, viewers can vote on their favorite designs. Made then puts the winning design into production, and then sells it online at a reasonable price—connecting buyers and passionate designers without the need for a brand to act as middleman.

By offering their audience a chance to invest in something they actually voted for, they become an integral part of the process from beginning to end. Also, cutting out the oft-difficult demands of corporate clients means the end result will more closely represent the public’s wants and needs.

madedotcom1.jpg

With LastMinute and MyDeco founder Brent Hoberman and Bebo co-founder Michael Birch on its board, the site has plenty of online expertise behind it. Hoberman explains, “From an investment trend perspective we see an exciting transition from retailing to ‘me-tailing’ where consumers are in control, influencing which designs make it into production and with a more direct connection to the factory. Made.com is good news for talented designers who struggle to achieve scale production as it will showcase the best new talent to the buying public and generate demand for their products.”

Swinxs Game Console

swinxs-last.jpg swinxs-2last.jpg

The first device for playing outdoors as well as inside, Swinxs provides hours of recreational use with lights and a built-in voice that explains games, recognizes players and serves as a referee.

swinx-1.jpg

Announced in 2008, launched in Europe last year, and now making its U.S. debut, the portable, screen-free device accommodates up to 10 players and features 26 games broken down into three categories—active, educational and adventurous. It includes classics like charades, hide-and-seek, and tag, along with new options such as Flyswatter, which sharpens fine motor skills, and Swinxsball, a mash-up of dodge ball and critical listening.

 swinxs-3.jpg

The games themselves encourage good old-fashioned fun and social interaction, while computer connectivity keeps things fresh and makes the accessory relevant to today’s wired youth. Kids can download more games (for free), exchange tips and experiences, and keep track of personal scores. With a pretty robust dev tool set, the brand clearly hopes that others will likewise start making new games. Interactive books (already available in Europe) will also soon come available once the rights get sorted out.

swinxs-2.jpg

Designed for ages four and above, Swinxs sells online for $150 and includes the console, four wristbands, a USB cable, an adapter and 10 pre-installed games. Check out the video for a full look at Swinxs’ many capabilities.
