According to Azure Magazine, it was announced this week that Office dA will be the lead firm in charge of The University of Toronto’s Faculty of Architecture’s re-design. Office dA has done some really interesting work lately, the plans for this new building are no exception.

Regular rechargeable batteries that can also be wound-up if there’s nowhere to plug them in. Most likely consumers wouldn’t want to use the crank option to fully charge them on-the-regular. However, these could be great for camping and other situations where electrical outlets are un-available.

ömer ünal

I grabbed this out of a section in this month’s Azure Magazine that highlights great design coming out of Istanbul. From the recently disbanded ünal&böler, ömer ünal designed these book and wine hangs called Sek. It’s an interesting concept, one that he seems to have explored in a few of his other projects (salkım, nar, petek, and sema), all of which approach book storage in an interesting and unique way. Plus, I’m a big fan of the photo.

Cooka – “placemat stove” by Maurizio Maiorana

I wish I had one of these when I was in university, what a wonderful idea – to be able to have a lightweight, portable stove for whenever you need it.  Or imagine having an oven in your kitchen, with no permanent stovetop – just coveted counterspace everywhere – you just plop out your placemat stovetop whenever/wherever you need it. The Cooka placemat stove is created of non-toxic LSR (Liquid Silicon Rubber) that you can roll up and stow away easily. The cooking plates heat up/cool down rapidly with silver thermal conduction.

An incredibly smart reinvention of wall outlets by this Vancouver industrial designer and architect. He’s streamlined these outlets in such a way that makes you wonder why on earth we ever used the old ones. Have a look at his website here. Also, an interesting interview with Ego Design here.

A classic project from Naoto. The set also included a kiwi and strawberry version, all really great stuff.

Korean designer’s interpretation of a record player. A red ball travels around the record, equipped with a small needle and speaker, playing music as it goes. Nice website too.

Ron Arad in NYC

In addition to his exhibit at the MoMA, Arad will now also be honored at the Moroso headquarters in New York. He’s produced some iconic furniture over the years, as well as a number of incredibly fluid architectural pieces (I particularly like his Design Museum in Holon Israel). Check out more work on the Ron Arad Associates website.

Philly Debuts “Big Belly” Trash Compactors

The City of Brotherly Love has cleaned up its act of late with the expansion of their recycling single stream initiative in March and most recently with the HUGE rollout of 500 high-tech trash compactors (Big Belly Solar).

Streets Commissioner Clarena Tolson said the compactors, the last of which was installed this month, usually need to be emptied five times a week—as opposed to 19 times for a regular can. The change frees up 25 streets department employees, who are now filling vacancies on trucks that collect household recycling.

“We now can go all day,” Tolson said of the 32-gallon compactors, which can hold 150 to 200 gallons of trash.
