Four designers working in Paris to ’sublimate the ordinary’ with ‘humor and simplicity’…

The first project I’ve included, ‘Rangement Maslow’, should ring a bell for anyone who’s ever taken a first year psych class. Inspired by Maslow’s hierarchy, this piece is designed to accommodate the varying sizes of our storage needs. The drawers can be moved into any configuration, making it totally customizable. The simplicity of it’s execution is wonderful, the streamlined structures that result from different drawer variations make this piece playfully unique.

The second project is called ‘3 Sets’, designed for Roland Garros’ annual tournament. Below is one of the stools being corded by Laurent Lucas, followed by the full set (showing the ball-tube-inspired decanter and scoreboard). The stools are a brilliant concept, I wonder how comfortable they are?

YaelMer&ShayAlkalay

London based design duo that’s been attracting lots of attention. ‘Stack’ (above) is a chest of drawers without the chest, part of MoMA’s permanent collection.

Both graduates from the Royal College of Art in 06, Yael focuses on sheet materials that can be transformed into three dimensional objects, while Shay plays with how things move, function, and react. I find the later influences particularly interesting, evident in the ‘Stack’ as well as the following (’Pivot’ and ‘Cut Attache’z’). Work from their studio ‘Raw-Edges‘ is produced by Established & Sons of Great Britain.

Very cool little camera — it’s digital, has an auxiliary power crank if the battery runs out, has a bunch of cool built-in lenses, and you build it yourself. Find out more about the camera and the project developed by Shree Nayar and graduate students at Columbia University. Check it out.

I.D. Magazine, 1954–2009

Ralph Caplan, former editor-in-chief of I.D. magazine sheds light and reflects on the 55 years of the magazine in an article for the AIGA. The January issue will be the last printed version of the magazine and will be missed. To read the entire piece go here.

From AIGA article:
…I.D. got off to a better start in life than any child has a right to expect. My impression—and it is only that—is that the magazine went through a difficult middle period, when both it and the professions it served were unstable, unsure and unsurely perceived. There were the usual weight problems, acne, confusion about identity, uneven growth and flashes of brilliance. During that period I sometimes felt pangs of disappointment, even going so far as to ask, “Where did we go wrong?” My impression—only that—is that today the magazine has an enviable inner strength, self-confidence and direction. I don’t know that I have any right to take pride in that, but I do.

A paint-less concept from Ryan Harc (a new design firm as of earlier this year) who proposes no paint be used to save on various environmental costs. Plus, the embossing looks great.
