Hot in the Hive: Homo Sapiens Caveman Kitchen Tool

imageI like to cook. “Like” as in I watch Food Network and enjoy flipping through cookbooks (but only the ones with pictures) and am particularly inspired to whip things up when there is chocolate involved, or perhaps a dough I can repeatedly test (for quality control- I’m very thorough). Michael Pollan would disagree and say that what I actually like is food and not the process by which it is prepared. He would not be wrong. His recent cover story for The New York Times Magazine not only points out cooking’s transformation from obligation to fascination, but also the idea that cooking actually helped our ancestors evolve and develop a culture rather than merely grunting, gnawing, and chewing all the live long day. And so, in the spirit of getting back to those simpler times, I am seriously pondering this caveman kitchen tool from ThinkGeek. It grinds, grates, mashes, flattens, and even sharpens your knives, and the best part is that it’s not the least bit daunting, so you don’t have to worry about your tools being more sophisticated than you are. The other best part is that you can make noises like “oog” and “grog” as you pound your way to your next meal!

Hot In The Hive: Penguin Classics Illustrated By Ruben Toledo

imageFor the upcoming Fashion Week, you might not find me glued to the computer hitting the refresh button as the latest runway images come in. Instead, I’ll be curled up in my reading nook with a classic novel instead. (Just don’t tell my boss!) No worries, they are fashion related. Penguin Books is releasing three beloved classics, The Scarlet Letter, Wuthering Heights, and Pride and Prejudice all with brand new covers illustrated by artist Ruben Toledo. If his name sounds familiar, that’s because his wife Isabel designed the dress and coat First Lady Michelle Obama wore to the inauguration ceremony. Ruben is also a name in fashion with his illustrations that have appeared in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Interview just to name a few. The fashion makeovers for the new covers are just what we needed with Hester Prynne’s tangled letter A scorning her from society, Elizabeth Bennet rejecting Mr. Darcy, and a mysterious Heathcliff lurking in the back cover of Wuthering Heights. So who says literature and fashion don’t mix?

Hot In The Hive: Dominic Jones Jewelry

imageWith stars like Rihanna leading the gothic, punk style trend and edgy vampires popping up as sex symbols everywhere from Twilight to True Blood, it’s no surprise that designers have taken clothing and accessories to the next level. We’re seeing metallic studs and points and shiny materials like patent leather and finished georgettes as added details of choice. Reds, blacks and greys are the new backdrops and blood red lips and pale, pale complexions are gracing the runways. One designer to jump on the “sexy-vampire” band-wagon? Dominic Jones. Jones’ designs are right on with the current edgy, rocker, “don’t get too close or I’ll suck your blood” craze, but still makes it his own. Take his black and gold “fangs belt” for example. Black belts are nothing new, but the gold fangs meeting in the middle definitely make it different! The great thing about this belt is that you can wear it to amp up a simple sheath dress and add some attitude into your look, and then lend it to your crazy, over-the-top, super-trendy younger sister to wear over her slashed leggings and oversized tees.

Hot In The Hive: Spinning Bird Jewelry Stand

imageLet’s get something straight — I am not high maintenance. In fact, I could easily cut my getting ready time in half if I didn’t ever-so-frequently end up spending 20 or more minutes untangling my jewelry from the heaping pile sitting atop my dresser. No matter how often I try to keep my accessories free and separated for easy access, there’s just some freaky inanimate mutual attraction that forces all necklaces and earrings and bracelets and chains to magically knot themselves into an impossible tangled mass. The solution? A handy spinning jewelry stand, similar to those organized revolving earrings displays you see on countertops at the mall (but much cuter for your room, of course). This one is shaped like a birdcage and has plenty of holes to hang your earrings from and keep your studs, hoops, and chandeliers with their matching pair partner and away from potential tangles with other jewelry. I’d run out and buy one now if I wasn’t too busy looking for that other silver hoop of mine…

Hot In The Hive: Papersnake Has A Necklace For The Black Sheeps Out There!

imageWe live in a society that celebrates individualism and encourages people to be unique and think outside of the box. We strive to be different, and to set ourselves apart from the rest of society. What about those who never really fit in anywhere? Friends with everyone, but not really friends with anyone. Those whose ideas might be a little out there and their fashion a little “avant-garde”, and are generally beautiful and interesting people but just a little misunderstood? Allison Wells, jewelry designer at Papersnake, has designed a necklace for the “black sheep” out there who are a little strange and loving it a lot! Papersnake offers a “Black-Sheep Necklace” that features a flock of white sheep on a chain with a single black sheep dangling from the center. It’s the perfect accessory to show how wonderfully unique you are, or give it as a original gift to that special someone that you love but just don’t quite understand.
