Hot In The Hive: PS3 Slim

imageGood news, gamer girls. The Sony Playstation 3 has undergone a fabulous makeover. The PS3 Slim, available now for pre-order from various online retailers, is not only slimmer (and thus more space-saving and more portable), but cheaper and greener too, using 34% less power than the original model. I’m not sure if remodeling itself to more closely resemble the Wii will give it equally stellar sales as its skinny competitor cousin, but the lower price will be sure to send gamers to the store who were once thwarted by the intimidating price tag. While the system has reportedly been spotted at select Best Buy stores already (hmm, mysterious), it doesn’t officially hit the shelves until September 1st.

Hot In The Hive: Too Faced Lip Bronzer

imageJust because summer is drawing to a close, it doesn’t mean you need to ditch your fab summer glow and banish all your tan-enhancing products to their train-case storage. In fact, there’s one place that might have been neglected by your bronzing beach days — your lips! While the idea of a tan is certainly summery, the bronze-y shimmer of this Too Faced Lip Bronzer is completely fall festive. The tropical flavors and scents may have you nostalgic for poolside days of your recent past, but the three pretty golden-based shades and skin-soothing conditioners never go out of season! Plus, as a compulsive buyer of all lip gloss, especially shimmery versions of natural hues, I can’t help but be on board for this sun-kissed take on the nude lip!

Price: $17 each

Hot In The Hive: Undercover Laptop Sleeve

imageAs a sometimes-careless girl in her early 20s, I’ve had my share of laptop mishaps. Crashed hard drives, soda spilled on the keyboard, freak accident involving a burst rain pipe (most of those just weren’t my fault!) — name a computer-related tragedy and it’s likely I’ve experienced it. And since I’m far from wealthy enough to be able to afford a replacement laptop every time something goes terribly wrong, I’m not about to take my chances when it comes to my battle-weary notebook getting stolen. The solution? Make it look like a piece of junk with this Undercover Laptop Sleeve! Made to look like a crappy old envelope, the waterproof sleeve is actually quite heavy-duty in its protecting qualities with its tear-proof padding, yet its disguise is something thieves won’t even give a second look! Just make sure you don’t bring your incognito laptop with you to mailroom — accidentally shipping it off to China is one thing this sleeve can’t protect against.

Price: $29.79

Hot In The Hive: Bling Band Aids

imageWhile I’m not sure I’ll ever understand why rapper Nelly thought it was fashionable to wear a band aid on his face, there’s something about these Bling Band Aids that really floats my boat. I don’t know if it’s the Swarovski crystals, the variety of colors they come in, or the fact that they’re fairly reasonably priced considering their “bling” factor, but I just can’t help but think they’re pretty sweet. I’m not saying I’m going to start wearing them on my face (or anywhere for that matter) when I’m not even wounded, and I’m certainly not going to jump for joy every time I nick myself shaving and have an excuse to wear one, but the little sparkles have me sort of smitten. You have to admit, they’re a lot cuter than those Hello Kitty bandages from Target… and that’s saying a lot.

Price $12

Hot In The Hive: Matryoshka Measuring Cups

imageIf you happen to have a Ukrainian grandmother like I do, you may be able to relate to my childhood experience of having to kill seemingly endless durations of time at her house playing with her collection of silly Russian nesting dolls while she “babysat” me. Yeah, I was five, but I wasn’t easily amused enough to think that taking the little people apart and fitting them back inside of each other sufficed as a good time at Grandma’s. Although I was bored nearly to tears at the time, now that I’m technically an adult, I can’t help but be drawn to these cute Russian doll measuring cups, called M-Cups after their actual name, Matryoshka dolls. While the dolls themselves may be a completely functionless ode to the old country, when brought to the realm of cooking, they’re actually a brilliant idea in kitchenware organization and space-saving! Plus, with all my childhood practice, I could probably break a record with how quickly I’m able to stack them up and put them away after completing a well-measured recipe!

Hot In The Hive: Telephone Cord Watch

imageWhat time is it? Time to get a new watch — and possibly finally return some of those missed calls that have been piling up on your PDA. Unfortunately this “On The Other Line” Telephone Cord Watch from Uncommon Goods can’t help you make phone calls, but it is a cute throwback to the pre-wireless world of long-distance communication. Made from recycled telephone cords and adorned with a vintage phone key, the timepiece is fun, functional, and artsy-chic. Plus, the stretchy cord eliminates the need for add-on links and resizing to suit your wrist. And you gotta admit, you kind of missed absent-mindedly twirling the cord around while you chit-chatted your way to an outrageous phone bill.

Hot In The Hive: Nail Airbrush Kit

imageDuring these tough times, it’s easy to feel guilty about spending money to get your nails done on a regular basis. Sure, you may consider manicures about as important as meals, but still — the costs add up. So when it comes to splurging on fancier polishes and treatments at the salon, say airbrushing for example, the costs add up even faster. Give your wallet a rest and opt for an at-home Nail Airbrush Kit! (Okay, so it’s kind of a splurge in the beginning, but you’d be saving money in the long-run!) The kit comes with a collection of colors and laser-cut designs so you can get the glamour of salon-done nails without needing to tip the chatty technician. Plus, you can polish while staying in your pajamas and spare yourself the judgmental looks from other customers!

Price: $180

Hot In The Hive: Ninja Star Coat Hooks

imageDoes your prissy Hello Kitty-adorned apartment need a little roughing up? If so, I’ve got the best thing to make your pad a whole lot more bad-ass: Ninja Star Coat Hooks. Made of super-strong nickel-plated alloy, the star is shaped to easily install into your wall and look as if you’ve survived a sneaky ninja attack right in your own home. See? Bad-ass. In fact, you’re so bad-ass that after you survived said attack and dispelled the ninja from your pad, you decided to make a mockery out of his misfired weapons and hang your coats from them! True, most of your guests will probably assume they’re just fun little decorations that you bought online (’cause you did) and ask where you got them, but they’ll secretly be afraid to mess with you from now on, just in case.

Hot In The Hive: Reminder Rug

imageIf I had a dollar for every time I’ve waltzed out of the house in the morning without my keys, wallet, or phone (or a tragic combination of all of the above), I’d probably have enough money to simply buy a replacement of whatever I forgot at home on the way out. Unfortunately, since there is no Forgetfulness Fairy to reward my flighty morning-rush behavior, I could use a little helpful reminder to make sure I have all my necessities before I dash out the door. Luckily, Urban Outfitters knows what’s up and came up with the brilliant Reminder Rug, designed to help start your mental checklist. It’s the perfect doormat (with nice, big lettering so your eyes can’t skip over it as you step), and even if you’ve never forgotten a thing in your life, it’s still pretty cute as a cheeky addition to your apartment decor!

Hot In The Hive: Vazu Foldable Vases

imageThe forever-old custom of giving flowers as gifts would be a whole lot easier if you didn’t have to worry about the glass vase not surviving the car ride over to the housewarming party you’re attending. Vases usually aren’t cheap, they break too easily, and they take up lots of precious storage room when you’re too busy to keep them full of fresh-picked flowers. Apparently the masterminds behind the Vazu Foldable Vase had the same frustrations regarding flower-giving. The Vazu vase comes flat in its package and expands to form a sturdy, free-standing vase that you can fill with water and put on display with your flower arrangement. When you’re finished, it re-folds easily back into its package for simple storage, and at only $4.99, you can afford to give it as part of a gift — no broken glass and no lending out your grandma’s old vase with the chance you’ll never get it back! It even comes in a ton of colorful patterns that can coordinate with any bouquet arrangement. Check out the selection at the Vazu site!
