Hot In The Hive: Umbra Biblioteca Bookshelf

imageSometimes, you never know when a serious case of design inspiration will hit you. Umbra Design Director Matt Carr is a great example of finding inspiration in an unlikely way. He found two vintage coffee tables, sawed them in half and stacked them on top of each other to make a bookshelf for his home. Luckily for us, we don’t have to break out the band saw and carve through grandma’s antique furniture to get the same look. (Well, you technically could, but the thought of possibly losing a limb is too terrifying). The Biblioteca Bookshelf reminds me a bit of something Salvador Dali would like. Though it is whimsical, it definitely has its uses. Now all your fashion books, guilty pleasure novels, and other knickknacks can all live in one place!

Hot In The Hive: Fire Design Fire Extinguishers

imageIf you read up on the latest design blogs, you’ll quickly discover that no object or apparatus is safe from a design makeover- fire extinguishers included! A European company called Fire Design sells a totally unique line of- you guessed it- artsy fire extinguishers, proving that items once thought to serve strictly functional purposes can have some flair of their own. For about $138 apiece, you can have your choice of anything from a spotted cow print (my favorite!) to a taxicab yellow NYC theme. Don’t see one that strikes your fancy? Design your own here. If you’re simply looking for a way around the standard red extinguisher, or prefer one to compliment (and possibly save) your decor, you’ll find sleek chrome options too. We can’t guarantee that these fancy fire putter-outers are any more exciting (if that’s the word) to use than their more standard counterparts, but they’ll at least enhance your surroundings during their downtime!

Price: 65 EUR, or about $138 each

Hot In The Hive: Rick Owens x Eastpak DRKSHDW Collection

imageLong ago, I resigned myself to the fact that I’d never own anything by Rick Owens. Leather jackets priced in the area of my rent just aren’t going to happen, even if they’re supposedly comfortable enough to live in. Not buying it, literally. So back when news broke of an upcoming Rick Owens/Eastpak collaboration, I was definitely curious, even though 1) I was more of a Jansport kid and 2) I have no use for a backpack. Fast forward to now, where the much anticipated bags are available on Oki-Ni. Consisting of sleek backpacks, computer sleeves, and duffels, the collection is pure minimalism, which is what you’d expect from bags designed by a label known for its high-end essentials. It’s all in the details- instead of traditional seams, the bags are produced with a revolutionary welding technology that gives them a luxurious, uninterrupted look and feel. Basically, we’re saying don’t drag these on the pavement or leave your lunch leftovers in them overnight…

Price: $113 to $292

Hot In The Hive: Jee Vice Heated Sunglasses In Orange Jubilee, As Seen On Sarah Jessica Parker

imageWhenever I try and shop for sunglasses, I always see the usual black or tortoiseshell frames. Yawn! And at the risk of getting unfriended by all my best girlfriends on Facebook, I’m actually not the biggest fan of Sex and the City. But that doesn’t mean I don’t look up to Carrie and the gang for some major fashion inspiration especially for sunglasses. So on Sarah Jessica Parker’s first day on the set back in her role as Carrie Bradshaw, she wore a fabulous purple tiered dress, some killer Louboutins, and orange shades. Whoa… orange shades? Leave it to the Sex and the City wardrobe department on finding a pair of orange sunglasses that look absolutely chic instead of looking like something my 7 year-old cousin would wear. Jee Vice has been around since 2003 making sunglasses the likes of Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek, Katherine Heigl, and Lindsay Lohan have all been seen wearing. So grab a pair of Jee Vice sunglasses and get ready to put your best face on for the paparazzi!

Hot In The Hive: It-Girls From “The Hills” & “90210” Love For Joseph’s Leather Jackets!

imageI’m convinced that I know more than anyone exactly how hard it is to find the perfect real leather moto jacket at a reasonable price. It seems like everyone else in the world already has one that they’re rocking on the street daily… so where’s mine? Well, thanks to fashionable LA girls like Audrina Patridge and Jessica Lowndes, proclaimed fans of playful French design team For Joseph, I may have find my perfect match… or two. Or four. With their variety of styles and details, from pocketed bombers to biker-chic exposed zippers, it’s hard to choose which of their trendy, celeb-approved options I’d want for my go-to jacket. And considering their reasonable price range, I probably wouldn’t have to pick just one (though that’s probably not a good idea). Check out the choices on the For Joseph site and be prepared to fall in love!

Hot In The Hive: Grass Charging Valet

imageDoes this scenario sound familiar? You rush out the door after frantically looking for your iPod and Blackberry every morning only to find out you forgot to charge them the night before so they both die halfway through your commute. Yup, I’m totally guilty of this and I’ve finally found a solution. The grass charging valet is less than $10 and keeps my electronic devices charging all in one place. Plus the “grass” looks super cute on my hallway bureau and much more useful than my other fake plants! It’s also a great addition to your office desk for a little bit of greenery and function if your devices ever run out of juice. Now you’ll always be connected so you can stalk your Facebook friends and listen to your favorite tunes. Your mornings are going to be a lot less frantic hunting for your phone, though I can’t say the same about your keys or finding that matching sock.

Price: $9.99

Hot In The Hive: Bodum Bistro Toaster

imageI don’t know if they’re just too busy browning our bagels to perfection to be concerned with looks, but it seems exceedingly rare to find aesthetically pleasing toasters. It’s even more unlikely that I’d spot a toaster I felt I just had to have based on cuteness alone! Until now, toasters seem to have been strictly business — pop in your toast, grab it when it pops back out, get on with your day — but the Bodum Bistro 2-slice Toaster isn’t only functional… it’s pretty darn spiffy too! With eight fun colors to choose from and a modern heat-resistant rubber exterior, it doesn’t just look pretty, either! The adjustable-width slots can fit all sorts of slices (no more cramming or jamming your huge slabs of bread) and the pull-out crumb tray makes for easy clean-up. I think I already have about 4 free toasters from various other appliance purchases, but this one is just so cute, it might be worth the splurge!

The mini-camera also comes equipped with a 2.5″ LCD screen, image stabilization, and an expandable memory slot for recording all your on-the-go antics if the allotted 10 hours doesn’t cut it for you! Hot In The Hive: Silk’n Laser Hair Removal System

imageWe all know that money doesn’t grow on trees. What does grow, and at a disappointingly too-quick rate at that, is unsightly body hair. You can shave and pluck and wax (ouch!) and groom all you want, but you know your precious hours of silky-smoothness are numbered. And nowadays, how many of us really have the luxury of making multiple visits for professional laser hair removal to banish the problem for good? Well, thanks to the Silk’n SensEpil, you can take matters into your own hands — and not armed with a razor and shaving cream this time. The portable at-home hair removal system offers treatment comparable to in-office laser removal sessions, and in 2-4 sessions is said to noticeably reduce body hair. The built-in sensor also ensures maximum safety by activating pulses only appropriate to your specific skin tone. Sure, its hefty price tag and the need to occasionally replace its cartridges doesn’t exactly make for the thriftiest option ever, but if you’re already considering investing in costly professional laser sessions, this product might just be worth a gander!

Price: $499
