Hot In The Hive: Ghost Corkscrew By Alessi

imageNot a day goes by without the Stylehive office busy exchanging links to the newest, cutest, and sometimes really ridiculous (like a $12,000 Balmain jumpsuit). But it’s no secret that we all love Alessi products and that our dream homes would be filled with gadgets made by the famed Italian design factory. Our latest find is the Ghost corkscrew designed by Alessandro Mendini. Perfect for Halloween, the ghost corkscrew is a limited edition piece and sure to be a conversation starter when you use this to open up all the bottles of libations at your upcoming Halloween party. In fact, I’d probably use this all year ’round for a bit of Halloween cheer all the time. There are other costumed characters such as a devil, angel, rock star, and king, but the ghost is the one that charmed our hearts!

Lighten Up! With Illuminated Furniture For Every Room

imageNeed to brighten up a room? Better than a lamp may just be a piece of illuminated furniture! As there are plenty of sconces, table lamps, ceiling and floor lamps to wade through in your quest for the perfect one, perhaps thinking outside the conventional lighting department could help. No, don’t rip down your curtains. Try instead a table with the glow of a lamp inside, but be warned– tracking down these fancy furnishings isn’t easy as they’re certainly a not on top of everyone’s list. They are, however, if you’re looking to transform your place into a posh pad. Illuminated furniture creates an ambiance unlike that of any spotlight. And, if your lighting concept involves your tabletops, the things that adorn them will see a new light of day. Click through the slideshow for a sample of some shiny surfaces!

Hot In The Hive: Kymera Magic Wand

imageIf you’re a Harry Potter fan and you’ve got multiple remote controls sitting on your coffee table (or lost in the crevices of your sofa) then here’s something right up your alley. The Kymera magic wand may look like a prop straight out of Hogwarts, but you can actually use it to create some magic of your own! It is a universal remote with an accelerometer inside, where you can program 13 different functions activated by gestures such as rotating, flicking, and tapping. Since you program the gestures yourself and an available practice mode, there’s no need to be Hermione Granger to get to the channel you want. That means you can put away all those remote controls and replace it with something totally fun, unique, and will mystify anyone who encounters it. It’s currently available for pre-order and ships October 1st, which means you’ll totally have it in time to impress your guests at your Halloween party!

Price: 49.95 GBP

Get Edgy With The Diesel Home Collection

imageDiesel may be best known for their fabulous jeans, but it looks like they expanding their empire into home decor too. In particular, their home textile collection caught my eye. From eye-catching sheets, studded towels (whoa), and not your grandma’s sofa covers, they definitely don’t like like something you bought from Martha Stewart! The clever tromp l’oeil prints are super realistic and give the illusion that the pillow are tufted, and the sheets appear rumpled. You may have to explain to your parents that you did make your bed when they visit and I’m having a hard time imagining how I’d use a studded towel to dry myself off… but hey, at least it all looks cool! I can imagine die hard Diesel fans, rock stars, and edgy home decorators like Kelly Wearstler gravitating towards this collection. Available in select Diesel stores and other boutiques, check out their collection in my slideshow!

Hot In The Hive: Social Media Throw Pillows

imageYou could say I’m on top of the whole social media trend. With Twitter, Facebook, Myspace and other sites, I’m always in the know about what my friends are doing, the latest insider sales, and celeb gossip (sometimes right from the source!). My laptop and iPhone are littered with apps that are supposed to streamline my time on the Web sites, but sometimes I still get overwhelmed. Sure I get stressed when Britney doesn’t personally reply to my tweet or I consider unfriending someone on Facebook, but at the end of the day, these Web sites are just for fun and we shouldn’t forget the power of face-to-face interactions. So when I need to relax I think I’ll reach for a social media pillow straight from Etsy user Craftsquatch! I know what you’re thinking: a social media pillow? They’re super fun handmade pillows with the logos of your favorite Web sites and even applications– like Photoshop! So the next time Facebook stops loading or the Twitter fail whale shows up, go ahead and hug your throw pillow and think of the days when they didn’t exist… but be sure to update your status once it’s back up!

Luxe Minimalism For Your Home On A Minimal Budget!

imageSimplicity in design is a hard thing to achieve. To show good taste and sophistication through minimalism and to have practical and beautiful styles that are sleek and not overwhelming are all characteristics of good design. Every time I see displays of furniture showrooms, or flip through home decor magazines, I always find myself drawn to the most simple and clutter-free layouts. There’s something modern, chic and comforting about the sleek lines and clean, spacious feel of a room designed in a minimalist manner. However, the prices for these pieces usually are so minimal. A house should be a home and you should decorate it the way you want, but not if that means buying the furniture is going to take the roof over your head away! I’ve found multiple pieces and home accessories that will give your living space the sleek, minimalist look you want, without your bank account falling into minimalist territory as well! Hot In The Hive: Film Roll Alarm Clock

imageImmersed in a digital age where Flip camcorders and iPhone cameras and Twitpic rule the world of picture-taking, it can be easy to lose touch with the retro photo technology of yore (or even of just a couple months ago). Celebrate the way things were with this Film Roll Alarm Clock. Perfect for the film buff or photography major (or for anyone who accidentally smashed their old alarm clock in a half-asleep AM rage), this roll of film won’t help you take any quality pictures, but it will help you wake up and get yourself to class on time! After all, considering the alarm clock is just about the most loathsome timepiece in existence, you might as well make the dreaded early-morning blaring more tolerable with a dose of cuteness!

Hot In The Hive: Hi-Fi Hi-Light

imageFrom eye shadow sticks that double as an eye liner to dresses that can be worn in multiple ways, I’m a total sucker for things that can multi-task. With limited space in my room (because it’s filled with clothes, of course!) I’ve got to make my decor count. Lately, I’ve been listening to my music through my dinky laptop speakers and when my desk lamp finally blew out, I had the perfect replacement in mind. The Hi-Fi Hi-Light from PB Teen is a desk lamp, a charging station for your iPod, as well as a speaker! Talk about getting more bang for your buck. While it’s great in my tiny room, this is also a good choice for an office or dorm room. With the desk space you saved by not getting a separate speaker system and desk lame, you now have more room for your accessories!

Hot In The Hive: Bin Bin Wastebasket

imageThey say beauty comes from within, so that’s why we try to eat fruits and vegetables, drink lots of water, and get a good night’s sleep every night. So it’s no wonder why our hair is naturally shiny, skin is glowing and eyes bright… right? Ok, maybe we could eat better to look better but that can wait after the frenzy of Fashion Week is over. In the meantime, I’ve decided to take a tiny break from all the fuss about the runway and thinking about my home instead. The Bin Bin Wastebasket is a perfect example of the inside contents looking like the outside! Like the crumpled rough drafts of your next Great American Novel or those pesky credit card bills, this wastebasket looks like a giant piece of crumpled paper. Put this in your office and everyone will know where to throw away the junk mail (instead of leaving it on your desk) or it could be a stylish umbrella catcher on a rainy day. The possibilities are endless with this unique design!

Retro School Supplies For The Flower Child In You!

imageGrowing up, I remember school supply shopping and positively begging my poor mother for folders adorned with Lisa Frank creatures, smiley faces, or other such nonsense. My mom would always shoot me down though, aiming for the classically primary-colored notebooks, folders, and pencils. Now that I’m older, I can see why, but it sure is fun to look at some of these retro-inspired school supplies! How cute would this brass pencil can look on a chic Parsons-style desktop? And I love these librarian-themed notebooks from etsy seller erinzam. And my baby brother who just headed off to college is going to love this Rubik’s cube alarm clock. Check out my slideshow for other great retro school supplies!
