Laser GPS In Broad Daylight

The Open Sight is a navigational aid for bicycles that imbibes a safer approach towards riding than traditional gadgets. The case point made by the designer is that we tend to get distracted while trying to find our way using a GPS Navigator. Hence accidents happen; to avoid this situation, the Open Sight GPS beams out powerful directional laser arrows that are visible even during the day. So basically you end up concentrating on your path rather than consulting the GPS interface for directions. The idea has some steam to it and with appropriate refinements I’m sure this can go on to become a good lifesaver!

Nikon Coolpix AW100

Take Nikon’s newest compact camera on an underwater adventure
aw100-front1.jpg

Nikon has not released a compact waterproof camera since stopping production of their popular Jacques Cousteau-approved Nikonos camera in 2001. Launching today for the consumer market is their answer to the modern adventure seeker’s needs—a durable, waterproof, freeze-proof and shockproof Coolpix camera called the AW100.

With an internal GPS system and full HD 1080p recording capability, the camera is ideal for documenting off-the-map escapades. The camera’s macro close-up mode is great for scuba diving, capturing intricate underwater fauna just one centimeter away with total precision, and its overall weight—6.3 ounces—makes it perfect for surfers who want to secure it in a zippered pocket while not in action or hikers concerned with every ounce of gear on their backs.

The Coolpix AW100 will sell for $380 in black, blue or orange from Nikon retailers worldwide.

This second part of our three-part camping series rounds up our top picks for improving any weekend backpacking trip into the wild. (Check out part one for car camping tips.)

garmin-1.jpg garmin-dog2.jpg

A faithful pup makes a worthy companion for bushwhacking, and Garmin’s new Astro 320 GPS dog tracking system lets old Fido run and explore with confidence. Every five seconds your dog’s collar transmits its position so you’ll know his exact location at all times. Plus the waterproof handheld set saves locations, downloads maps and even uses birds-eye satellite imagery. Look for this nifty device next Fall when it will sell for $650. Although it may seem a bit pricey, we see it as a small price to pay for the constant assurance of your best friend’s whereabouts.

Adapted from the traditional Chinese paper lantern, the new Hozuki Lantern by Snow Peak is both more durable and functional than its inspiration. Although all three brightness settings of the little light are great, we are especially intrigued by the candle mode. When initiated the LED light responds to sound and wind by flickering—pretty clever. Use either a few batteries or attach a mini USB cord to power the 100-lumen light. Small, lightweight and powerful, invest in one for your next excursion for $90 through Snow Peak online.

stanely-campcookset.jpg

For nearly 100 years Stanley has been keeping coffee hot with products as rugged as the outdoorsmen who chose them. Their Camp Cook Set comes with two insulated cups that fit inside a single, stainless steel cooking pot. Compact and efficient, it will cook up more powdered mashed potatoes than you’d ever want. Selling through Stanley’s online shop for $17, this product will be with you through many trips on the trail—they are “Built for Life” after all.

osprey-pack-bladder.jpg

The ingenious aluminum suspension system on Osprey’s Exos packs allow for air circulation between pack and back to keep you free of sweat. It’s just the right size for a weekend trek while remaining extremely lightweight, even after you attach your tent or sleeping bag using bottom straps. While you’re at it, toss in the new shape stable Hydraform Reservoir water bladder to avoid uncomfortable bulges when filled, or sagging when empty. They both sell online for $150 and $30, respectively.

NeoAir_Trekker_1_.jpg

The new NeoAir Trekker from Therm-a-rest packs down small and blows up big. Over 100 internal cells inflate to mimic the support of real mattresses. The American-made sleeping pad is durable and packable, plain and simple. Expect to pay between $100-150, depending on size, at dealers near you.

polar-tent-1.jpg

Weighing in at only four and a half pounds and condensing down to 6″ x 18″, Poler’s The Man Tent is just the right size for one person, with a bit of room to spare for some gear or a furry friend. The size and price make this tough tent a sensible addition to any trip on the trail. New to the market and the industry in general, Poler is also offering a free sleeping pad and shipping to sweeten the deal. Check out Poler’s web shop to grab one for your next mission for only $150. You can also score the Two Man Tent there for $50 more.

Pulse of the City

A day in the life of creating our site makes GPS art to celebrate the new Range Rover Evoque

Advertorial content:

Anticipating tonight’s NYC launch of the Range Rover Evoque it seems like the right time to share a video I’ve been working on as part of my involvement with the Pulse of the City campaign. While the larger program is an evolving, interactive guide to 10 cities, one component is the Pulse iPhone app that tracks your movement and converts it to a piece of digital art. This past January I used the app to track a day in New York visiting a bunch of different venues where I often find inspiration for the site.

BioLogic iPhone Bike Mount

bikemount1.jpg

Cyclists sick of juggling an iPhone while trying to ride will appreciate this waterproof iPhone case that easily attaches to any set of handlebars. Made by the sustainability-driven bike company Dahon, the BioLogic bike mount allows for tracking of speed, GPS, and distance, using apps like EveryTrail (free) or MotionX GPS ($3). The adjustable accessory also securely pivots the phone from portrait to landscape positions, an essential capability for those who want to take pictures or videos—a built-in membrane shields the lens.

The silicon liner keeps the phone in place, while a hard outer shell protects it from the elements. Safeguarded openings offer weatherproof support for headphones and charging cables too.

The BioLogic bike mount sells from Dahon for $60 or from Amazon.
