Stephen King Posters

tassone-petsem-1.jpg tassone-carrie-1.jpg

Providing a fresh take on Stephen King‘s classically twisted words and worlds, graphic designer Nick Tassone evokes the spirit of the disturbing films with a set of movie posters that perfectly illustrate each daunting plot.

Tassone cuts out the gore and reduces each image down to an essential stylized symbol, using a two-color palette of black paired with a pastel. For “Carrie,” an upended bucket hangs from a rope, while “Firestarter” and “Cat’s Eye” receive a literal treatment, showing a single large match and a wide cat’s eye. These condensed interpretations reinforce King’s ability to create intelligible stories, easily recognized even years after they were originally published.

Adding a layer of detail to play up a bygone tone, the vintage-inspired graphics include scratches and imperfections. The simplicity of Tassone’s design lends a familiar Hitchcockian dread and unease, making for an ultimately creepy yet visually-pleasing poster.

Pick up the Carrie poster and (soon) more for $30 from Tassone’s online shop.

The Sentimental Engine Slayer

This image has no alt text

Omar Rodriguez-Lopez from Mars Volta has released a new movie at International Film Festival Rotterdam.

“The Sentimental Engine Slayer tells the compelling, confounding tale of the overdue coming of age of a twenty-something misfit named Barlam. Barlam’s awkward transition from boy to man is as much the story of struggling to find one’s essence in a world of stereotypes as it is an indictment of the distorted reality of family life in the disengaged 21st century…” (IMDb). You can see the trailer and more of his work here.

Haven’t seen it yet, but looking forward to.

Muse Magazine

Sex and drugs(?) and smoking and trying to read a book in my Micky Mouse sweater and pouring water on the ground and Lindsay Lohan and falling asleep and getting drawn on and some disco ball I found and intense sexy music and more smoking, oh, and Channel stuff…

It’s not literally sex, but I suppose it sells. Another example of the fashion industry’s tight-rope walk along the ‘porn’ line (which I’m not necessarily against). The shoot was directed and photographed by Yu Tsai exclusively for Muse Magazine.

I admit, I kind of like it, but that just might be the partial nudity. After re-watching it I find it pretty hard to take seriously. I don’t know if it’s Lindsay Lohan, or that some of the stuff they’re doing doesn’t make any sense (ie no logical order of events, and some of the events themselves are pretty out of place). Apparently the shoot was inspired by Kate Moss and Johnny Depp’s romance in the early 90’s. Have a look for yourself.

WINDSOR! yea

It’s a micro-documentary coming out soon about Windsor (by Eric Boucher) and how everyone’s doing these days after the automotive market exploded…

Having grown up there, I can certainly attest to the moral as of late. Most of my closest friends that I grew up with have left the city, and I think everyone’s waiting to see what’s going to happen next. Looking forward to seeing the full film, it’ll be interesting to hear some more opinions on the matter.

Molho

This is a crop from an older issue of ‘boards magazine. It’s a really cool concept illustrated by Brazil based firm Molho. They seem to focus on motion graphics and film, which is evident in the way they approach their print work. More images after the jump.

A beautiful video done by Danish painter-turned-director for IKEA. They must have footed a pretty serious travel bill, shots from all over the world. You can watch it, along with some of his other work here.
