New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: Lorick

imageFormer model and current ghost designer for Gossip Girl’s Eleanor Waldorf, Abigail Lorick presented her Fall 2010 collection on Valentine’s Day morning and it was hard not to fall in love all over again with the Lorick Lady. Taking inspiration from the Prohibition Era, the 15 looks were ladylike without being prissy. The models took turns standing and sitting on a long platform while onlookers surveyed the sight. A recurring theme was the mix of silk spatter-printed blouses, skirts, or dresses with tweed outerwear. Bold statement jewelry by Subversive, metallic brocade, and lurex tights made for a shiny statement. One of my favorite looks was a gauzy overdress over a gold silk dress with a long tweed coat. All topped with fantasical and dramatic headpieces, the Lorick Lady is always ready to be the well-deserved center of attention. Hairstyles varied but every model’s hair was teased to give maximum volume. To complete the look, nails were a bright neon orange (aptly called Williamsburg by nail experts Dashing Diva) and doll-like makeup all done by the Temptu airbrush system. Take a look at my slideshow to see the looks!

Trends: Chunky statement jewelry, shiny tights, earth tones
Fabrics: Tweed, silk, brocade

New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: Jenni Kayne

imageLA-based designer Jenni Kayne proved with her Fall/Winter 2010 collection that you don’t need a parade of sequins and feathers to put on a stand-out show. Featuring a series of utility coats and riding pants, Kayne turned to her country girl roots to create a clearly equestrian-influenced look but with a modern Gossip Girl edge (sans the frilly bow headbands). While she mainly featured a muted color palette save for occasional pops of purple and saffron, she managed to give the collection a sophisticated city-girl feel with trendy updates like emphasized shoulders and fall-friendly ombre patterns. The carefully-constructed looks were given a more youthful “undone” vibe with the model’s soft waves and makeup that alternated between flushed cheeks and bright orange lips. View the slideshow for a selection of our favorite looks from the show!

Trends: riding pants and jackets, pleated skirts, ombre cardigans, muted colors, preppy tailored separates

New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: Academy Of Art University

imageIt’ll be hard not to gush during this review because it was my first show in the Tent (the largest of the venues at Bryant Park) and I also received the distinction of sitting in front row! Stylehive’s fashionable neighbor in San Francisco is the Academy of Art University which shows at New York Fashion Week every season to show off the most promising student collections. Six designers from Minnesota to Myanmar showed a varied and highly unique collection. I was impressed with Marina Solomatnikova’s working of suede which made it seem like a lighter material. Knitwear designer Bethany Meuleners combined ladylike fabrics like lace and mesh chiffon and combined them with black combat boots for a tough yet feminine woman. Naomi Sutton used burnout techniques to create prints you can see at one angle and disappears at another. Nicky An was inspired by the Mobius strip and her collection had clean classic pieces with added loops around the shoulders or on the whole garment. One of Steven Oo’s pieces that caught my eye was a knit sweater with dinosaur-like spikes on the back. Lastly, Sabah Mansoor Husain closed the show with outerwear made of felt that was embedded with sparking multi-colored crystals for an eye catching look. Overall, the Academy of Art show had one of the most creative collections at Bryant Park and I expect bright futures for all six designers.

Couldn’t Get In To The Marc Jacobs Fall 2010 Show? See It Here!

imageYesterday Marc Jacobs live-streamed his Fall 2010 fashion collection where he showed just why he is the fashion king. Gray played a major role, along with metallic silver and gold for evening, then yellow became the highlight in girly dresses. Faux bows on dresses (love that the bow theme is still strong), plus faux-fur trimmed coats and gray striped coats whisked down the runway as models clutched ever so delicate chain-strapped handbags while the song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” played for the entire show. Watch the full uncut fashion show above from Chic.tv.

New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: Caroline Seikaly

imageOn the 25th floor of the Bryant Park Hotel just overlooking the tents across the street, designer Caroline Seikaly presented 18 gorgeous looks that are perfect for any black tie event or red carpet. Her fall 2010 collection focused on lace and silk, creating an exceptionally ethereal collection. Thoughts of black and lace together may conjure up feelings of Morticia Addams, but Caroline was able to avoid the goth look with backless dresses with a tulle overlay, rose prints, and chic cocktail length dresses. The RiSD graduate cut her teeth in couture with Christian LaCroix before joining Karl Lagerfeld’s team for six years, and her experience shows with impeccable tailoring. It’s no wonder budding ingenue Hayden Panettiere wore a Caroline Seikaly creation to The Late Show with David Letterman last year! Take a peek at my slideshow to see the gowns.

New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: Malandrino

imageFrench-born New Yorker Catherine Malandrino presented her Fall 2010 collection, titled “Kahn,” to a packed house at the Chelsea Art Museum. While the title left clues to the nomadic culture of Genghis Khan and the Mongolian people, Malandrino was inspired by “a vision of the earth seen from above.” The extensive 37-piece collection featured animal print furs, chiffon, textured knits, and embossed leather which were all layered together. Many of the tops and trousers were oversized and baggy but maintained a feminine quality with leather wrap belts at the waist. Airy printed chiffon dresses contrasted with the heavy fur coats. The tribal influence extended into accessories with bell-adorned jewelry and leather fringed bags. The shoes were the most interesting as they were made with distressed leather and almost resembled hooves. The models’ hairstyles were all swept up in top knots, while cheekbones were accented with dark contours and dramatic eye makeup was applied in a cat eye shape. Take a look at my slideshow to see the looks from Malandrino at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week!

New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: Diane Von Furstenberg

imageAn exercise in restraint juxtaposed with a certain free-spirited glamour, Diane Von Furstenberg’s fall/winter 2010 collection at Bryant Park combined fall favorites like icy grays and rich texture with light, hopeful accents like rosettes and watercolor prints. Floaty dresses worn with structured jackets, chiffon pieces paired with thick cardigans, and a healthy dose of glitzy fabrics were as lust-worthy as they are wearable, and should inspire a lighter take on next winter’s weighty layers. Glossy waves and smoky, shimmer-lined eyes added ice queen-esque elegance to the collection. New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: Charlotte Ronson

imageA favorite of celebrities such as Gisele Bundchen, Nicole Richie, and Mischa Barton, Charlotte Ronson’s Fall 2010 collection for New York Fashion Week definitely speaks towards the ’70s vibe her loyal fans love. Long pleated skirts and dresses in colors from black to rust orange, velvet waist coats, and over the knee boots were reminiscent of bohemian vagabonds of the past. The collection had both long and loose-fitting clothing as well as cinched wrap coats and dresses. According to this collection, celestial prints are here to stay for at least another season. One of my favorite looks from the collection was a reworked classic: a black leather trench coat with a pleated shirt dress underneath. For hair, the models had loose waves that were covered with cotton turbans. Makeup was very minimal and easygoing with brown lined eyes and fresh pink pouts.

New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: Nicole Miller

imageNicole Miller described her Fall 2010 collection as “a woman’s strength.” Exemplified by leather motorcycle jackets, black beanies, and body conscious dresses, the Nicole Miller woman is strong yet aware of her femininity. A collection that mainly included separates that can be mixed and matched, some of my favorite looks were actually the dresses with abstract cityscape prints as well as graffiti prints. A statement piece I would be more than willing to invest in is the cropped wool vest with a shaggy Mongolian collar. As for hair and makeup, long curly hair flowed out of black beanies with grey smoky eyes, rosy cheeks, and berry stained lips that all evoked a tough girl vibe. Overall, it was a pretty much flawless and totally wearable collection. The only faux pas came from the show’s front row: “Gossip Girl” star Kelly Rutherford and Beth Stern sat next to each other and wore the same white Nicole Miller dress! Yikes. See the slideshow for our favorite looks from Nicole Miller at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.

The Budget Babe: L.A.M.B. FALL 2010 HAIR LOOKS BY DANILO

imageBackstage at L.A.M.B./Fall 2010, part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, I caught up with master hair stylist Danilo, who talked about the inspiration for the retro-glam hair looks in the show. The key products used to achieve the smooth, waved curls include Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream, Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray and Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray. Faux bangs finished the looks. Love how you can see designer Gwen Stefani’s very clear perspective expressed in the hair and makeup. And Danilo was too cool, he was very gracious, easy-going and more than happy to share his secrets with all of us! For more details, check out my coverage at StyleItOnline.com.
