Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM Runway: Zimmermann

imageAussie swimwear line Zimmermann is known for its consistently sizzling collections, and the latest looks to hit the Miami runway are certainly no exception. Skimpy cuts and look-at-me colors are tempered by ruffles and floral prints, perfect for retro-loving beach bunnies and jet-setting divas alike. It’s clear the days of swimwear shopping are no longer dominated by the decision between one-piece and bikini- Zimmerman’s swimwear walks the line with everything from lingerie-inspired tops to mesh-covered monokinis. The cover-ups were equally stunning, in tribal prints and dressing gown-inspired silhouettes in addition to the more traditional caftans. It would be impossible not to mention the accessories- while most of us expect to be drenched in sun and sand, Zimmermann’s models were drenched in chunky jewelry and layered necklaces- something I wouldn’t necessarily recommend for a beach day, but for strolling around the resort- or let’s be realistic, the living room- why not? Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week SWIM Runway: Diesel

imageWhen it comes to fashion, summer conjures up one thought and one thought only: swimwear! This year, Diesel came through with contrasting colors and daring silhouettes at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week swimwear runway shows, fittingly held in Miami. Always known for their industrialized and city chic style, Diesel presented a swimwear collection that was exciting, sexy and right on with their brand image. Classic black and white was made edgy and pop colors included vibrant, sensual red and icy-cold metallics. Besides the regular length board shorts, there were trunks that would be better classified as briefs, and not swimwear, in bright blues, shocking reds and funky patterns. Definitely for the confident beach-goer! Aside from the blazing bikinis and boxer brief trunks, Diesel also presented some casual beach coverings for those who want to show a little modesty. Models with football shoulder pads and sporty knee socks paraded down the catwalk, but it was the luxuriously laid-back look of shirts, pants and dresses that caught the eye. Simple silhouettes were made edgy with added details and interesting fabrics. The sack dress cover-up had a nonchalantly chic style that could work for evenings on the beach, or for a night out with some rocker-style accessories. Loose fitted tops and stark white skinny jeans gave the men an air of European sex appeal. A personal favorite off the Diesel swim runway? The overall-inspired, olive green one-piece, a totally original idea that’s sexy yet demure and would look amazing under a pair of white shorts! Sao Paolo Fashion Week’s Hottest Male Models, Just Because

imageSome girls have all the luck– and just this once, I was one of them. I just returned from Sao Paulo Fashion Week in Brazil where I got a chance to check out dozens of the country’s most amazing brands from international stars Alexandre Herchcovitch to local– and very campy– heroes like Dudu Bertholini, co-designer of Neon. As wonderful as the haute couture was, it didn’t hold a candle to the hot boys who modeled them. Some were blonds, others brunettes, others red heads– and all sexy. There really were too many to choose from, but I made the Herculean effort required to narrow it down to my top ten.

Academy Of Art University Runway: Womenswear Dares To Dress To Impress

imageLast Thursday, Stylehive went to San Francisco’s Academy of Art Graduation Fashion Show, where over forty graduating BFA and MFA students presented their designs to a packed audience. The show was anything but predictable with designers inspired by anything from demilitarization, shells, and children’s book Where the Wild Things Are. Some fashion design students and textile design students actually collaborated with each other to create some amazing pieces. Designers Eun Na Hwang and Lauren N. Herrera came together with romantic and vintage inspired floral prints with modern geometric and architectural shapes. Jewelry pieces were very avant-garde with delicate wire sculptures that looked like they were sprouting out of the model’s shoulders to metal flowers embellishing the front of a dress. I got to talk to a few designers at the reception before the show and many were eager to land a job after graduation or travel to Europe to learn more fashion design skills. Whatever they plan on doing, I expect nothing less than bright futures for all of them! Take a look at my slideshow for some of my favorite looks from the show. Photo credit: Randy Brooke

Academy Of Art University Runway: Scott McFarland Makes Knitwear For The Modern Man

imageScott McFarland uses his fine talents as a sculptor to mold yarn into some knitwear. For men. In light shades of pink. Before all you manly men grunt this off and go shotgun a beer, hear me out. McFarland has a distinct eye when it comes to fashion and knitwear design. His collection (which was also shown at New York Fashion Week in February) ingeniously contains knitwear inspired by Art Deco patterns, metal work, architecture and ’20s androgyny. The chunky knit coats and sweaters are infused with patterns of diamonds and three-dimensional texture that give each piece a whimsical personality. His vision is cohesive, but the experimental knitting techniques are discreet. Besides being a maestro with fine-quality yarn, McFarland created his own yarn by cutting lace fabric into strips and hand knitting them into heavier knits for his outsized coats. The color palette of pale pinks, grays and blues are soft, but the construction of the collection is very strong. In other words, it has the sensitivity for a woman and the swagger of a gentleman. With each piece you can’t help but be intrigued by McFarland’s knitwear. Any modern dapper gentleman would get pulled into this orbit and wouldn’t mind taking some of his brilliant pieces of clothing for a test drive. Backstage Beauty: Get the Clean and Dramatic Brian Reyes Makeup Look

Fashion Week may be over, but that doesn’t mean the beautiful makeup looks should be forgotten! I love going backstage to get the scoop on the makeup looks because usually, the products used are already available in stores, so while we have to wait for the clothes to hit the rack, we can recreate the beauty looks right now! To capture the soft, feminine styles and clean lines of the Brian Reyes Fall 2009 collection, makeup artist Nicolas Degennes for Givenchy Le Makeup created a fresh look with clean, matte skin and dramatic, captivating eyes. This presentation was actually the first time Givenchy was the featured makeup line for runway show. According to Nicolas, who also created the line, “This collaboration with Brian was appealing to me because his clothes capture the sophistication, modernity, and luxurious feeling of Le Makeup.” The makeup look was soft and feminine, with just the right dose of intensity and the best part is that it’s pretty easy to re-create on your own!

Get the Look:
Face: Keep the skin clean and matte using using Subli’Mine Fluid Foundation, $40 for a natural complexion (Note: PhotoPerfexion Fluid Foundation was the actual foundation used and will be available in April).
Cheeks: Dust Prisme Again! Blush, $40, in Smiling Brown onto the cheeks for neutral skin that has a bit of life to it.
Eyes: Heavily line the eyes with Magic Kajal Intense Eye Pencil, $21.50. Apply Shadow Show, $23, in Must-Have Beige and Khaki to the lids. To create a smoky effect, apply Shadow Show in Dressy Black on the crease. Finish with Phenomen’Eyes Mascara, $28, for dramatic lashes.
Lips: Keep the lips natural and simple with Rouge Interdit, $27 in Rose Desire a shade of pink that matches the natural color of the lips.

Get The Beautiful, Bare-Faced Abaete Makeup Look

I love going backstage before fashion shows to talk to hair stylists and makeup artists about the beauty looks they will be creating and to watch it all come together. For the Abaete Fall 2009 presentation, Beauty.com makeup artist Tina Turnbow created a very minimal, no-makeup look that had an old world masculinity meets modern day femme feel to it. The models’ complexions were polished and bare with little makeup, a glossy eyelid, washed out brows, and a pale lip. I got the chance to chat with Tina, who used Tarte cosmetics, before the show to get the scoop on exactly how to re-create this soft and subtle look.

Amsterdam International Fashion Week: Michael Barnaart van Bergen

Designer Michael Barnaart van Bergen released his first pret-a-porter collection at Amsterdam International Fashion Week “09 with a handbag line alongside his couture pieces. His ready-to-wear collection is just as sophisticated, luxurious and classy as his couture is known for. His collection is called “L’Hiver Brulant” and is inspired by elegant, ambitious woman with international flair. Barnaart van Bergen presented a classy look, in which femininity played a purest role. Refined fabrics, graphic compositions, expressive colours-mostly orange- and a clean silhouette underline his design signature. In January 2008, the Dutch fashion media was introduced to Michael Barnaart van Bergen, as he showed his first collection while participating at the C’est Brilliante show at AIFW. He had presented a couture collection made of paper, inspired by the perishableness of fashion, which granted him the status of highly promising talent. Numerous events and special projects followed, as the popularity of his designs was recognized by many. With his new collection, Barnaart van Bergen impressed the audience and received a huge applause followed by a standing ovation.

Amsterdam International Fashion Week: Monique Collignon

Monique Collignon is one of Holland’s top designers. She knows better than anyone how a woman likes to see herself: sexy and daring, yet also chic. Collignon is inspired by the young and sophisticated working girl with a rich social life. She has been producing a ready-to-wear line in addition to haute couture collections. This Autumn/Winter “09/’10 collection comes in 3 color themes and 60 styles. Daytime dresses that are also suitable after working hours-, elegant suits with skirts, trousers and stylish cocktail and evening dresses- as always this collection, which also has many tops, is ultimately feminine. The collection has a chic, young and relaxed feel, partly as a result of exciting blends of materials in petrol blue, magenta, olive and golden beige. It goes without saying that this unmistakably “Collignon” collection contains a great deal of black and white. Her design is the constant development of her ideas, impressions and emotions. Her inspiration can be found everywhere: street scenes, architecture, a good book, music, art, and travel experiences. During the creative process she first allows herself to be guided by her individual wishes, which are subsequently strengthened by playing with technical aspects and fabrics. The clientele she appeals to with her haute couture collections is comprised of confident, distinguished women- no trend followers, rather, women in their prime.

New York Fashion Week Fills The Shows’ Front Rows With Plenty Of Famous Faces!

Among the fashion elite who are actually granted access to the highly-exclusive Bryant Park tents are some of Hollywood’s most noted celebrities — after all, what kind of star would you be if you weren’t dressed by the best of the best in designer royalty? Some famous fashionistas like Kellie Pickler and Jessica Stroup couldn’t stay away from the glamour of the runway and were spotted warming up the front row seats of several designers’ shows, including Badgley Mischka, Pamella Roland, and Lela Rose; meanwhile, other more low-key VIPs saved their appearances for just their favorite style mavens, like Mickey Rourke for Domenico Vacca. While New York Fashion Week is ultimately about the clothing, many stylish starlets’ presences in the front row are inevitably photographed even more frequently than the designer threads themselves (oh, the price of fame), but most celeb attendees made sure they shared the spotlight and showed their support by arriving in their favorite pieces from the headlining label, like Brittany Snow in her gorgeous beaded Diane von Furstenberg dress. I know being famous must be exhausting, but I really can’t think of anything I wouldn’t give to switch places with one of those front-row ticket holders just for a day (preferably Herve Leger day, please), even if I had to be Paris Hilton. Check out the slideshow for more pictures of stylish superstars, both in the audience and backstage at some of New York Fashion Week’s hottest shows!
