New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Derek Lam

imageDerek Lam presented his bright and breezy spring 2010 collection on day four of New York Fashion Week. He used bold colors to stimulate the eye and kept silhouettes soft and clean, letting the bright hues take center stage. Bandanna-like neck adornments in contrasting colors gave his simple and laid-back luxe designs a feel of urban-cowboy edge. Derek Lam’s designs looked light and comfortable and very feminine with draped tops, fluid lines and high hemlines. Spring variations of current trends could be seen in the vividly hued turquoise and lime green one-pieces (are they risque rompers? A new take on swimsuits?) and the sweetly sophisticated floral garments. It seems like Lam is a little reluctant to let go of the sunny days of summer as many of his pieces had the models looking like a casually chic, retro-inspired women taking a stylish stroll on the beach or boardwalk and has me excited for the spring season! Check out the slideshow to see some favorites from Derek Lam’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection at the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week!

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Ports 1961

imageFor the Spring 2010 Ports 1961 collection, designer Tia Cibani found inspiration in the beauty of nature and as such, she presented an absolutely breathtaking collection. The color palette was mostly muted and comprised of soft airy shades, with the occasional pop of color thrown in, like the standout cherry organza layered sheath. To keep things on the clean and minimal side, embellishments were kept discreet, instead focusing heavily on construction and silhouette over anything else. Some of the pieces were very voluminous but in a way that was still wearable and not too overwhelming, while others were cinched at the waist for a sexier, more defined silhouette. The draping, tucking, and folding were so incredible, even someone with no knowledge of fashion whatsoever would be awed. Some of my absolute favorites included the talc marble wrap dress, a brushstroke silk satin sheath dress with a draped back (definitely a versatile piece which can be worn with a blazer for day and sexy shoes and lots of accessories for night),, and a muted tank dres that was so simple yet stunning. From the bustier cocktail frocks to the organza blazers to the draped skirts, each and every single piece in this collection was simply phenomenal. Flip through the slideshow to see some of the pieces in action.

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Michael Angel

imageAussie designer Michael Angel kicked off the Spring/Summer 2010 shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week with a parade of party dresses that provided a feast of color and exotic patterns for its audience. Known for his unique bright prints and innovative cut designs, the designer did not disappoint this season, despite the fact that his signature rainbow leggings were nowhere to be found. Accessorized with flat wrap sandals and bold stone earrings, the models romped the runway in flowing silk wrap dresses and cap-sleeved minis, clearly designed only for those aiming to show off a killer pair of long legs. One particular highlight included a patent leather jacket and silk floral miniskirt combo, reflective of the designer’s playful yet feminine take on modern womenswear. Check the slideshow for some highlights straight from the runway!

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: BCBG Max Azria

imageBCBGMAXAZRIA kicked off the start of New York Fashion Week with nothing but gorgeous dresses parading down the runway. The popular mini bandage dress made appearances in bright coral and rich purple with sheer insets. (I had to double check to make sure I wasn’t at Herve Leger!) Designer Max Azria played with colorblocking with solids and abstract prints which reminded me of a Jackson Pollock painting or crashing waves on the beach. I’m looking forward to seeing the loose t-shirt dresses and asymmetrical hems in-stores and on our favorite celebs. As a matter of fact, two dresses are already available for purchase on the BCBG website! The models carried small clutches with big tassels hanging off which is definitely one of the next must-have party bags. As for hair and beauty, all the models had their straight hair tucked behind their ears with fresh and natural looking makeup. Click on my slideshow to see my favorite looks from the runway!

Going To Fashion Week? Be Ready With Our Survival Kit!

imageThe New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010 shows are almost here! Before we jump head-first into runway reviews, model sightings, the clothes, and everything else that makes fashion week what it is, we thought we’d bring you a little survival kit to help you through what is sure to be an exciting week! Whether you’re from NYC or crashing on your cousin’s couch for the week, or there for work or just tagging along for a few shows, there are a few key items you’ll want to have on hand (and foot) to help you through the insanity.

Flip flops or flats. This sounds obvious but unless you plan on shelling out cab fare multiple times (or have a high pain threshold), you’ll want to have a pair of flip flops or flats on hand. Whatever you do, don’t wear your flip flops in the tents- switch them outside! One more blister is a trivial thing when there are aspiring street style photographers snapping shots right and left.

Camera. Again, obvious, but bring your charger or an extra battery. Camera dying mid-show = instant mood killer.

Food. Toss a baggie of almonds or dried fruit in your bag, because there isn’t much in the way of food in the tents (so surprising, I know). This will keep you from stalking the people handing out samples of LU biscuits, and making return trips to the M&M booth, and the other booth with the mini macarons, and… okay, clearly I have no shame when it comes to freebies.

Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Ontfront

imageInitially started in 2005 as a platform for young designers and artists, Ontfront didn’t take long to get swept up by the fashion scene. The line found its niche in a creative and functional fusion of urban streetwear and professionalism known as Sidewalk Tailoring. Nowadays, Ontfront is a statement and huge success within the Amsterdam fashion and club scene. National and international fashion-forward celebrities like Emmy Award nominated DJ Diplo and Musiq Soulchild are dressed in some of their designs. For the Spring/Summer 2010 collection that Ontfront showed at the Amsterdam International Fashion Week, they continued to impress with the theme “Tonight is the Knight,” which was evident by their brawny statures and iron gloves. The diverse collection was said to be inspired by the brave medieval knight, with the sophistication of comfortable heroism for the modern-day cavalier. With a collection of fitted tees and polos, button-down shirts and tailored suits, the designs certainly broke the mold of modern menswear with its fresh and edgy details. Check the slideshow for pictures of Ontfront’s stylish knight parade!

Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Replay

imagePicture a bohemian and cosmopolitan traveler who is always on the move, loves comfort but also pays great attention to detail. For the Spring/Summer 2010 season Replay’s collection consists of jersey which is no longer just casual but also comes in an urban version which fits into everyday life, in all its various guises. In terms of denim, the new cuts and prefabricated waistbands give a tailored look to the silhouette, developed with super slim lines or generous flares for women – without forgetting the boyfriend fit of course – and slim/worker/anti-fit styles with treatments and finishes including super-bleach, rinse, destroyed, three-dimensional and coated for men. The T-shirt graphics are also part of the urban context and transmit clear, positive messages of peace and love using a graffiti/writing effect. The colour palette ranges from neutral shades to brights for the menswear, while the women’s wear focuses on shades of mandarin, peach, papaya, passion fruit and watermelon. Studs on bikinis, leather jackets, denim jackets and dresses are being used frequently, to give this collection a rough but playful feel. Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: SuperTrash

imageBorn in Los Angeles from the socialite mind of Ava Riley and brought to Amsterdam in cooperation with Olcay Gulsen, the SuperTrash collection may exude plenty of Hollywood It-Girl glamour at heart, but it has undoubtedly adopted plenty of Dutch flavor. The label showed at this season’s Amsterdam International Fashion Week in a crowded venue with former supermodel Janice Dickinson as a special guest sitting front row. The collection was split into three themes: Animal Jungle, Blossom and Kaleidoscope. The first was inspired by all imperfections of nature, such as animal prints and flowing lines, while the second theme conjured up spring-like elements- elegant, glamorous, and a little naive. Kaleidoscope was all about colors with bright tunics and caftans. Overall it was very commercial, very feminine, and a very playful display of fashion that SuperTrash pulled off well. Take a look at the slideshow for a glimpse of the collection!

Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Lichting 2009

imageThe Spring/Summer 2010 Lichting runway presented the best of each of the seven Dutch fashion academies including the likes of Nathanya Zwart, Erna Einarsdottir, Kai Salomon, and Bregje Cox, among many talented others. As a result, the display turned out to be one of the most spectacular and raved-about catwalk shows of this season’s Amsterdam Fashion Week. The unique platform was founded to bridge the gap between Dutch fashion academies’ most promising students and the professional fashion industry, and the students’ work showed innovation far beyond their years. All of the collections captured of-the-moment elements found in fashion across the globe. The most impressive works were the ones that were least commercially wearable, including Ratna Ho’s collection which was inspired by tribal tattoos, resulting in curvy patterns, pleated skirts and tops made of see-through materials. Bregje Cox was inspired by big city skyscrapers featuring cut-out dresses and patterns meant to imitate the look of an aerial road map. Manon Boertien used her positive memories of religion and spirituality and sunlight-reflecting crystals as inspiration, boasting bold shapes and prints. Take a look at the slideshow for some of the show’s unforgettable highlights!

Amsterdam International Fashion Week Spring/ Summer 2010: Individuals By AMFI

imageStudents of Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI) showed their seventh collection for the school’s label “Individuals.” The young designers presented a collection called “LaLaLa,” a title that perfectly described a series of fascinating pieces. Besides the prints with LaLaLa, it was a collection with a true LaLaLa attitude. Strong and soft looking outfits were mixed and included sharp looking artisan white jackets with big shoulders. Some were knee-length, looking beautifully powerful. The Margiela-esque corsets made of leather ice skates in skin tones were attached to soft shirts, or mixed with skirts creating a confident look without being too severe. The golden leggings looked like armor. All pieces were in soft colors- eggshell, nude, off-white- which gave the strong outfits an air of lightness. Sheer tops and pleated blouses covered more rigid pieces, making the outfits look less serious and more femininely whimsical. Evening dresses looked elegant, done in flowing materials. This collection proved that hard-edge fashion can be comfortable and fragile at the same time.
