Project H Party in LA: Abject Object Debut!

Invitation_BlogGraphic_c.jpg

If you live in Los Angeles and have a penchant for ping pong, free beer, and design for humanity, come on out to design nonprofit Project H’s debut of their LA chapter’s Abject Object initiative next Thursday, April 9th. The event will officially debut the line of four garments and accessories designed by Project H product designers and residents of the Downtown Women’s Center homeless shelter. The products (including a purse that turns into a hammock), are made from reclaimed textiles, and were developed to be produced by homeless individuals, teaching valuable skills through a profitable enterprise. Join Project H at the GOOD Magazine headquarters from 7-10 pm to see the products, meet the chapter, donate to the project, and of course for the ping pong, free beer, and Project H raffle.

Unclutterer on tv with spring decluttering tips

Yesterday morning, I appeared live on WUSA 9, the CBS affiliate in Washington, D.C.

For three minutes, I talked semi-coherently with news anchor Andrea Roane about clearing clutter from your kitchen pantry. Check it out:

Los Angeles Art Weekend Is Back

los angeles postcard.jpgDo you, like us, live somewhere other than Southern California? Then now’s the time to take advantage of all those spooky-cheap cross-country airfares, because Los Angeles Art Weekend is back. After a wildly successful launch year, L.A. Art Weekend’s 2009 incarnation kicks off Thursday with an impressive line-up of special events, public programs, and exhibitions that allow you to experience the best of L.A. art, architecture, design, and film communities in one action-packed four-day weekend.

Where to begin? On Thursday evening, artist Kehinde Wiley will be speaking at the Getty Center, perhaps providing insight into why the world can’t resist his Old Masters-meets-hoodie sweatshirts approach. Alternatively, as if you needed another reason to visit the local Taschen emporium, fashion designer and documentary subject Valentino will be on hand to sign copies of his new book Valentino: A Grand Italian Epic (should you need to make small talk, focus on pugs rather than our friend Alessandra Facchinetti, recently deposed designer at the house of V). The fun continues well into the night with an L.A. Art Weekend kickoff bash at the Hollywood Standard (watch out for chlorine clouds!) featuring a Mike Mills book signing and a post-Punk soundtrack by DJ Michael Stock of Part Time Punks fame. And that’s just Thursday. Click here for the full schedule. And remember, whoever consumes the most culture wins.

New Career Opportunities Daily: The best jobs in media

wow.

My hands are shaking and my heart is fluttering.

The idea of publishing a magazine has been floating in my mind for many years, but I didn’t make the decision to proceed with it until this past Christmas. Deidre and I began working on it in earnest in January. I still can’t quite believe that we accomplished so much in just three months. UPPERCASE magazine is really the culmination of a dozen years of freelance graphic design experience and four years of this creative entrepreneurial adventure called UPPERCASE. All the skills I have acquired over the years have been put to use… and then some! It has been an amazing learning experience and so creatively satisfying.

Blanca Gomez provided the perfect cover image. Blanca, I am so grateful for your generosity. Thank you.

Deidre, thank you for your inexhaustable flow of ideas. And for truly putting your heart into it.

Thank you, Glen, for writing some terrific articles and for listening to me talk about the minutiae of the magazine’s progression.

The shipment of magazines is on its way from Winnipeg and we expect them tomorrow. Everything’s on schedule for the launch celebration this Thursday from 5pm – 9pm. In the meantime, I’m transforming the gallery space for the treehouse show, adding new subscribers (thank you!), filling our biggest Eclectonote order ever, and sending out Jen11 orders. I’m going to leave this post up for a while, to bask in the moment… and I’ve got a lot more work to do!

See you on Thursday!

Milan Design Week 09 Preview: More Tuttobene: Slow White series by Bo Reudler Studio

slowhite.jpg

Bo Rudler Studio will launch their Slow White furniture line next month as a part of the Tuttobene exhibition:

We tend to present nature in a controlled way: branches simplified into repetitive patterns, majestic trees trimmed into squared beams, flowers flattened into graphic motifs. Nature’s complexity, randomness and rawness is tamed. We lost our connection with nature and our surroundings. This century will be about renewing this connection.

For this collection, I left my computer behind and ventured into the woods. I gathered fallen wood to transform into furniture. I started building again with my own hands, knowing everything that went into the process, working consciously, smelling the wood, feeling the structure, composing. The branches were carefully selected for their distinguishing imperfections and curves. Following these shapes led me to the designs: the individual branches were numbered and the pieces are composed using the most beautiful combination of branches. These forms give personality to each piece which will always be different due to the randomness of each branch. All products are hand made.

Adventurous spirits…

This amazing list has grown. Thank you to all the fabulous people who have subscribed over the past few days. I just heard from the printer in Winnipeg and the magazine is just finishing up in the bindery and should be on a truck this afternoon. All systems are go — we’re on track for the launch this Thursday!

The dogs were sent into space in 1960, accompanied by a rabbit, dozens of mice, a couple of rats as well as an assortment of plants and fungi. They were the first earthlings to be sent into orbit and return alive. }

Happy Monday

It’s going to be a BUSY week! The stitch show comes down today and preparation for the Treehouse show begins, the Jen11 book is shipping, there’s a huge Eclectonote order to fulfill… not to mention a First Thursday and the release of issue one of UPPERCASE’s magazine! {this image is from my Tumblr Scrapbook, via Glen Mullaly‘s photostream}

Which Young Starlet Showed Off The Most Grown-Up Fashion Sense At Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards?

This past Saturday, while UCLA students begrudgingly returned to campus as spring break came to a close, their back-to-school blues were made just a little more bearable with a slew of orange carpet celebrity sightings right on campus! Nickelodeon’s 2009 Kids’ Choice Awards, which takes place annually at the school’s Pauley Pavilion, brought to Bruin territory the likes of Megan Fox, Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers, and the whole High School Musical crew, among tons of other Young Hollywood appearances worthy of making any paparazzo drool. While the kids called the shots as far as who received a golden Blimp statuette and who got slimed, it was the ladies who took the cake on the carpet, looking much more like refined young women than their kiddie characters who shot them to fame. Instead of the more casual jeans-and-heels combo that stars have been known to rock at the lesser-hyped award shows geared towards kids and teens, today’s younger vixens stepped it up a notch with designer babydolls and platform sandals, showing that they can compete stylewise with even some of fashion’s most mature! Vote below on who you think looked the most fab beyond her years! Photo Credit: PR Photos
