Dezeen’s responsive site is live! -redirect

If you’ve visited Dezeen on a mobile device over the last few weeks you may have noticed some improvements… our mobile-friendly responsive site went live at the end of last month.

Dezeen's new responsive site

The new responsive design detects the device you’re using and serves the optimal user experience for that device. So if you’re using a mobile phone, you’ll see a stylish new interface with simplified navigation. There is just one column of stories, with all other navigation tidied away into drop-down menus.

Dezeen's new responsive site

Dezeen is proud of its logical yet stylish layout and we think we’ve found a way to bring those same qualities to smaller mobile screens. The mobile experience is designed to be as simple, clean and fast-loading as possible. Features such as slideshows and movies automatically reformat to work seamlessly on iPhones, Android devices and other mobile gadgets.

Dezeen's responsive site

We’ve been testing the site extensively since it went live and we think we’ve ironed out all the bugs, but let us know if you spot any more.

We’re still working on ways of sharing stories via social media on mobile, and on offering a way to view the desktop version of the site, in case you’d prefer that experience.

Dezeen's responsive site on iPhone 5

Comment counts will also be added to the homepage soon (and by the way we’ve also overhauled our comment engine, which is now run by the more elegant and customisable Disqus solution, rather than Intense Debate).

Suggestions for further improvements are most welcome!

Dezeen's responsive site on iPad

Desktop, laptop and tablet users will still see the full, three-column version of Dezeen. Our analytics show that readers feel very comfortable visiting the full version Dezeen on devices such as iPads – the number of users visiting Dezeen on tablets more than doubled over the past year compared to the previous year. Mobile users grew 70% over the year and have grown a further 20% since we introduced the new responsive site.

The site has been designed by our office mates Zerofee. The next steps will be to roll out responsive versions of our Dezeen Jobs recruitment site and our Dezeen Watch Store ecommerce site. Our World Design Guide maps already feature responsive design.

Dezeen featured in third Apple presentation

Dezeen features in three Apple presentations

News: Dezeen has now been used in product demonstrations at three consecutive presentations by software giant Apple.

Dezeen tab was shown in a scrolling list of Safari tabs as part of the new iOS 7 interface, which was revealed during Apple‘s annual keynote speech at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco yesterday.

Dezeen features in three Apple presentations

Our homepage was first used by Apple for the iPhone 5 launch in September last year and also made an appearance in the movie demonstrating the new product.

A month later we popped up again in the company’s Macbook Pro launch event material.

Dezeen features in three Apple presentations

Yesterday’s keynote revealed how Jonathan Ive has overhauled the iOS interface since taking over as head of both hardware and software design at Apple last year. The new operating system features flattened logos, leaner typography and a new colour palette, as well as the anticipated shift away from skeuomorphic representations of leather, felt and wood surfaces.

In recent news Apple has trademarked the design and layout of its retail stores and has been rumoured to be working on an “iRing” that will operate the eagerly anticipated Apple television. The company is due to relocate to a new campus designed by Foster + Partners, the cost of which has reportedly spiralled from $3 billion to nearly $5 billion.

Dezeen offices by Post-Office

The ground floor of Dezeen’s north London office The Surgery has been transformed into a walk-in watch shop by local studio Post-Office (+ slideshow).

Dezeen offices by Post-Office

What used to be the reception at the former doctor’s surgery is now an area for Dezeen Watch Store customers to come and look at, try and buy timepieces from the curated selection available at our online store.

Watches are caged behind black metal-mesh doors in back-lit plywood storage units, and peg board has been added to hang tools for packing and distributing products including our Dezeen Book of Ideas.

Dezeen offices by Post-Office

Post-Office founder Philippe Malouin and his team divided the waiting room with a patchwork of reclaimed windows, creating separate meeting and work spaces.

Dezeen offices by Post-Office

“It made immediate sense to create a wall of glass as a barrier,” Malouin told us. “We sourced most of the Victorian windows from eBay, but had to do a lot of research to find windows the right size that could be cut and pasted into the space.”

Dezeen offices by Post-Office

Plants now hang below the skylight in the meeting room and cacti are mounted on the wall.

Dezeen offices by Post-Office

“The main features in the space that caught our interest were the windows in the roof,” said Malouin. “They reminded us of a greenhouse, so we filled the space with live plants.”

A red sofa obtained at a local market sits below the cacti and a mix of old and new Stool 60s by Alvar Aalto for Artek stand among more foliage around a traditional Berber rug.

“We wanted to use vintage items to make the space less formal and more homely,” he said.

Molded plastic Eames chairs from Vitra and bespoke plywood tables furnish the workspace, along with a display of our heads that were scanned and 3D printed for our print-on-demand publication Print Shift.

Mounted on the walls in both spaces are Malouin’s LED lamps that emanate light through shutter-like slats, which he designed as one of last year’s W Hotels Designers of the Future award winners.

Outside, the facade has been given a fresh lick of white paint and a relief of our logo has been added above the letterbox.

When Post-Office originally designed the Dezeen office in 2011 they added a gold curtain, which has been replaced by light grey fabric, and kitted-out the space with Malouin’s Market Table and Hanger Chairs. An exhibition of new work by Malouin is currently on show at an exhibition in Milan.

Dezeen launches Print Shift magazine with Blurb

Today Dezeen launches Print Shift, a print-on-demand magazine about 3D printing produced in collaboration with cutting-edge publisher Blurb (+ slideshow).

The 60-page, advert-free magazine explores the fast changing world of additive manufacturing and examines how it is transforming architecture, design, fashion and other disciplines. It is one of the first ever magazines to be printed on demand and can only be bought online via the Blurb bookstore.

Written by the Dezeen editorial team, Print Shift is the result of extensive research into a technology that is developing at exhilarating speed. We have spoken to architects, designers, scientists and researchers around the world, travelled across Europe and visited some of the leading studios and factories at the cutting edge of a technological revolution.

Dezeen launches Print Shift

The printing of the magazine is equally revolutionary and uses Blurb’s print-on-demand technology, meaning that the magazine is only printed when a customer buys a copy.

Features in the magazine include a report on the race to build the world’s first printed house; an investigation into the impact additive manufacturing is having on the fashion industry; and a look into the future of printed food.

Other subjects being transformed by 3D printing that are covered in Print Shift include archaeology, the medical industry and weaponry. The magazine also features a guide to buying a desktop 3D printer, a roundup of online printing services for designers and an explanation of how the Dezeen team got their heads scanned and printed.

Dezeen launches Print Shift

“We’re incredibly honoured to be partnering with Dezeen on their first foray into print-on-demand,” said Charles Davies, Blurb’s MD for Europe. “Creating a distinctive publication used to mean printing thousands of copies and take weeks to turnaround. Print Shift was printed-on-demand at our state-of-the-art print facility in Eindhoven in the Netherlands in a matter of days.”

He added: “By linking together new developments in both 3D and book and magazine publishing, we hope to showcase the potential of on-demand-printing and inspire people to create their own high-quality books and magazines using Blurb.”

Dezeen editor in chief Marcus Fairs said:  “It struck us that there was a strong synergy between 3D printing, which has become one of the most popular topics on Dezeen, and what Blurb is doing. Both are democratising their respective industries by putting advanced technology in the hands of ordinary people at an affordable price; both are facilitating the production of high-quality, customised products, in low production runs with short lead times.”

Dezeen launches Print Shift

The magazine is available to buy now from the Blurb bookstore at £8.95 plus postage and packing.

For more details about Print Shift and to read additional content, visit www.dezeen.com/printshift.

Below is a press release from Blurb about the project:

Blurb and leading design blog Dezeen partner to create print-on-demand magazine: Print Shift

Limited edition magazine uncovers the fascinating future of 3D printing

London, UK — 16 April, 2013 — Blurb, the global creative publishing platform, has teamed up with one of the world’s most influential architecture, interiors and design blogs, Dezeen, to create Print Shift, a print-on-demand magazine, that showcases how technology is transforming both the publishing industry and the design world. The magazine, launched today, is available to buy now from the Blurb online bookstore priced at £8.95.

Combining Blurb’s print-on-demand technology with Dezeen’s industry insight and expertise, Print Shift is the first magazine to explore the exciting world of 3D printing, examining the revolutionary developments in architecture, fashion, weaponry, food and health, and featuring interviews with the key pioneers driving this strategic shift, including fashion designer Iris van Herpen and Belgium-based Materialise, through to Janne Kyttanen, co-founder of Freedom of Creation.

Until now, those looking to create high-quality magazines and brochures have been limited by minimum order requirements, long lead times and unattainable upfront costs. Blurb’s on-demand creative publishing platform enables creative professionals to make high-quality business publications from as little as one copy, and fast.

Print Shift has been created using Blurb’s plug-in for Adobe® InDesign® and uploaded to Blurb’s online bookshop. It will be printed only when ordered, using the latest digital presses, then collated, packaged and mailed directly to the customer within a week.

Charles Davies, Blurb’s MD for Europe said:

“We’re incredibly honoured to be partnering with Dezeen on their first foray into print-on-demand. Creating a distinctive publication used to mean printing thousands of copies and take weeks to turnaround. Print Shift was printed-on-demand at our state-of-the-art print facility in Eindhoven in the Netherlands in a matter of days. By linking together new developments in both 3D and book and magazine publishing, we hope to showcase the potential of on-demand-printing and inspire people to create their own high-quality books and magazines using Blurb.

“Whether you’re a creative individual who is looking for a way to monetize their content or a business who wants to create a portfolio, an elegant product catalogue or your very own monthly publication – with Blurb cost and time are no longer a barrier to producing something that is worthy of being displayed on a newsstand or bookshelf.”

Marcus Fairs, Dezeen and Print Shift’s Editor-in-Chief said:

“It struck us that there was a strong synergy between 3D printing, which has become one of the most popular topics on dezeen.com, and what Blurb is doing. Both are democratising their respective industries by putting advanced technology in the hands of ordinary people at an affordable price; both are facilitating the production of high-quality, customised products, in low production runs with short lead times.

“We’re proud to be working with a cutting-edge company like Blurb to produce our first printed-on-demand publication.”

Blurb Magazines are affordable, lighter-weight, perfect-bound, 20- to 240- page publications ideal for creative and editorial content, priced from just £6.99.
