Vinge table lamp by Note for Örsjö Belysning

Stockholm 2013: Swedish studio Note has designed a domed table lamp that is dimmed by rotating a wing at its base.

Vinge table lamp by Note for Orsjo Belysning

Created for Swedish brand Örsjö Belysning, the translucent blown glass shade gradually becomes fully illuminated as the small handle is swept 180 degrees around a central axis.

The light comes with either a brass wing and black conical steel stand, or the whole base in white or red.

The Vinge table lamps were shown at Note Design Studio‘s exhibition space during Stockholm Design Week earlier this month.

LN-CC Additions

by Sabine Zetteler It’s Fashion Week in London, and the city is abuzz with gossip, martinis and forward-thinking style. Frankly, we’re exhausted—and to seek a little solace we’ve headed back east to LN-CC, the place where even the most po-faced fashion fiends can take a little time to chill out….

#006 SideSeat by Studio Makkink & Bey for PROOFF

Product news: Dutch designers Studio Makkink & Bey have combined a desk, shelves and swivel chair to create a flexible workspace in a single item of furniture.

006 SideSeat by Studio Makkink and Bey for PROOFF

Designed for Dutch Brand PROOFF, the chair can be spun ninety degrees so the arm can be used as a side table and partition while reading, or a surface for desk-based work.

The seat is raised above the chunky base so it can move independently from the rest of the piece.

A shelving unit propped on two feet sit at one end and extends out past the seat so legs can fit underneath. Surfaces can be mixed and matched with shades of beige and bright blue.

The product was first shown at last year’s Super Brands London event during London Design Festival and has since gone into production.

James Irvine 1958-2013

James Irvine

News: British industrial designer James Irvine, who founded his studio in Milan nearly 30 years ago, has died aged 54.

Irvine studied design at Kingston Polytechnic in London before completing his master’s degree at the Royal College of Art in 1984, after which he moved to Milan to work as a design consultant for Olivetti, the Italian company famous for its typewriters.

Founded in 1988, his studio has created products, furniture and transport for companies including Italian design brands Artemide, Foscarini and Cappellini, art publisher Phaidon and camera-maker Canon, while in 2000 he designed a fleet of Mercedes-Benz buses for the German city of Hannover.

Irvine most recently worked as the creative director of bent wood furniture company Thonet and as design consultant to Japanese brand Muji, roles he combined in a furniture design collaboration with Konstantin Grcic in 2009.

Figures from the industry paid tribute to Irvine on Twitter, with British designer Sebastian Bergne commenting: “Deeply shocked to hear of the death of James Irvine. What a great loss.” David Carlson, editor-in-chief of online magazine David Report, wrote: “The world has lost a great person and a great designer.”

We filmed an interview with Irvine in 2010 as part of the Dezeen Talks at [D3] Design Talents series at imm cologne – watch it below.

iWatch

iKnow, we all waiting in anticipation for something spectacular to come forth and the iWatch rumors are pretty strong. So if we were to indulge in fantasy for a minute, then this is how Esben Oxholm thinks the Apple team would design the phone/watch. Heavily inspired by the look of the iPhone 5 and sporting a minimalistic, sleek look, the watch is crafted with black aluminum on the outside and a thin layer of soft matte rubber on the inside.

It has got the highly recognizable round home button as the only physical button. The rest of the fun happens on the newly developed slightly double curved touch screen. The iWatch can be fitted to your liking, by removing or adding spacers in the lower part of the bendy bracelet.

Designer: Esben Oxholm
