Keds Throwback

As Keds continues to commemorate the decades with their Century Collection, the latest shoe in the series reflects the sober fashions of the ’30s, an era plagued by the Great Depression. The Keds Throwback, a basic sneaker adorned only with their classic blue label at the heel, makes it especially authentic with a canvas stock and sole that’s close to identical to the original.

Another reminder of Keds’ past, children who grew up in the last couple of decades will remember the simple yellow-and-blue cushioned insole that graced the interior throughout much of the brand’s history, beginning in 1933 when they developed the shock-proof arch cushion. With that extra support and washable fabric exterior, Keds was the original sports-inspired sneaker.

The limited edition, web exclusive Keds Throwback comes in cream, black and pink colorways for $40. Stay tuned for future Century Collection kicks, or check out the recent 1910s-inspired Champion Take Flight sneakers to see another vintage reinvention.

Alexander West Shirts

A former banker, Alexander West is no stranger to the button-down shirt. After finding a lack of smartly designed, nicely tailored shirts on the market he took it upon himself to create them. While he’s not doing shirts for women (yet), West took the time to make a custom-fitted shirt for me and the result is nothing short of remarkable both in fit and style.

West provides a few options for fashioning a custom shirt. If there is already a shirt you adore you can send it in for him to recreate, or he will simply take your measurements either online or in person at the NYC showroom. To ensure the same quality for the DIY measuring as an in-person appointment, West supplies a short video on how to accurately measure yourself. Offering a few hundred colors and fabric patterns online, a trip to the showroom reveals a seemingly endless supply of options (over 1200 in all).

Once fully measured, West provides even more choices such as type of collar or cuff, pocket or pocket-less and shape of the bottom edge. A personal favorite, West will also add an embroidered monogram with three choices on placement.

His attention to detail and raw understanding of both fit and cut leads to a precisely tailored shirt that meets a customer’s exact specifications. Depending on fabric choice, shirts range from $105-150 or $175 for a tuxedo shirt. Check his website for a full list of products including ties and cufflinks.

Impure T-Shirts

In just a few short years, the small t-shirt brand Impure has become immensely popular among Italians and collectors alike. The graphic concepts revolve around living and imaginary icons, but the treatment of them speaks to the belief that no cultural phenomenon is pure anymore—an idea clearly underlined by the slogan, “pure clothes for impure people”.

Impure (also to be intended as “I’m pure”) finds motivation in everyday heroes who mirror change and embody the most authentic challenge to contemporary culture.

Indicated by their website (by the Rome-based agency Xister) and shirt design, Impure embraces paradoxes and subtle controversies. As a result, their tees generate surreal and memorable images, such as Obama as the best DJ, Gandhi as a fighter, or Einstein as sex symbol.

The complete collection today includes fleeces, hoodies, button-downs and denim. The label is also certified environmentally friendly through Impatto Zero, meaning that it compensates what it pollutes through the seeding and care of trees in Costa Rica’. Both men and women’s tees sell online starting at €49.
