Competition: one Fauteuil Direction chair by Jean Prouvé to be won

Competition closes 23 October 2013. One winner will be selected at random and notified by email. The winner’s names will be published in a future edition of our Dezeen Mail newsletter and at the top of this page. Dezeen competitions are international and entries are accepted from readers in any country.

Here’s more information from Nest.co.uk:

Part of the recent Prouvé RAW collection from Vitra and G-Star, the Fauteuil Direction chair is a classic item, reinvented for a modern audience.

The Prouvé RAW collection was an exclusive collaboration between Vitra and fashion house G-Star which saw 17 of Prouvé’s designs re-imagined with a fresh colour palette and revised functionality.

Competition: one Fauteuil Direction chair by Jean Prouvé to be won

The Fauteuil Direction balances industrial architectural forms with exceptional comfort, making the best use of Prouvé’s preferred material: sheet steel. Prouvé’s characteristic design principles of championing honest materials and employing a democratic approach to design were closely followed with the re-introduction of the Fauteuil Direction and careful consideration was taken over the colour. Prouvé’s daughter, Catherine Prouvé, helped refine the colour palette of aluminium, charcoal and gunmetal grey – a shade which was a personal favourite of her fathers.

Competition: one Fauteuil Direction chair by Jean Prouvé to be won

Production of the Prouvé RAW collection was strictly limited and manufacture ceased this April. All pieces are now collectable items.

London design guide 2014-2015 edition, edited by Max Fraser

London’s only comprehensive design guide returns with new content and contributors in this totally updated and rewritten third edition.

Dezeen is now stocking London Design Guide 2014-2015

For fans of contemporary and vintage design and those looking to access it, London Design Guide gives a fresh insight into the city’s design retailers, galleries, museums and bookshops. More than 150 new and established hotspots are compiled and reviewed, providing a tantalising viewpoint of the design capital of the world.

Dezeen is now stocking London Design Guide 2014-2015

Each entry is categorised by neighbourhood and accompanied by detailed maps to help navigate the best that the city has to offer. In each of the ten neighbourhood chapters, we’ve honed in on streets that demonstrate a healthy mix of independent shops and services and asked selected business owners to comment on their evolution and attributes, with contributors including Stephen Webster, Ally Capellino, Sam & Sam Clarke and Michael Anastassiades. Furthermore, restaurant, bar and café recommendations are featured for each area, selected as much for their design credentials as for the quality of food and service.

Dezeen is now stocking London Design Guide 2014-2015

Every edition of London Design Guide includes themed essays from a variety of design experts and commentators. In this edition, we’ve examined the state of retail during a period when shops are undoubtedly struggling with a weak economy, tapered footfall, high rents and the great might of internet shopping. We ask retailers and analysts, including Sheridan Coakley (scp), Simon Alderson (twentytwentyone), Lina Kanafani (Mint) and Magnus Englund (Skandium), what’s the future trajectory of bricks-and-mortar shops?

Dezeen is now stocking London Design Guide 2014-2015

The 208-page London Design Guide is a snapshot of the design scene today, a celebration of creativity and a practical tool for Londoners and tourists alike. There’s no better incentive for exploring the wealth of design in the capital.

The Global Design Forum is the agenda-setting thought leadership event for design, organised by the London Design Festival. The event is a unique platform for the most challenging thinking about the future of human society and design’s role in it.

Speaking at this year’s Forum are individuals from a variety of business backgrounds where the implementation of intelligent design thinking is absolutely core to their strategy and competitive advantage, and that of their clients.

The Global Design Forum will start with a bang at the V&A as British artist, designer, art director and cultural game changer Peter Saville will engage in a provocative head-to-head conversation with leading journalist and commentator Paul Morley. With these two in the hot seat, you should expect the unexpected! The talk will be followed by a drinks reception for all delegates in the museum’s Paintings Gallery.

The next day, on Tuesday 17 September, delegates will come together at the Southbank Centre for the full-day programme, which includes four main sessions and over 20 international speakers.

Sessions will explore where innovation is at its most exciting, most relevant and farthest reaching; five bright entrepreneurs and inventors present their ‘world shaking’ ideas in only five minutes, scrutinised by a panel of experts and voted on by the audience; as cities grow in size, experts from around the world ask how creativity will be central to a ‘smart’ city’s future success; and as communication, production and distribution evolve, what new challenges does that present to designers and brands?

Speakers on the day include advertising guru Sir John Hegarty, serial entrepreneur Brent Hoberman, designer and educator Ilse Crawford, HTC’s Head of Design Scott Croyle, Senior Vice President of BMW Group Design Adrian van Hooydonk, and designers Ross Lovegrove, Jaime Hayon and Michael Young, to name a few.

Attend the Global Design Forum for provocative thinking, game-changing ideas and fresh insights.

Here’s some more details from Formica:

Formica Eames Wire Base Low Table

In the late 1940s, Charles Eames noted all the “fantastic things being made of wire.” That fascination led Charles and Ray Eames to develop a mass-production technique for simultaneously welding wire rods. One result was the Wire-Base Table, which was introduced in 1951. The Eames Wire Base Low Table (1950/2012) is remarkable for the elegance it achieves using simple, practical materials. The table is just 10″ high and it provides a handy surface for a stack of books or a place to rest a drink.

Formica Group is proud to present a limited edition of the Eames tables topped with Formica Laminate Anniversary Collection. The collection features 12 new patterns that reflect the Formica brand and its history giving a fresh look to its iconic design. The Anniversary Laminate tables are limited edition and only 227 have been made worldwide. The tables are designed and produced by Herman Miller.

The Formica Forever book

Formica Group, the inventor of laminate, celebrates 100 years of global design with Formica Forever, a commemorative book that captures the company’s 100-year evolution through cultural shifts, economic uncertainties, trend exploration and global growth. Formica Forever presents the story of how luck and ingenuity, colour and pattern, and design and manufacturing contributed to make Formica brand laminate a truly global brand.

The book includes a series of essays with the focus on different aspects of the story; Phil Patton writes about Formica Group’s Global Business Expansion, Alexander Langer talks about Formica Group’s design legacy and Peter York looks at the cultural impact Formica Group has had during its 100 years. Designed by Abbott Miller, a partner in the renowned international design consultancy Pentagram, the book contains more than 400 images and is modelled after a Formica brand laminate swatch book from the 1960s.
