Colour Nativity by Sebastian Bergne

London designer Sebastian Bergne has created a nativity scene comprising nothing but rectangular wooden blocks.

Designed for the minimalistic modern home, the eight-piece set contains different sized blocks that are each painted a different colour to represent Mary, Joseph, the baby Jesus, three kings, a shepherd and the Star of Bethlehem.

“The project makes use of our learned experience from exposure to thousands of images, toys and Christmas cards over the years,” explains Sebastian Bergne.

A wooden box provides the stable and once Christmas is over the blocks can be slotted together into this box and stowed away until the following year.

Other products by Sebastian Bergne include a ruler for shooting elastic bands and a rubber Christmas stamp, plus last year the designer constructed a Lego greenhouse in London’s Covent Garden.

Dezeen’s last-minute Christmas gift guide

Tableware by Ian Mcintyre for Another Country

Dezeen promotion: Tequila Don Julio asked the Dezeen team to put together a last-minute Christmas gift guide. Here’s a selection of designerly items that have impressed us over the past year and will be buying for our friends and families.

Baby Plumen by Hulger

1. Baby Plumen by Hulger

The fantastically popular, award-winning Plumen low-energy bulb has a little sister! Designed by Sam Wilkinson, the new smaller bulb comes with both bayonet and screw fixtures and can be used in any compatible lamp or shade, or hung naked. See our video interview with Wilkinson.

We all have at least one of these in our homes and Marcus’s mum has requested one for Christmas this year. Plumen now also do a range of stylish pendants to hang the bulbs in.

Sugru

2. Sugru

We’ve all become avid Sugru users over the past year: Wai used it to fix the strap on his weekend bag, Dan hacked his dodgy computer mouse cable and Marcus repaired his bathroom cord-pull light switch.

Sugru is a synthetic, self-hardening putty that can be moulded onto any object to customise or fix it. See some examples of how it can be used here. Watch our video of Sugru inventor Jane ní Dhulchaointigh explaining how she invented the product here.

Terracotta jug by Ian Mcintyre for Another Country

3. Pottery by Ian Mcintyre for Another Country

Most of the Dezeen team already have one of these terracotta jugs – and those that don’t are asking Santa for one. Ian Mcintyre‘s pottery range for Another Country also includes a pinch pot, plate bowl and cup (top image).

The jugs were particularly popular in our Dezeen Super Store pop up this summer and they’re made close to the Dezeen office by Mcintyre, who’s based in Hackney, London.

MY03 Hacker watch by Michael Young

4. MY03 Hacker watch by Michael Young

We could hardly write a Christmas gift guide without including a watch. The MY03 Hacker, designed by Michael Young, is Marcus’ watch of choice at the moment (he has the gold one) and he can vouch for its reliability, durability and conversation-startability.

Watch our exclusive video of Young talking about the Hacker watch here.

NIke+ FuelBand

5. Nike+ FuelBand

Wear this device on your wrist and you’ll get fitter. By recording your daily movements, the Nike+ FuelBand makes you aware of your (lack of) activity and can genuinely help you lead a more active lifestyle. Marcus and Rupinder both swear by them and Rupinder enjoys showing Marcus how much more ground she covers in an average day.

Watch our movie of Nike’s global creative director Andy Walker explaining how the FuelBand works.

Christmas lights in Madrid by Teresa Sapey

Christmas shoppers in Madrid can stroll under glittering circles of LEDs designed by Italian architect Teresa Sapey (+ slideshow).

Madrid Christmas Lights by Teresa Sapey

The Christmas lights were designed by Teresa Sapey for Calle Serrano, an upmarket shopping street in the Spanish capital.

Madrid Christmas Lights by Teresa Sapey

Every year, Madrid’s city council asks a designer or architect to create festive street lighting.

Sapey used energy efficient LEDs to form unique combinations of pattern and colour in each circle.

She founded her architecture studio in Madrid in 1990.

We previously featured Christmas lights in the shape of stars and dominoes that were installed across Lisbon last year.

We’ve also reported on another outdoor lighting project in Madrid – an outbreak of illuminated silicone nipples stuck onto statues by guerrilla lighting designers Luzinterruptus.

Here’s some more information from the designer:

Every single year, Madrid council asks some of the most important designers, architects or courtiers to make designs for Madrid’s streets. Teresa Sapey was asked to conceive Serrano Street’s Christmas lighting. Placed in one of the most luxurious neighbourhoods in Madrid, Serrano Street is well known for the high fashion designer’s shops.

Madrid Christmas Lights by Teresa Sapey

It seemed to be a very difficult task, but Teresa thought this was a good chance to lighten up the street using very colourful and geometric designs. Her aim was to turn the grey and cold Serrano into a warm place, filled with colour.

Madrid Christmas Lights by Teresa Sapey

Her designs have a countless amount of colours combined with circle shapes. Each one is different from the others, forming a sequence of drawings that can be seen from both sides.

Madrid Christmas Lights by Teresa Sapey

This design concerns as well environmental conservation and ecology. Made by using LED technology, it is also sustainable and efficient, requiring less power and producing low energy consumption.
