Fallen stars, glowing red dominoes and a vine-covered tree are some of the lights installed by artists, designers and architects in Lisbon this Christmas (photographs by Fernando Guerra).

Comissioned by the Lisbon City Hall and the Museum of Design and Fashion, seven installations were created in locations around the city centre.

Architect José Adrião wrapped a tree in London Square with red fairy lights so that it would glow as brightly as a decorated Christmas tree.

Over on Augusta Street, architects ADOC placed illuminated blocks shaped like Christmas tree branches that passers by can weave between.

Here’s some more information from the photographer:

Most years, Lisbon celebrates Christmas with much fanfare. Its artificial Christmas tree, once set up annually, towered over 200 feet and was one of the tallest not only in Portugal but in all of Europe.

This year, however, austerity measures have forced the city to take a modest approach, so it invited artists to get creative and spread holiday cheer on a budget.

The Lisbon City Hall decided to spend less in the city Christmas lights this year but make the same this a unique moment.

Together with MUDE – Museum of Design and Fashion -invited 25 artists, architects and designers to create light sculptures to mark Christmas in Lisbon, and from those 7 installations were selected.

Office Swap Gifts and Stocking Stuffers

Ten tiny gifts from our 2011 Holiday Gift Guide

‘Tis the season of office swaps and knickknack-giving. Acting as an appetizer for the main feast, mini-gifts for a get-together or to stuff the old stocking can often be the most clever treasures of the lot. We’ve reveled in gathering charming, small and often affordable items to give by the bunch for our 2011 Holiday Gift Guide, with a selection of 10 below.

SS-GG-zippo-and-opener.jpg

Zippo Handwarmer

The iconic handwarmer provides enough warmth on one fill to keep your digits toasty for up to 12 hours of fishing, hunting, skiing or even just strolling town around during the cold months. Measuring only four inches in length, the warmer fits nicely into your palm while still producing more than ten times the heat as a traditional shake-pack.

Hex Bottle Opener

Seattle’s Iacoli & McAllister perfectly execute industrial design on a small scale with this minimalist tool. Hand-cut from a solid brass hex rod, this bottle opener is one you won’t want to hide away in a drawer when not in use.

SS-GG-snake-stapler.jpg SS-GG-brass-pencil.jpg
Snake Bite Staple Remover

Transforming the mundane office tool into a nicely designed little sculpture, the snake seems to personify what we’ve always imagined a staple remover’s evil alter ego would be. Plus, the weighty pewter accessory dresses up a desktop rather than being relegated to a drawer.

Midori Brass Pencil

Made in Japan with purposeful, sensible design, the brass pencil holder houses a miniature writing utensil and eraser. Though it seems like a complete novelty, it’s quite practical with an old-fashioned feel.

Air Quote Mittens

These ultra-soft merino wool mittens from Kate Spade allow you to communicate skepticism without freezing your fingers. One size fits all hands and quick-wit personalities.

Schluesselwurst im Glas

Roughly translated as sausage keychain in a jar, this cheeky accessory is the ultimate gag-gift or accoutrement for your forgetful friend. The wiener itself is made of lycra for a life-like look and feel.

SS-GG-click-tool.jpg SS-GG-bookman-light.jpg
Click Multi Tool

Seven tools, including five hex keys and two screw drivers, make this portable bike tool a must have for any cyclist. At less than two inches in length, this unbelievably tiny gadget can even be clipped to a key chain. Lightweight, compact and efficient, it’s everything one needs in a bike tool.

Bookman Bicycle Light

In the same fashion as the click tool, this smartly designedminiature lightis a must for city cyclists. With one LED per light—white in the front and red in the rear—the slimmed-down design allows the torch to be affixed to the handlebars or seat post easily using only a small elastic cord.

SS-GG-cards.jpg SS-GG-chocolate.jpg
Monarch Playing Cards

This elegantdeck of cards, while affordable, is fit for a king—or a magician, for that matter. Even better, each deck is made in America.

Olive & Sinclair Chocolate Co.

The beautiful packaging on these small-batch bars give proper presentation to the southern artisan chocolates within. The lucky recipient will have a hard time unwrapping the treats, but will surely be glad once they do.

Blood pack of Santa Claus by Kiseung Lee

Blood pack of Santa Claus by Kiseung Lee

Designer Kiseung Lee of Helsinki wants people to fill stockings with more vital gifts this Christmas: donations to the blood bank.

Blood pack of Santa Claus by Kiseung Lee

His conceptual stocking-shaped blood packs were on show as part of Helsinki Design Week in September, although they were filled with red pigment rather than actual blood.

Blood pack of Santa Claus by Kiseung Lee

Lee wants to stimulate donations as a generous gesture that’s easy to make but could mean the difference between life and death to someone else.

Blood pack of Santa Claus by Kiseung Lee

Here are some more details from Kiseung Lee:

“Put your present in the socks, somewhen it will be back to you”

In generally, people tend to show a stiff motivation and response to donation. This phenomenon has caused passive dedication to society and human being lives. Naturally, it has weaken a bond between mankind. I suggest new blood bag design and hope to inspire active blood donating boom or event across the world and dedicate to improve a quality of our lives. By donating warmness with pleasure, people would feel being a “Santa-claus” alike . Also, the socks shape welfare and sharing love – written by Kiseung, Lee

The richest countries in the world suffer from overproduction and goods bulimia. The biggest problem is no longer a lack of possessions, but homes changed to warehouses for them. The question from the beginning of the 1970s, “Necessary or not?”, is more timely than ever. What do we really need? Goods and product design have developed through different eras and isms, but we people, whether we are millionaires or not, always and forever have but one heart. Neither has the number or shape of our hands changed over the millennia. Whether we want to be or not, we are all anatomically ancient in the midst of all these novelty products. The act of being brings inevitable vulnerability and uncertainty. Our only certainty is our daily trade in dreams and lies. The important things are always very simple. The greatest gift is to just at the right moment find a personal unquestioning and intimate closeness in another human. Santa’s stockings has not been filled with useless Chinese plastic junk – written by Kaj Kalin, Exhibition “to declare” curator, Helsinki design week 2011.

Cool Hunting Video Presents: Lou Nasti

Our behind-the-scenes video of Brooklyn’s animatronic master

For our latest video we trucked deep into Brooklyn, NY to explore Mechanical Displays, Lou Nasti’s fantastic studio. Nasti is the animatronic mastermind responsible for installations around the globe, most notably some of the most iconic Christmas displays on 5th Avenue in Manhattan. Obsessed with robotics since childhood, he’s been doing it professionally for over 30 years, applying an uncanny mechanical skill reflected in his “can do” approach to modern technology. We were lucky enough to spend the day in Nasti’s studio learning some of his tricks and getting a sneak peek at some upcoming projects.
