Transfurniture

Anyone who’s lived in a studio apartment understands the frustration of not having room for a table. Besides providing a proper place to eat, many times the table also serves as a center point for entertaining guests. This ingenious convertible furniture piece is perfect for compact spaces, instantly transforming from 3 person sofa to 6 person dining table. Simply unfold the top/back, remove the cushions, & expand their legs to create a comfortable space to eat, play a card game, or enjoy other group activities.

Earth-Inspired Seating

The Mägi (Estonian for “mountain”) bench’s striking construction is composed of just two parts: the upper with simple and pure geometry that constitutes the seat in contrast with the lower base where jagged lines remind of stylized contours of headlands and mountainscapes while serving as both support and storage for books, magazines and other items.

Out of The Woods

RCA students camp out in Terrence Conran’s backyard to produce 12 chairs featured at the V&A.

Out of The Woods

by Monica Khemsurov While wood will always be a well-respected classic in the furniture world, these days it seems like we’re constantly hearing about yet another designer making yet another new chair out of walnut or oak. But the news that 15 of them have spent a week camping in…

Flip-Floppin’ Bench

Part functional public seating solution, part kinetic sculpture, the Bend Bench was designed around a unique frame that makes it possible to rotate both vertically and horizontally. It can spin like a merry-go-round to face any direction for different views. Once in position, one side can be flipped vertically to provide shade or cover from the rain over the other. Simply flip it back down to double the space for others to sit. One of the most versatile bench designs we’ve seen!

Urban Bleachers

A twist on the urban bench, the Mnogoyarus applies the functionality of bleachers into a more compact design that provides added seating without taking up much more space. The raised, tiered wooden plank seats are situated on a sturdy concrete base anchored deep in the ground for stability. The simple design offers a different view and encourages the sharing of space between park-goers.

Oddly Adaptive Seating

The Strucchair approaches modern seating design from a different angle; it aims to fit into irregular, ever-changing environments rather than traditional settings. The unique adaptive structure consists of several kinetic units held together by rubber hinges. Together they form two quadrilateral prisms that move independently to create a balanced and comfortable surface no matter how irregular the terrain might be. Confused much!? Don’t worry… there’s a vid to explain it all! Hit the jump to watch!

Abstract Nautical Bench

The Mola bench by Andrija Večenaj was inspired by his experience growing up in the seaport city of Rijeka, Croatia, where he would spend time watching the saves, docking ships and multitude of personalities pass through. The shape is an abstract representation of waves and boat hulls, exaggerated by planked wood that references the deck of the ships. A hollow concrete base supports the adjustable surfaces and gives the structure a catamaran-like aesthetic that compliments the nautical feel.

Scenic Seating

This coat rack/bench combination, called “A Tree in the Meadow,” consists of 20×20 thick maple slats situated in 18mm thick birch plywood, creating a visually stunning matrix that resembles the striking vision of a lone tree in a hayfield. The design skews our perception of storage and formal structural stability- umbrellas, newspaper, slippers and other small items can be stored among the slats while coats and bags can be placed on the extended slats that form the coat rack.

Perfectly Imperfect Furniture

Gotta love the whimsical, storybook-looking Seasons furniture series. No two pieces are exactly the same in the handmade collection of stools, benches and tables. Although diverse in dimension and function, each is constructed in the same process in which mortise-and-tenon joints are used to connect hazel branches and an oak top. A mixture of sawdust and glue are used to fill and smooth the connections, resulting in an organic, smooth and seamless form.

The pieces are burned and treated with wax. After the top is sanded they are polished and treated with oil. Hazel branches, chosen for their strength and straightness, introduce a natural dynamic into the final structure and give each piece a distinct character that is marked and numbered.
